The August 3, 2019 Eastern MA Hospital Net is approaching. We do not have anyone signed up to conduct the August net.

If anyone is interested in taking a turn as Net Control Station please let us know. 

Below are the repeaters we have available for our use. Let us know which 3 or 4 repeaters you would like to use and we will make all the notifications. We will also send you a copy of our net preamble if you like which you may modify for your own use.

Request For Operators: YuKanRun Triple Threat Half Marathon and 5K, August 4, 2019

We are looking for operators to staff the YuKanRun Triple Threat Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday, August 4, 2019. Please be on location by 8:00; starts at Rockport High School, 24 Jerdens Lane, Rockport, MA 01966.

Please let me know if you can staff a communications check-point for the event by August 4th so I can plan staffing positions for the event.

While CAARA’s repeater performance has greatly improved with the replacement of our new antennas, the northern regions of this course may still experience some difficulty with communications especially with low-powered HTs, so we’ll be looking for higher powered equipment to staff those areas.

Please let us know what type of equipment you plan to use (ie: mobile; HT; ¼-wave mag mount; OEM rubber duck, etc.) so we have a better idea of where to locate you along the event course per the potential of your equipment.

The course will be open and supported by CAARA for four hours. Runner safety is everyone’s top priority. 

Local EMT crews and ambulances will be available for three hours to help.

If you would like to work the 5K only please let me know and I will make you a check point.

Volunteers Sought, North Attleborough Fire Fighters Kids Day, July 25-28, 2019

This a call for assistance from all EMA, CERT. HAM and MRC groups to help at the North Attleborough Fire Fighters Kids Day.

Those Agencies that are supplying equipment (Light Towers, Message Boards etc) have been contacted separately for Mutual Aid.

Our event is coming up quickly and I am still in need of staff for every day both day and evening for our event.  If you could please get back to me with your agencies staff availability, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

WHAT: N.A. Firefighters Kids Day- A four day long Family Event with a Carnival Games, Music, Vendors,  Classic Cars Cruise Night Food Court Bands and ending with Fireworks at Dark on both Friday AND Saturday There will also be a Road Race on Sunday Morning that will need coverage

WHEN: Thursday July 25th Through Sunday July 28th  Noon to 11:00PM  Sunday Carnival ends at 6:00PM. The Sunday Road Race will be at  7AM Until approximately 10AM.

WHERE: N.A. Middle School Campus 564 Landry Ave  North Attleborough

WHO; Everybody. Volunteers can bring their families and friends.  Duty uniform weather dependent but HiViz Jacket/Raincoat/ or Vest Dark pants or shorts, Baseball cap, Traffic Wand/Flashlight,  Sunscreen and bug spray. Radios will be provided as needed.

THE MISSION: Our Mission is to manage the Parking Lots and roadways on site and at one overflow off site Parking lot on Landry Ave. There will be two shifts. A Day Shift and a Night Shift which will change between 5:00PM and 6:00PM 

The Day Shift will start at 11AM and end at 5:30PM. The Night Shift will start at 5:00PM and end at 11:00PM or earlier if traffic warrants it. There will be meal tickets provided by the Committee for a meal half way through your shift and breaks (Hydration) will be provided as needed.

Our Mission is to manage the on campus Parking Lots, Accessible Parking and assist the Police with Pedestrian safety both before, during and after the Event and Fireworks. After the Fireworks we will assist the Police Detail in safely getting cars from the Parking Lots to the Street and make sure that Pedestrians and Cars don’t mix. We will also be responsible for starting and maintaining the several light towers and Message Boards scattered throughout the Campus.

We recognize that this is a long duration event but would appreciate what ever time you can give us. It is suggested that if a specific Team could do a Day or Shift or two that would work best. If you have mobility issues we can put you where you are not on your feet (Volunteer Registration Booth, Command Post  etc) or bring a lawn chair.

Eastern MA Hospital Net – July 6, 2019

Hi Everyone,

Net Control for the July 6, 2019 Eastern MA Hospital Net will be W1SSH, The South Shore Health Amateur Radio Group. The net will commence at the usual time of 10:00 AM using the following repeaters in the order listed.

1. Plymouth 146.685 tone 131.8
2. W. Bridgewater 146.775 dcs 244
3. Sharon 146.865 tone 103.5
4. Simplex 147.42 MHz

The Net will then return to the Plymouth Repeater for final comments and Net closing.

NET Protocol: Please wait for Net Control to ask for Check-ins. When asked to check in please use the standard net check-in procedure which is: Here is.., un-key, wait 3 seconds to check for doubling, then give your or your facilities call sign, your first name, and your facility’s name.

We extend an invitation to any health care facility or EOC of any city or town that is served by one of the participating hospitals to join the Net. We also extend an invitation to any RACES or ARES member to check in during the NET.

We are always looking for groups or organizations to try their hand at Net Control duties. If you are interested in joining the group please let us know. We can be reached by sending an email to ssharg@outlook.com. The goal is to rotate Net Control practice and the experience among as many individuals and groups as possible.

We thank the repeater trustees for their generosity in allowing us to conduct the monthly nets and the use of their systems in an actual event. The following list of repeaters is available for our use. Only a few systems are used each month with the selection of those used made by Net Control for that month. More systems are being added to the list on a regular basis.

Falmouth ARA Emergency Communications Trailer Project

Falmouth Amateur Radio AssociationThe Falmouth Amateur Radio Association has embarked upon an ambitious project to raise $14,000 by September 1, 2019 for the purchase a 16-foot utility trailer and to “assemble a professional, self-contained, mobile communications platform that would be utilized for emergency and non-emergency, public safety and public service events.”

FARA intends to outfit the trailer with a number of operator positions that would “allow operation on a multitude of communications networks and frequencies … including local amateur radio repeaters that link local and regional communications for storm shelters, hospitals and aid stations.” The trailer would also be utilized for non-emergency events like road races, marathons, July 4th celebrations, fairs, and community service events.

The Falmouth ARA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to “providing emergency and routine radio communications support to the citizens of the Town of Falmouth and the surrounding communities.”

Hams Support Charity Road Race

Jeff Ayres WKID organized a group of hams to provide support for the Weymouth Food Pantry’s 5K Fresh Bite 5K Road Race. The race was held at Wompatuck State Park on Saturday June 15th. Joining Jeff was Anne Manna WB1ARU, Marcia Forde KW1U, Bob Mahoney KB1FBA, Jim O’Rourke WG1L, Larry Kenney W1VP, Rich Carnes, WA1RIW, Bob Azanow KA1KIJ, Rick Emord KB1TEE, Mike Davis WA1MAD and Greg Bennett KC1CIC who took the photo. WKID was NCS for the event. The hams got many thanks from the runners during the race and especially from the race organizers. Everyone had a great time supporting a great cause.

Volunteers Needed, Weymouth Food Pantry Fresh Bite 5K Hunger Run, Wompatuck State Park, June 15, 2019

The Weymouth Food Pantry is holding its annual Fresh Bite 5K race on June 15. The amateur radio club that normally provides communications for this event is not able to do so this year, so I am requesting assistance in putting together a group to accomplish this. The race is held in Wompatuck State Park. There are two courses, one that is 1 mile, the other is 5K or approximately 3 miles. As there is no vehicle access to the course, it may require a walk as far as a mile and a half to get to your assigned location.

I am looking for six to eight people, the more the better! Experience is helpful but not necessary. A fully charged handheld radio is needed and I recommend an aftermarket antenna if you have one, as we will be spread around the park, and this does present some communications challenges. The main communications will be on the Norwell Repeater, 145.250 – Shift PL 77.0 with Simplex on 147.420, as backup.

Hams with bicycles will be very welcome for this event, as it extremely useful to be able to conduct a sweep of the course at the end of the race, as well as being able to go to a location quickly.

As far as I know, there will not be an ambulance on location, as we have had in the past. If someone who has experience as Net Control for this type of event, and would be willing to be Net Control, please advise. 

We will meet at the visitors center at 8:15 AM, as the first race starts at 9:30. We will have a brief pre-race meeting. You will have to be at your assigned location by 9:15 AM for roll call.

I would suggest bringing insect repellent and water, and comfortable walking shoes.

Volunteers Requested, Alzheimer’s Association Ride, June 22

For the past few years now the Alzheimer’s Association RIDE has been scheduled smack on the same day as Field Day, June 22.  Volunteer participation has been diminished, but acceptable.  This year, we’re in deep doo doo 🙂

I’m sending this appeal to PART.. for those who are NOT planning to attend Field Day and would enjoy working a worthy event. 

Volunteers are needed to provide communications support for this event.  There are three event courses, the longest being 62 Miles.  We use VHF Amateur Radio repeaters.  Operators will accompany experienced Alzheimer’s staff who provide SAG (Support and Gear) assistance to participants.  Coordination is managed at the Rye, NH event operations center. 

This is truly a lovely event.  Not only is the main site gorgeous, but the course route travels through some of the most picturesque areas of Rockingham County, NH and Essex County, MA.

We provide full documentation which will familiarize comms volunteers with the event and procedures.  This will be a great opportunity to travel :), and to work within a well-organized team in benefit of a very worthy organization.  New volunteers need not fret.  This will be an excellent introduction to practical Amateur Radio communications.

The Alzheimer’s Association really takes great care of their volunteers.  All you need is a mobile radio with mag mount.  (We can supply a few for volunteers who only own portables).

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for Monday June 3 at 8:30pm

Hello to all…

The June ARES Net is Monday June 3, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.
The July ARES net will be Monday July 1, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.

We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. As part of our relationship with MARS and our own situational awareness gathering we will be asking for any known infrastructure issues that you are aware of. The information must either be personally observed, or obtained “over the air” via amateur radio. Items considered to be infrastructure include but are not limited to: electrical power, water, medical facilities, sanitation, communications, and transportation. Examples of failure would be: small or large area power failure, water main breaks, hospitals’ ER closed, sewage issues, TV/radio station off the air (including public safety), interstate highway or major road closed. No known issues are just as important as reporting failures.

Additionally we are interested in relay of any weather information from airport ATIS/ASOS stations that you can directly receive via radio. These stations broadcast continuously in the 120.000 – 138.000 MHz frequency range using amplitude modulation. Information from the ATIS should include airport, temperature, altimeter (barometer), wind, precipitation, and visibility.A list of stations with their frequencies and a map can be found at: <https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/weather/asos/?state=MA>. A brief introduction to ATIS can be found at: <https://www.vatsim.net/pilot-resource-centre/general-lessons/understanding-atis>. We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation.

Emergency Messaging Demonstration for Red Cross, FEMA is a Success

With Red Cross and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials monitoring, dozens of radio amateurs along the US east coast on May 23 demonstrated Amateur Radio’s ability to deliver messages without commercial power, infrastructure, or permanently established stations. The event took place in coordination with ARRL. The demonstration was a mock response to a simulated disaster scenario — a major hurricane with mass casualties. During the event, radio amateurs at portable stations from New England to the Carolinas delivered message traffic to W1AW, which coordinated and delivered the information to officials attending a joint Red Cross-FEMA meeting in Baltimore.  [Full story]

We extend an invitation to any health care facility or the EOC of any city or town that is served by one of the participating hospitals to join the Net. We also extend an invitation to any RACES or ARES member to check in during the NET.

We are always looking for groups or organizations to try their hand at Net Control duties. If you are interested in joining the group please let us know. We can be reached by sending an email to: ssharg@gmail.com. Our goal is to rotate Net Control practice and the experience among as many groups as possible. 

We thank the repeater trustees for their generosity in allowing us to conduct the monthly nets and the use of their systems in an actual event. The following list of repeaters are available for our use. Only a few systems are used each month with the selection of those used made by Net Control for that month.  More systems are being added to the list on a regular basis.

Local Amateurs Participate in Joint American Red Cross, FEMA Exercise

Amateurs in Eastern Massachusetts along with dozens of hams along the US East Coast demonstrated Amateur Radio’s ability to deliver messages without commercial power, infrastructure, or permanently established stations for officials of the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Operators Requested, YuKanRun Twin Lobster Half-Marathon, Gloucester, June 2, 2019

We are looking for operators to staff the YuKanRun Twin Lobster Half Marathon at Gloucester High School on Sunday, June 2, 2019. The event begins at 9:00 AM; be on location by 8:30  AM.

Please let me know if you can staff a communications check-point for the event by Thursday, May 30th so I can plan staffing positions for the event.

Please let us know what type of equipment you plan to use (i.e.: mobile; HT; ¼-wave mag mount; OEM rubber duck; etc.) so we have a better idea of where to locate you along the event course per the potential of your equipment.

The course will be open and supported for four hours. Runner safety is everyone’s top priority. Local EMT crews and ambulances will be available for three hours to help ensure everyone enjoys the day and remains safe.

I will not be able to make this event. I will be doing the emailing and setup but will not be able to make it on race day. We will need a net control for the Twin Lobster. I am doing another event that weekend.

Call for Volunteers, Norton Founders Day, June 15, 2019

This is the Official call for EMA, HAM, CERT and MRC Volunteers to help at Norton Founders Day

Those Agencies that are supplying equipment have been contacted separately for Mutual Aid 

WHAT: Norton Founders Day- An Evening long Family Town Picnic with Games, Music, Vendors,  Classic Cars Cruise Night
           Food Court Bands and ending with Fireworks at Dark

WHEN: Saturday June 15th from 5:00PM to 9:00PM

WHERE: H.A. Yelle School Campus, 64 East Main St., Norton, across from Honey Dew Donuts.

WHO: Everybody. Volunteers can bring their families and friends

THE MISSION: Starting at about 1:00PM the Committee will start setting up the Food Court, Vendor Booths, Games and Command Post
While we will need a handful of Volunteers with this portion of the setup, the bulk of the Volunteers are being asked to report at 4:00PM.

The Shift will be 4:00PM to 9:30/10:00PM depending on how long it takes to get the cars out of the lots.

There will be a supper (Pizza and soda/water) served at about 7:30PM and breaks (Hydration) will be provided as needed.

NEMA is responsible for providing Light and Power to the Food Court and Various Venues on Campus

Our Mission is to manage the on campus Parking Lots and assist the Police with Pedestrian safety both before, during and after the Fireworks. During the Fireworks we will assist the Fire Dept with Cold Zone Perimeter Security and Hot fireworks patrol as needed.

After the Fireworks we will assist the Police Detail in safely getting cars from the Parking Lots to the Street and make sure that 
Pedestrians and Cars don’t mix.

We recognize that this is a long event but would appreciate what ever time you can give us. If you have mobility issues we can put you where you are not on your feet (EMA/CERT Info Booth etc) or bring a lawn chair.
