Lars Andersen Park in Brookline is a public park
on a hill, a former mansion's grounds deeded to the town. The mansion's
site itself is now a parking lot surrounded
by the patios and lawns. Although the park normally closes at sundown,
we annually get permission to camp overnight
for Field Day. The walls and arcades of the former gardens are quite
pretty, as is the view of the city.
<The
driveway was marked with Field Day this way signs, saying "Radio
Station" with ARRL and BARC logos.
The city view from the
hilltop is digitally enhanced,
as it was totally washed out in the haze. >
Yes, Boston has
grown a new tower, visually between The Pru and Old Woody from this
angle.
This
year we were not competing with any weddings, we've got the site completely
reserved now. >
<The antenna crew led by Bill W1OHM did a great job getting three dipoles (plain, B&W TFD, and G5RV) up, using the few trees available, and (with all hands doing the Iwo Jima) getting the R7 up in an open lawn marked, for pedestrian safety.
<
The all-important food station was again run by Rick N1HID with burger
flipping help from Walter KB1IBG, and Pancake
and Coffee flipping by Bill N1VUX
For pictures of more architectural interest on the park, see the club FD2001 pix page, which also has more operating and antenna pictures.
Bill
KA1MOM, local ARRL PIO, this year used a closed tent to protect the
piles of handouts from the wind, but used
the this-way signs, Ham Radio for Dummies book, and a large ARRL flag
to indicate the PIO tent.
In
the past, we'd kept our generators in the corner of the parking lot or
behind a retaining wall (sited on the far-side
from the exposure to the nearest neighbors). Like last year, our only
generator was the much smaller Honda quiet-run
2kW, so we just sat it under a tree. We could only tell it needed
refueling because the logging computers' UPS
beeped. (Except for the night refueling, when all the lights died too.)
Our thanks to Hingham FD for
the loan of the fine generator.
We again used Paul N1ZKR's excellent A/C distribution panel and drops with GFI protection and breakers.
Other power arrangements: We again used a 12v bus for the HF radios,
with two deep-cycle (marine) batteries on
an Astron supply, which Paul put together for FD2004 at the last minute
for FD2004 (last year). This provided the
equivalent of a large UPS for the 12V radios. The logging computers
(mostly batteryless old laptops running DOS
and WR9R software) were on the UPS.
^The fat black cables are the 12v
bus, and red-with-yellow stripe is the tap with terminal block, splices
into bus at red-taped splice.
Main operating tent with CW, 2xPhone and digital HF stations.
Our scaled down committee did not have time to arrange demos that weren't eligible for QSO credit.
Our
two "demo" were eligible for
QSO points, PSK31 and Satellite, but we don't (yet) have a log of a
Satellite QSO.
Our satellite station provided by Rick N1HID was using a pair of Arrow antennas on tripod and laptop, attempting both packsats and voice sats.
see the club FD2001 pix page for pix of more elaborate Sat stations.
Message was drafted, but was not sent.
Our NE Div Vice Director Mike Raisbeck, K1TWF,
was invited, arrived, and is an elected
member of his town government.
Massachusetts Salvation Army HQ's SATERN Radio Officer Frank N1DHW has
been served by the Club ARES team for their
large deployment drill, was invited, and visited the site.
If the rules change didn't make such a point about "elected", I'd reject this ... but since the rules don't allow counting an Appointed town manager or an Emergency Management Director who isn't yet Served but might like to be -- or who is Served by RACES without a ARES MOU -- I'll take whatever fits.
News releases and invitations issued -- our PIO, Bill KA1MOM (same as the PIO table) did a magnificent job customizing the releases for the different channels.
Weather was favorable this year, and team was inexplicably not exhausted, but all available radios either drew too much current for the solar panel or only had 12v chargers, not 12v operating adapters.
We copied the bulletin
this year ... Eric, K1NUN, club president &
FD Co-chair, audio-taped the CW bulletin, but the tape broke part way
through transcription, so he filled in the
rest on the phone bulletin - that's ham rsesourcefulness. [tif, pdf]
We
had a Youth guest operator attempt a QSO with a control
operator, but the bands did not cooperate. (the Very YL in the
orange hat, Alyssa - N1IST's daughter), not
the beared guy in the other orange hat)
