BARC/W1BOS Field Day 2000

Picture is worth a 1000 words ... documenting extras for FD entry.

Public Location

Lars Andersen Park in Brookline is a public park, a former mansion's grounds deeded to the town. The mansion's site itself is now a parking lot surrounded by patios and lawns. Although the park normally closes at sundown, we annually get permission to camp overnight for Field Day. To the left is the view from one HF antenna's down-lead, near the VHF tent, up towards the parking lot, food prep area, and the R7.

The side-view shows more of the park's architectural beauty. In the foreground is our grill station. The self-supporting tarps are the logistics and public information "tents". The yellow-tape in the far right, in front of the arcade, is the generator corner of the parking lot (sited on the far-side from the exposure to the nearest neighbors).

For completeness, another picture taken from about the same spot near the food-area but looking further left, shows from left to right, a camping tent (yellow, rear), the VHF halos & station tent, a camping tent, the blue-and-white pavilion for 2 HF stations, and the third HF station tent.

Information Booth

We use one of our "easy-ups" and banner to make an attractive information booth, which also has the 2m FM "talk in" station -- not a contest station, but handling the "logistics net" on the club repeater, and SKYWARN coordination. The tall-ships poster is on the "go-kit" containing the talk-in radio and public-safety radios. Our 2m FM Simplex contacts (aside from solar) were on a second rig from this table, which rig was also used to pass SKYWARN traffic to another FD site that was in the watch/warning area.

In the rear are the white easy-up logistics store and the blue-and-white banquet tent that held two HF stations.

100% emergency power

Main black&red generator in rear, smaller green spare in foreground, not showing portable lighting plant (that ran coffee maker too). Tent in background (south loge) is AMSAT contingent.

Satellite

The south lawn is home to the satellite operation, provided by N1HID and KD1NX. Their fully automated data-mode station has fully automated tracking with dual-band circularly polarized yagis on az-el rotator. No voice or cw contacts were attempted by sat this year. PacSat contacts were made on three birds, KO-23 :17 (14+self in zip, including Singapore, Canada, England), KO-25 :14 (13+self, including Singapore again and Canada), UO-22 :15 (13 in zip, US and Singapore only), for a total of 46 reported (42 in zips).

KA1MOM shot this attractive sunset shot of the satellite array.
