About Us

Amateur radio is an exciting hobby and public service!  The members of the Norfolk County Radio Association (NCRA) have a wide range of interests in amateur radio: emergency communication support to local communities; reporting weather events via the SKYWARN program to the National Weather Service; providing communications support to local charity events such as road races (including the Boston Marathon); speaking with other amateur radio operators in other countries; experimenting with electronic circuits and antenna design; and many other aspects of the hobby and public service of amateur radio.

For more information about the many facets of Amateur Radio, visit the National Association for Amateur Radio® at: <http://www.arrl.org>.

Meetings

The NCRA meets monthly from September through June. Meetings are rotated among members’ homes so attendance at club meetings is limited to existing club members.

Weekly Net

The NCRA hosts a weekly net on the K1HRV repeater on 146.895 MHz (PL tone 123 Hz) at 8 PM local time each Monday. All hams are invited to participate in the net and to get to know the club members. Many have been hams for several decades and are always willing to offer advice to new hams or to just chat. Please join us on the weekly net.

Past History

Here is an excerpt from the NCRA meeting minutes dating back to 1960 provided by Dave, K1HRV. Thanks to his efforts to compile a history of the NCRA from its many meeting minutes:

December 14, 1960 – The 40th anniversary of the N.C.R.A. was celebrated by a dinner meeting at the Red Fox Steak House in Foxboro.  Eleven members sat down to a delicious roast beef dinner.  Among those present was member Chester Capen, W1AGR, who was one of the charter members of the Norwood Radio Club of which the N.C.R.A. was an off-shoot.  At the following meeting, held on January 11, 1961, Bill Sheehan, W1IXI, continuing with some remarks which he had made at the Red Fox dinner, paid further tribute to Chet.  Bill echoed the sentiments of all the members of the club and paid glowing tribute to Chet’s steadfast loyalty to ham radio and to the N.C.R.A. over the years.  In appreciation of his loyalty, Bill presented Chet with a replica of the original Wouff Hong ,which is on display at the A.R.R.L. headquarters in Newington CT.  Finally, the club voted unanimously to present to Chet a life membership in the N.C.R.A. with dues fully paid up.  In a short response, obviously filled with deep emotion, Chet thanked the members for the honors bestowed upon him.

Here is a picture of the replica of the Wouff Hong as well as a very nice call sign plaque as photographed by the granddaughter of Chet, W1AGR, and sent to the NCRA in 2010:
