Framingham ARA Looking For a New Home

The Framingham Amateur Radio Association (W1FY) is looking for a new home. Town officials this month notified tenants of the Danforth Building at 123 Union Avenue that “the heating system in the municipal facility is no longer operable.”

See Metrowest Daily News story Danforth Art Ordered to Vacate Framingham Location by September on May 23, and a follow up opinion piece on May 24 by FARA Director Sumner Wiesman, W1VIV, entitled: Weisman: Framingham radio club losing home.

NOTE: UPDATED EXPLANATION OF SAR AND PSHR

As there is often some confusion on how to get the numbers for Station Activity Reports (SAR) and Public Service Honor Roll (PSHR) reports, a more detailed explanation has been added to the SAR/PSHR Requirements article listed on the left column of this page.  Anyone who handles message traffic is encouraged to submit a Station Activity Report and will be listed on this page.  Those qualifying for Public Service Honor Roll with 70 points or more will also be listed.  Anyone active in public service, not only in traffic nets, is encouraged to submit a report and be listed.

MASS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR APRIL 2016

I hope everyone is enjoying this lovely spring weather which finally came to New England.  Time to start thinking about Field Day, our annual traffic handlers’ picnic and the New England Division Convention at Boxboro.

Field Day this year is June 25 and 26.  Most are familiar with Field Day. Information can be found at http://fd.ema.arrl.org/.  One thing to remind folks about is that extra points can be obtained by sending a radiogram to your Section Manager and Section Emergency Coordinator, and also send 10 or more radiograms to friends and family, perhaps telling them about your participation in the Field Day exercise. Encourage your club stations to get these extra points.  (You may need to show them how to do it.)

The annual traffic handlers’ picnic will again be in Concord at my QTH.  Traditionally we have had this event the first Sunday in August, which this year will be August 7. Set aside this date and plan to join us. More details at a later date.

The now annual ARRL New England Division convention is planned for September 9 through 11.  We plan to have an NTS table again this year and additionally a room for a get together or presentation.  Mark the dates on your calendar and stay tuned.

New England QSO Party Update

New England Map

Tom Frenaye, K1KI writes:

Hope you’ll spend some time operating in the New England QSO Party this weekend!

We’re trying to make sure that we have a lot of activity and it looks like all 67 counties in New England will be active.

As a bonus, there are several stations who will be active from National Parks on the Air locations.

Basic rules:

Date: First full weekend of May (May 7-8, 2016)

Contest Period: 2000Z Saturday until 0500Z Sunday (4pm EDT Saturday until 1am EDT Sunday) and 1300Z Sunday until 2400Z Sunday (9am EDT Sunday until 8pm EDT Sunday).

Categories: Single-operator high power, low power(150w or less) and QRP(5w or less) categories, plus multi-operator, single transmitter. Same four categories for mobiles.

Contest Exchange: Send signal report and state/province (DX stations send signal report and “DX”). New England stations send signal report, county and state. You can find the full rules at http://neqp.org/rules.html. We have 40+ plaques to offer to top scorers.

So far there are eight mobiles who will be out on the road, and another five who may also be enjoying the bumpy back roads of New England.

A list of stations who plan to be active is at http://neqp.org/ryc.html.

Come have fun with us!

QNI NEWSLETTER MAY 2016 EDITION

The May 2016 edition of QNI Newsletter is now available at http://qninewsletter.net/.  There are many interesting articles including an update on the FEMA exercise “Cascadia Rising” which will take place in June 2016.  While there will likely be little if any traffic at the local level outside the states of WA, OR and ID, there will be activity on HF into the Eastern Area which will involve TCC (Transcontinental Corps) and NTSD (NTS Digital)  it is noteworthy that FEMA is interested in NTS involvement and this is an opportunity to show what NTS can do.

MASS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR MARCH 2016

Spring is finally showing up in New England and it’s time to get outdoors, get those yards going, the grass mowed, the plants planted, and oh yes, get those antennas checked.  It was a good month in March for traffic and we have been seeing new hams checking into the nets which is always good to see.  Just a reminder we have a variety of traffic nets and all are good training grounds for message handling and net operation.

EM2MN meets currently on the Quincy repeater 146.67 Mhz PL 146.2 at 8 PM except for Tuesday when it meets on the Sharon repeater 146.865 Mhz PL 103.5

HHTN meets Monday Wednesday and Friday on the Minuteman linked repeater network (check MMRA.org for frequencies) at 10 PM

CM2MN meets daily on the Paxton repeater 146.97 Mhz PL 114.8 at 9 PM

MARIPN meets Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on 3978 Khz at 6 PM

MARI CW meets daily 3565 Khz at 7 PM

New England QSO Party, May 7-8, 2016

New England mapTom Frenaye, K1KI writes:

The NEQP is a great time to check out antenna systems and offers a moderately paced opportunity to work new states and countries. You’ll find a wide variety of participants, from newcomers to experienced contesters, all interested in making contacts with New England stations.

We’re working to make sure that all of the New England counties are active again this year and would appreciate your help. Get on for at least an hour or two and join in on the fun. Please let me know if you can put in any time at all so we can work on activity from the rarest counties. Will you be QRV? Let us know which county you’ll be on from with a message to info@neqp.org

Oh yes, the NEQP is also lots of fun when mobile. Every time you cross a county line the action starts over again. It’s amazing what a 100w radio and mobile whip can do.

The QSO Party is 20 hours long overall, in two sections with a civilized break for sleep Saturday night. It goes from 4pm Saturday until 1am Sunday, then 9am Sunday until 8pm Sunday. Operate on CW, SSB and digital modes on 80-40-20-15-10 meters. For each QSO you’ll give your call sign, a signal report and your county/state.

Last year we had logs from 139 New England stations and 275 more from around the country and world.

The full rules are here -> http://www.neqp.org/rules.html

The 2015 results have been on-line for a week or so and the results since 2002 are also available -> http://www.neqp.org/results.html

It’s just a month until the 2016 NEQP. Please make some QSOs even if you don’t want to send in a log.

Thanks!

Run of The Charles Volunteers Sought, April 24, 2016

Brett Smith, AB1RL writes:

The Run of the Charles is one of the most unique public service events for hams each year. It’s a suite of canoe and kayak races for all different group sizes and course lengths. The variety draws all kinds of participants, and they all rely on us to help keep the event running safely and smoothly.

This year’s Run of the Charles is on Sunday, April 24. The full 26-mile course runs from Riverdale Park in Dedham down to Artesani Park in Brighton. Assignment check-in times vary by location, from 7:30 AM at far start points to 11:00 AM at portages near the finish. Since the CRWA relies on hams for all kinds of logistics, from on-site check-ins to rules infractions, there’s a position for volunteers at any experience level. For more information, visit the race Web site.

Volunteers for this event must have a dual-band (2m and 70cm) handheld radio and an antenna with improved gain over the stock rubber duck. These are necessary because many volunteer sites are low-lying areas where it can be a challenge to reach repeaters. If you can help, please write back with the following information:

  • Your call sign, full name, and name you prefer on the air
  • Phone numbers where you can be reached (cell, home, office)
  • Your preferred e-mail address
  • The transmit band(s) of your radio(s), and other equipment you could bring. Start sites that accept new registrations could benefit from a larger setup—think 10W+ and an antenna like a magmount or better. If you’re able and willing to bring that extra equipment, please let me know.
  • Your shirt size
  • Do you have any needs or requests we should consider when making your assignment?

If you have questions about the run, please get in touch by e-mail or phone (859) 466 5915.

Thank you, and 73,

Brett Smith, AB1RL
Public Service Coordinator, Boston Amateur Radio Club

Boy Scout Radio Badge Instructor Sought

Dave Pascoe, KM3T writes on the YCCC reflector:

The wife of a former colleague and friend of mine is leading a Boy Scout STEM Merit Badge college in April. Her instructor for Radio Merit Badge did not pan out. Does anyone here know anyone who might be interested in teaching basic radio knowledge to teenage boys?

Previous experience is not required – just an understanding of the material. The curriculum is predetermined:

http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Radio

The STEM University is being held at Assabet Valley Regional Technical HS in Marlborough MA on 2 Saturdays (4/9 and 4/30) from 9:00 to 2:30. Scouts are expected to attend both weekends. Each day will consist of 3 one and half hour sessions and a lunch break, you will have the same scouts both weekends.

If you can help please call me on (978) 843-4104 or pass this information along to someone you think might be able to help.

MASS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2016

Last month I talked about copying a message on a net.  After delivering the message you might need to send a message back to the originator.  Anytime a message is undeliverable a service message is required.  If the message you delivered had a handling instruction HXC the originator requests a message back with date and time of delivery. If a handling instruction is HXE the originator requests a reply from the recipient.  Or you might just want to send a message to a family member, a friend or another ham. How do you go about it?

First, have your radiogram form in front of you and fill it out appropriately, including the boxes in the preamble, the full address and phone number if available, the text and signature.  If sending a service message, ARRL Numbered radiograms can be used, ie ARL FORTY SEVEN if a message was successfully delivered, or ARL SIXTY SEVEN if you were unable to make a delivery.  A list of ARRL numbered radiograms can be found on our website. When using one of these texts don’t forget to fill in the blanks.  For example:
ARL FORTY SEVEN 123 K1ABC MARCH 10 2300, or ARL SIXTY SEVEN 456 PHONE 555 321 4566 DISCONNECTED.
When using these ARRL numbered radiograms add ARL to the check in the preamble, ie ARL 8, and spell out the ARL numbers in the text, ie ARL FORTY SEVEN, not ARL 47.  10 digit phone numbers in the text are sent in three word groups, ie 555 321 4566 is three word groups in the check.

When you check into a net, list traffic, and are directed by NCS to send your traffic, remember to read the message at a speed the recipient can copy.  Imagine writing the words yourself as you read.  Read all parts in the order of your radiogram form, using proper prowords where appropriate.  Prowords introduce certain parts of your message and are used for clarity and to help assure accuracy in copying.

In the preamble the only proword we use is the word “NUMBER” at the very beginning.  It is not necessary to say “station of origin is”, “check is”, etc. as the station copying the message is already anticipating the order of the preamble. Following the preamble go immediately into the name, address and phone number, spelling uncommon proper names using proper phonetics as listed on our website. Prior to reading the text, say “BREAK” and pause a few seconds to give the receiving station an opportunity to ask for fills.  If no response, continue on to the text.  NO need to say “how copy”, “text follows” etc.  If the receiving station isn’t copying, he/she will ask for fills as needed.

When reading the texts, spell uncommon words or letter groups, introducing with “I SPELL”.  Introduce number groups with “FIGURES” to distinguish from numbers spelled out. ie “FIGURES 678”.  Introduce an alphanumeric group with “MIXED GROUP”, ie 0230Z”, or for callsigns, “AMATEUR CALL”, ie AMATEUR CALL KW1U”.  At the end of the text, say “BREAK” again, pausing a few seconds to listen for any fills.  If no response, continue to signature followed by “END NO MORE”, or “END MORE” if appropriate.  Again, NO need to say “how copy”.  Receiving station will ask for fills if needed, or say “ROGER”.

That’s it.  Sound complicated?  Not really.  Just remember we have all made mistakes, including your section traffic manager, and we’re all here to learn to do better.  We follow these guidelines since this has proven to lead to better accuracy and efficienty.
