Eastern Massachusetts ARES Exercise – Operation Unify Coincident with National Red Cross Exercise – Saturday May 8th, 2021 – 10 AM-12 PM

The Eastern MA Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) will conduct an exercise in conjunction with the National Red Cross exercise. Operation “Unify” on May 8th, 2021 from 10 AM to 12 Noon (setup to start at 830-9 AM where needed) to test its capability in establishing communications with stations inside and outside of the section. Operation “Unity” will attempt to build upon the lessons learned from past operational exercises.

The exercise scenario involves a power grid failure caused by an X range solar flare. Eventually, hundreds of thousands of people in Eastern Massachusetts are left without power due to this solar flare.

“This exercise guideline is deliberately broad and generic in nature similar to our previous exercises. ARES groups are free to adapt this scenario and conduct their exercise as needed for their group,” writes District Emergency Coordinator Frank O’Laughlin, WQ1O.

“This is another great opportunity, similar to the Fall and Winter exercises, for new Amateur Radio Operators, whether they are involved in ARES or not, to check into nets, provide simulated information and exercise traffic, or just check in and learn how nets work and what ARES can do during an actual event. This includes the National Weather Service SKYWARN component of ARES despite a non-weather scenario” writes Rob Macedo, KD1CY, Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section Emergency Coordinator.

With the ongoing COVID-19 situation in MA, it will be unlikely that groups will be able to operate at EOCs and other municipal locations. Therefore any activation of shelters will be simulated by role play. It is likely that most of the operations involved in this exercise will utilize home stations along with field sites on Cape Cod and at other local ARES groups and those local groups’ discretion.

Some exercise objectives include:
• Simulate the activation of shelters in your area;
• Simulate the activation of EOC stations in your area;
• Establish and conduct a tactical net on simplex 2m FM/ repeater for your group;
• Simulate contact with any Town EOC RACES stations (Home stations is OK if COVID restricted) ;
• Establish contact with other ARES districts where possible;
• Establish an HF 75 meter voice net for all of MA (and potentially other areas);
• Establish an HF 60 meter voice net for all of MA (and potentially other areas);
• Pass an NTS type message on 2 meters VHF and/or 440 MHz;
• Pass a SKYWARN and/or tactical message on voice 2 meters and on the HF net;
• Optional components of the exercise to pass information digitally via Winlink and NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System) on VHF and HF between stations locally and to Red Cross

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR MARCH 2021

March saw the beginning of spring and was a busy month on the traffic nets. Our section phone net, Massachusetts Rhode Island Phone Net (MARIPN) expanded to six evenings per week and has continued to average around 8 check-ins per session. They now meet Monday through Saturday at 1700 (5PM) on 3978 Khz and all are welcome.

The section CW net MARI continues to do well and consistently sends liaisons to both sessions of the evening CW region nets to handle traffic going to and from the rest of the country. Also on the CW scene, we now have a slower speed CW training net, MARISN thanks to Rob K2MZ. This net is run at 10 words per minute for the purpose of training in CW net and traffic protocol. This is a good opportunity to practice your CW skills as well. No one is expected to be perfect so don’t wait until you think you can do it perfectly. Join us on this net Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 2030 or 8:30PM on 3598 Khz.  See information about how to participate on our section website under MARISN net.

The Eastern Mass 2 Meter Net (EM2MN) training program has been producing new traffic handlers and as a result we just announced two new Official Relay Station (ORS) appointments, Jack KB1SYL and Ethan KC1OIP, giving the net added outlets for message traffic. Peter KC1HHO, net manager says two more trainees are near to receiving the ORS appointment as well, and hopefully next month we will be announcing those as well. Peter is also training new net control stations and welcomes Bernie KC1MSN as a net control on Sundays.

Heavy Hitters Traffic Net (HHTN) has been working through some technical issues, but manager Joe W1HAI has been diligently making improvements so that the net has expanding and improved coverage throughout Massachusetts. There are several ways to access this net, via the MMRA repeater network, Mt Greylock repeater, Plymouth repeater, and Echolink.

The Cape and Islands Traffic Net (CITN) meets four nights a week and three of their participants also represent that area on the section phone and CW nets giving us reliable outlets to that part of the state. CITN meets Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays on the 147.375 Falmouth repeater at 1930 (7:30PM).  Anyone vacationing on the Cape do check them out.

Net information and other information about traffic handling can be found on our section website ema.arrl.org, superbly maintained by Phil K9HI. Many thanks to Phil for all his help with our NTS page. Also note our group forum on groups.io. Search for MA-NTS group and request to join.

See you on the nets. 73, Marcia KW1U STM

NEW SLOW SPEED CW TRAFFIC NET

Want an opportunity to practice your newly acquired CW skills or brush up on old skills once learned but not used for many years? Learn and practice the art and skill of handling written messages, and have some fun along the way. You’ve asked for it and now we are reviving a slow speed CW traffic net. It is called MARISN or Massachusetts Rhode Island Slow Net and it will be meeting four evenings a week on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at 8:30 PM local time on 3598 kHz.  Rob, K2MZ, has offered to organize and manage this net. He has been a successful teacher of CW and has been active on our various traffic nets. He is welcoming all comers. Come join us beginning Monday, March 22, 2021. Looking forward to seeing you there.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR FEB 2021

Greetings all, and a happy month of spring’s beginnings. As I write this temperatures have been in the 70’s. Of course it will cool off again and maybe even snow again but we enjoy the warmth while it’s here, a good time to get out with those HTs and portable radios, hiking, cycling and exploring the many facets of amateur radio.

And while you’re out, or if you’re in, you can participate in one of our many traffic nets, even send a radiogram. I am happy to announce that the Mass Rhode Island Phone Net has expanded it’s sessions to six evenings a week, Monday through Saturday. Find us on 3978 Khz plus or minus to avoid interference at 5 PM whether you have traffic or not.  One of the fun aspects of traffic nets is the camaraderie we experience. Get to know the folks on the net. Often time is set aside following the passing of traffic for comments. Keep in touch with the new friends you meet.

Our primary purpose of course is to handle message traffic. This is where we gain the knowledge and practice the skills that may one day be called upon in an emergency situation. We aim to be as professional as possible, yet remembering that this is a hobby, something that folks really enjoy doing with their leisure time and something we promote as a fun activity. We welcome newcomers, inviting them to join in the fun and encourage them in a kind and friendly way. Check out the many nets on both VHF and HF, voice and CW, and check out our digital network as well. Contact Section Traffic Manager Marcia KW1U as well as any of the net managers for details.

Below is an account of the net and net participant activities for February. Hope to see you soon.

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net – Monday March 1st, 2021 at 830 PM on the MMRA Repeater Network

Hello to all…

The March Eastern Massachusetts ARES section net will be Monday March 1st, 2021 at 830 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.

For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:
http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. For this month’s ARES Net, we have a high wind event expected for the area Monday Night into Tuesday Morning so any reports of wind damage or wind gusts of 40 MPH or greater would be helpful to the National Weather Service. We will have comments regarding upcoming ARES training and an exercise coincident with a National Red Cross exercise on Saturday May 8th, 2021.

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JAN 2021

As we look forward to spring and daylight savings time, we also look forward to some new happenings in the traffic world of Eastern MA. Because we have seen a big increase in the number of check-ins on the Mass Rhode Island Phone Net, we have decided to increase the number of sessions per week from three to six. More information will be forthcoming in the next few days so stay tuned to an announcement on this website.

In addition one of our newer traffic handlers on the CW net (he is also on the phone net and CM2MN) Rob K2MZ has made an offer I can’t refuse. We will be organizing a slow speed CW net, and I mean slow, slower than MARI CW, for those wanting to get their feet wet in CW message handling. More details will be forthcoming in the near future, but stay tuned for an announcement on our section website as well.

We are also seeing more new traffic handlers on EM2MN as a result of KC1HHO’s training, and so nice to hear Bob N1SYC back again from Plymouth. Nice to have an outlet down that way again.

Last month we reported the link on HHTN with the Mt Greylock repeater was down, but happy to say it has been restored so we’re back to almost statewide coverage on that net.

I believe on March 14 we will be back to Daylight Savings Time so the daytime First Region Net will be changing times for both sessions to 1445 and 1615. Announcement will be made prior to that change.

Below is the January section traffic report. Thanks to all for your great support.

73, Marcia KW1U

Eastern MA Hospital Nets

Hello,

Covid-19 restrictions are still in place for EOCs, and Amateur Radio Volunteers at Healthcare facilities are still locked out. Although some home stations have been participating in the Nets most home stations are unable to reach multiple repeaters unlike the Hospital Stations. Because of the diminished numbers and results, I am suspending the Eastern MA Hospital Nets until further notice.

We are nearing the point in time where a large majority of Hospital HAM Volunteers will be eligible to be vaccinated. Hopefully, once this is completed we will once again be able to man our hospital stations and resume the NETS.

Stay safe, 73s

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for February – Monday February 1st, 2021 at 830 PM on the MMRA Repeater System

Hello to all…

The February Eastern Massachusetts ARES section net will be Monday February 1st, 2021 at 830 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.

For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. For this month’s ARES Net, given the major winter storm affecting the region, we’d like to ask all stations to provide a measured snowfall total, whether precipitation is occurring and their current temperature if they have thermometer. We will also have comments on the Eastern Mass ARES Section Exercise for Saturday February 6th, 2021 from 1000 AM-1200 PM.

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Exercise – “Operation Frozen Days” – Saturday 2/6/21 – 1000 AM-1200 PM EDT

The Eastern MA Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) will conduct an exercise in conjunction with the Cape Cod ARES exercise Operation “Frozen Days” on February 6, 2021 from 10 AM to 12 Noon (setup to start at 830-9 AM where needed) to test its capability in establishing communications with stations inside and outside of the section. Operation “Frozen Days” will attempt to build upon the lessons learned from past operational exercises.

The exercise scenario involves a series of coastal storms battering Cape Cod and the Islands with winds over 90 MPH over several storms. Eventually, hundreds of thousands of people in Eastern Massachusetts are left without power due to this series of coastal storms.

“This exercise guideline is deliberately broad and generic in nature like the fall exercise. ARES groups are free to adapt this scenario and conduct their exercise as needed for their group,” writes District Emergency Coordinator Frank O’Laughlin, WQ1O.

“This is another great opportunity, similar to the Fall exercise, for new Amateur Radio Operators, whether they are involved in ARES or not, to check into nets, provide simulated information and exercise traffic, or just check in and learn how nets work and what ARES can do during an actual event. This includes the National Weather Service SKYWARN component of ARES” writes Rob Macedo, KD1CY, Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section Emergency Coordinator.

• Simulate the activation of shelters in your area;
• Simulate the activation of EOC stations in your area;
• Establish and conduct a tactical net on simplex 2m FM/ repeater for your group;
• Simulate contact with any Town EOC RACES stations;
• Establish contact with other ARES districts where possible;
• Establish an HF 75 meter voice net for all of MA (and potentially other areas);
• Pass an NTS type message on 2 meters VHF and/or 440 MHz;
• Pass a SKYWARN and/or tactical message on voice 2 meters and on the HF net;
• Optional components of the exercise to pass information digitally via Winlink and NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System)

For full details, see the “Eastern MA Exercise Scenario and Guidelines” document at Eastern Massachusetts ARES Winter Exericse – Saturday February 6th, 2021

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2020

Greetings from your STM. I hope all our friends are remaining well and safe from the Covid virus and that amateur radio may be helping some from going stir-crazy due to activity restrictions resulting from the virus.

The nets continue to be busy and we have been adding new net attendees and traffic handlers. Peter KC1HHO reports Jack KB1SYL has begun the training program available on EM2MN and Shannon KC1OHT has expressed interest in getting involved. We welcome these newcomers to the program. Other newly licensed hams have also been checking into that net. Also Bob KC1KVY has become a regular on the First Region Net and therefore available to assist with “thru” traffic.

Joe W1HAI reports that HHTN has had to temporarily discontinue the link to the Mt Greylock repeater due to technical difficulties. Among other things this has resulted in the loss of a new NCS for that net, Matt KC1JPU. It is hoped these problems can soon be resolved. Meanwhile we will miss that outlet to the westernmost counties of the state.

The MARI CW net has added a new check in, Rob K2MZ from Worcester. It’s great to have another outlet into Worcester County.

MARIPN has been growing and regularly getting 8 or 9 check-ins and is handling more and more traffic. As that net continues to grow perhaps we will be able to extend to nightly sessions. For now however we continue to meet on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Want to learn CW? More and more folks are becoming interested in learning the art of Morse Code. CWOPS is an organization which sponsors a CW Academy. CWOPS has membership dues, but membership is not required for CW Academy, which is free. The URL is cwops.org/cw-academy   I also recently learned of another less formal group teaching CW for which I have been asked to give a presentation. It is called Long Island CW Club. I’m told there is a $30 annual donation for membership, but I’ve heard good things about their training program. Their classes are also given online. Their URL is longislandcwclub.org

Remember the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo last fall?  There will be another March 13-14 2021. Early bird tickets are $10 and information and registration can be found at www.qsotodayhamexpo.com.

A reminder we have an email group for the purpose of exchange of information including monthly net reports, questions, and discussion of any topic relating to traffic handling and traffic nets. All interested folks can go to groups.io, search for the MA-NTS group and request to join.

Happy hamming and 73,
Marcia KW1U STM

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2020

November was a busy month. Following the ARES Academy in October our traffic handlers put out over 400 radiograms to participants of that event, getting experience in originating third party messages. They were advised to add an op note at the end of each message regarding servicing messages to the station of origin (themselves), which is proper protocol, rather than the signer of the message. Since we see so little real third party traffic these days a lot of confusion has grown up over this procedure. Great job all!

With the help of the above our nets saw a big increase in traffic handled on the nets. Now we are into the holidays and we’re beginning to see some holiday greetings. I encourage all to keep that momentum going and originate some of these to friends and families. It’s something different from a card or email and might even spread word about amateur radio.

Thanks to message handling training given by Peter KC1HHO, manager of EM2MN, we now have two new Official Relay Stations (ARRL Field Service ORS appointment). Thanks to Bernie KC1MSN and Steve KC1NBI for a job well done.

To all those new hams on 2 meters, we hope to see you on the HF bands as you upgrade to General and/or Extra class. You are always welcome on the Mass Rhode Island Phone Net on 3978 Khz at 5 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. If anyone wants to try CW check us out on MARI CW net at 7 PM nightly on 3565. If conditions are such that the skip is long and folks don’t hear each other, we move to 1810 Khz. Even if unable to transmit there, give a listen.

To those on the EM2MN, I may not be around much on the net after the first of the year as I’m moving into an apartment in Maynard MA. I won’t have antennas but I will still have access to my station in Concord which will be monitored by my son Dale K1WU who will be living here. I will be on HF remotely as I learn how to operate that way. I will also try to make HHTN by Echolink if not via the Marlboro MMRA repeater.

Also a reminder that we have a new email group on groups.io. If you haven’t signed up already search for MA-NTS. I will be posting these reports there as well as on ema.arrl.org. The groups is also for any communications, questions, comments, discussion regarding message handling and net operation, anything of interest to the group.

Below is the November traffic report. Meanwhile I wish all you good folks the best of the holiday season with wishes for a happy and healthy 2021.

73, Marcia KW1U

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Does Virtual Meet & Greet with Massachusetts VOAD Via Zoom – Tuesday 11/3/20

On Tuesday Morning, 11/3/20, Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section Emergency Coordinator, KD1CY-Rob Macedo, did a virtual Meet & Greet with Massachusetts VOAD to explain ARES role and how ARES can support Non-Governmental Organizations. The 30 minute meeting was well received by the VOAD leadership that participated. ARES has been a member within the VOAD organization since 2012.

VOAD stands for Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster. The ARRL has a national level Memorandum of Understanding with VOAD and encourages section ARES programs to work with state VOADs. Examples of organizations that are part of VOAD include ARES traditional partners such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army as well as Team Rubicon, various church groups that support disaster relief for individuals and families and many other organizations.

“We got to explain ARES role and what we can provide to Non-Government Organizations in both auxiliary communications, additional resources supporting communications and situational awareness information when normal communications means are up as well as what we can provide to them when other forms of communication fails. We also encouraged VOAD to look at ways we can help their organization based on their communications and technical needs after giving them some understanding of what we traditionally provide and explained to them all the MOUs ARES through the ARRL has with various organizations within VOAD and National VOAD” Macedo said.

Macedo reported that the members on the call understood how Amateur Radio plays a role and is often in the background performing important tasks that help their teams and other agencies. They were impressed with the presentation and look forward to future engagement both with Eastern Massachusetts ARES and Western Massachusetts ARES. “They asked for the Western Massachusetts ARES Section Emergency Coordinator contact info which we provided to them along with a short presentation that we reviewed on the call and we look forward to a continued and stronger relationship with Massachusetts VOAD and the member agencies within VOAD going forward” Macedo said.

SEMARA ARES Activates Net Sunday Morning 11/8/20 for Situational Awareness After Earthquake 3.6 on Richter Scale Occurs Southeast of the New Bedford Area

SEMARA ARES activated an ARES Net at 950 AM Sunday for a little over 2 hours on the 147.000-Dartmouth Repeater, approximately 40 minutes after an earthquake, originally registered 4.2 on the Richter scale and revised down to 3.6 on the Richter scale occurred several miles offshore of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The earthquake was felt as far north as Southern New Hampshire and through much of Rhode Island through parts of Western and Central Massachusetts and Connecticut and the Long Island New York area.

Rob Macedo-KD1CY felt the earthquake at his home in New Bedford while checked into the New England Phone Net on HF on 3945 KHz. “I was checked in and monitoring the New England Phone Net where I heard 2 loud bangs as if someone was in my garage and had opened the garage doors and then had rattling and shaking that was fairly violent from what I’m used to in quakes I’ve felt in the past. After about 15-20 seconds total, it was over and after checking with an Amateur Radio SKYWARN Coordinator and friend from Rhode Island, N1EGS-John Buco, it was clear that we had an earthquake with information posted on the USGS web site. I immediately informed the New England Phone Net of what I experienced and ask for reports on who felt the quake.”

Very quickly things ramped up for a time from a public safety response perspective. Fire departments in New Bedford, Westport, Dartmouth and Fairhaven responded to possible gas leak issues at numerous homes in these communities. Information on posting what you felt during the earthquake was posted on the WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds.

“We informed the National Weather Service within about 5 minutes of the incident that an earthquake had occurred and we were checking on damage reports and sent a report to the USGS via their form for the quake in question” Macedo said. Numerous reports on feeling the quake were fielded from the WX1BOX social media feeds. The Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association has a USGS seismograph and it measured this quake as well – see Cape Ann ARA Seismograph Detected Sunday’s Earthquake

At the suggestion of Mike “Sparky’ Leger-N1YLQ ARES DEC and Region 2 RACES Radio Officer, it was agreed to put up a formal ARES Net on the 147.000-Dartmouth Repeater for situational awareness and in case any needs arrived from partner agencies. From Sparky’s logs, 11 stations checked into the net which ran for a little over 2 hours. The net report is listed below:

N1YLQ-Sparky-Acushnet, MA (NCO)
KA1RSY-Ed-New Bedford, MA
KD1CY-Rob-New Bedford, MA
KC0AEO-South Dartmouth, MA
KC1FOZ-Al-South Westport, MA
KC1ISZ-New Bedford, MA
KC1CBR-Berkley, MA
N1IXC-Joe-South Dartmouth, MA
W1AEC-SEMARA Clubhouse
W1EAV-Chris-Marion, MA
KB1UAM-Anthony-New Bedford, MA

Three confirmed damage reports were received on Crapo Street in the city of New Bedford as relayed by Acushnet Emergency Management Deputy Director, KA1RSY-Ed Caron and KD1CY-Rob Macedo. Three homes sustained damage to the chimney smokestack area near gas mains inside of the residences and were evacuated with 20 people being temporarily displaced. Red Cross was involved in caring for these residents. This information was relayed to the National Weather Service and the minor damage reports were include in the NWS Boston/Norton Earthquake Report. Joe Krisnosky-N1IXC, who is part of New Bedford EMA, forwarded pictures of the damage from New Bedford EMA Director, Brian Nobrega.

“This is an example of ARES in action to provide rapid and precise situational awareness for use by other agencies. In this case, it was the USGS and the National Weather Service” Macedo said.

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Simulated Emergency Test (SET) – Saturday 11/14/20 1000 AM-1200 PM

The Eastern MA Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES) will conduct a Simulated Emergency Test on November 14, 2020 from 10 AM to 12 Noon (setup to start at 9 AM where needed) to test its capability in establishing communications with stations inside and outside of the section. Operation “Fall Fury” will attempt to build upon the lessons learned from past operational exercises. This SET is being done in coordination with a Red Cross national exercise also being held on Saturday 11/14/20.

The exercise scenario involves a fictional Category 1 hurricane which strikes MA/CT/RI as a hybrid coastal storm, battering Cape Cod and the Islands with winds ranging from 90-100 MPH. Eventually, hundreds of thousands of people in Eastern Massachusetts are left without power as the rain rapidly changes to heavy, wet snow.

“This exercise guideline is deliberately broad and generic in nature. ARES groups are free to adapt this scenario and conduct their exercise as needed for their group,” writes District Emergency Coordinator Frank O’Laughlin, WQ1O.

“This is also a great opportunity for new Amateur Radio Operators, whether they are involved in ARES or not, to check into nets, provide simulated information and exercise traffic, or just check in and learn how nets work and what ARES can do during an actual event. This includes the National Weather Service SKYWARN component of ARES” writes Rob Macedo, KD1CY, Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section Emergency Coordinator.

With the ongoing COVID-19 situation in MA, it will be unlikely that groups will be able to operate at EOCs and other municipal locations. Therefore any activation of shelters will be simulated by role play. It is likely that most of the operations involved in this exercise will utilize home stations.

Some exercise objectives include:
• Simulate the activation of shelters in your area;
• Simulate the activation of EOC stations in your area;
• Establish and conduct a tactical net on simplex 2m FM/ repeater for your group;
• Simulate contact with any Town EOC RACES stations;
• Establish contact with other ARES districts where possible;
• Establish an HF 75 meter voice net for all of MA (and potentially other areas);
• Pass an NTS type message on 2 meters VHF and/or 440 MHz;
• Pass a SKYWARN and/or tactical message on voice 2 meters and on the HF net;
• Optional components of the exercise to pass information digitally via Winlink and NBEMS (Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System)
