March 5,2016 Eastern MA Hospital Net

Hello Everyone,

Net Control for the March 5, 2016 Eastern MA Hospital Net will be the South Shore Hospital Amateur Radio Club. The net will commence at the usual time of 10am using the following repeaters in the order listed.

1. Plymouth 146.685 tone 82.5

2. Marshfield 145.390 tone 67.0

3. Fall River 146.805 tone 67.0

4. Simplex 147.42

The Net will than return to the Plymouth Repeater for final comments and Net closing.

PLEASE NOTE:

I have been informed that the Genesis Amateur Radio Society has recently worked on their repeater and they believe performance should be improved.

The South Shore Hospital’s repeater 147.345 tone 110.9 recently had improvements completed as well. We would like to test it this month after the regular net to determine the ability of net participants to communicate with it. If the test proves successful we will place this repeater into the regular monthly rotation.

We Hope to hear you all Saturday @10am

Reminder: Monthly EMA ARES Net 3/7 8:30pm

Hello to all….

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for March is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for March is Monday the 7th, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the MEMA Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Marek Kozubal, KB1NCG
EMA Section Emergency Coordinator

MS Walk Boston, April 3, 2016

Brett Smith, ab1rl-pubserv@brettcsmith.org writes:

Throughout the year, the National MS Society organizes walks to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research and patient advocacy. The Boston-area walks have long relied on hams to help ensure everyone’s safety.

This year’s MS Walk Boston is on Sunday, April 3rd. It starts and ends at Boston University’s Nickerson Field in Boston, and runs along the Commonwealth Ave and Charles River. Volunteers will check in at 8:00 AM, and stay until the early afternoon. Lunch is available at the finish.

Rick Savage, KB1LYJ, is organizing the hams for this event. To volunteer, please write him with the following information:

Your call sign, full name, and name you prefer on the air
Contact information: your e-mail address, postal address, and phone numbers where you can be reached (cell, home, office)
Your shirt size
The transmit band(s) of your radio(s), and other equipment you could bring
Do you have any needs or requests we should consider when making your assignment?
In addition to contacting Rick all volunteers must register online. This is a requirement of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Rick can also answer any questions you have about the event.

Thanks for volunteering, and 73,

Brett Smith, AB1RL
Public Service Coordinator, Boston Amateur Radio Club

MASS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JANUARY 2016

It’s hard to believe February is almost over already.  My apologies for being so late with this report.  It is always nice to see new folks checking into the nets.  I suspect there may be others out there listening to see what it is all about.  We can encourage those to check in and join us even if they are not yet ready to take traffic.  However for those who have been checking in but lack the courage to take a formal message for delivery, here are a few points to remember to ensure accuracy.

First of all, it is advisable when new to have a radiogram form in front of you and become familiar with it so you can fill in the blanks.  If you need forms they are available online at arrl.org, or I can send you a template you can print them or send some copies in the mail if you prefer.  Before letting the transmitting station know you are ready to copy you might want to remind him/her you are new so please go slowly.

Accuracy is important so here are some points to remember to assure accuracy.  If you miss words or groups of words, listen for the transmitting station to say “break”, which should be done immediately before and immediately after the text.  Use the following prowords to request the fills you need:

“Say again word after (blank)”, where blank is the word immediately before the one you missed.

“Say again word before (blank)”, where blank is the word immediately after the one you missed.

If you missed a group of words, “Say again between (blank) and (blank)” where the blanks are the words immediately before and immediately after the group you missed.

If you are not sure you copied a word or word group correctly, say “Confirm (blank)”, and transmitting station can confirm or correct as needed.

At the end of the message check to see if the word count in the text agrees with the check count in the preamble.  If it does not you might ask the transmitting station to read through the message again to see where you disagree.  Or you might have him/her go five word groups at a time.

If you are confident you have the message correctly, say “Roger”.

If you have questons, feel free to ask the transmitting station, the Net Control or the Net Manager

Having the message in hand you are ready to deliver it.  Note the article in the left column of this page, “Traffic Tips: Message Delivery”.

Being able to handle record trafic is an important skill, and our nets are a good place to learn and practice.  Next I will talk about originating and sending a message.  Meanwhile below is the traffic report for both East and West Mass for the month of January.  Thanks to all for your support.  73, Marcia KW1U

CALL FOR SPEAKERS – BOXBORO – SEPTEMBER 9-11, 2016

CALL FOR SPEAKERS – BOXBORO – SEPTEMBER 9-11, 2016

Don’t just attend Boxboro 2016—BE A PART OF IT!  The Boxboro Committee seeks fresh and exciting presentations for this year’s ARRL New England Division Convention.  (Note the new date!) As a Boxboro speaker, you will have the opportunity to share your subject and knowledge with Amateur Radio operators from around New England, surrounding states, and Canada.

Last year’s program included top-notch presentations of both a technical, as well as non-technical nature. This year, we will feature workshops on Friday, a Saturday morning keynote address, and an enhanced Sunday program schedule. It’s our hope that Convention attendees will attend the many activities spanning the three-day event.

If you represent a regional club or organization (e.g. YCCC, NEQRP, WRONE, MARS, etc.) we can help facilitate open forums or closed meetings by providing you a meeting space.

Groups who wish to set up information booths should get your requests in early. While the information booths are offered without charge, we ask for some volunteer time in return to assist us with ticket sales and other logistics during the convention.

To register as a presenter, please visit https://goo.gl/Nrwu1g and complete the online form. For the latest information on Boxboro 2016! please visit http://www.boxboro.org, or email or call us if you have additional questions. We look forward to meeting all of you at the convention!

EMA ARES Stand Down

Hello to all…

*** EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS ARES IS STANDING DOWN ITS STAND-BY FOR ALL AREAS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY ***

Eastern Massachusetts ARES is standing down from its standby status that began on February 8, 2016 at 10:00AM. The storm did not bring as big of an impact to the region as was predicted. The strongest winds occurred early in the storm before the snow took hold. The snow was not heavy and wet as it was on Friday, and slightly less snow fell than predicted (6″-11″ vs 10″-18″). However, blizzard conditions were met in southeast Massachusetts and travel and road conditions were not good. There were multiple motor vehicle accidents across the region as well as coastal flooding and more wires and trees down.

I would like to thank everyone who offered their time and gave their availability for deployment either locally or in an ARESMAT scenario. Even though no deployments were required I hope everyone took this opportunity to check their go-kits, check your supplies, and know that the call could come at anytime.

What is ARES Stand-By mode?

ARES stand-by mode is to alert Amateurs within ARES that a mobilization is possible on a wide-scale and that some localized mobilizations are or could be taking place in isolated areas. It means to take a look at your Go-Kit and have batteries and equipment ready to go and charged up and take care of any requirements at home in case a mobilization is required and you can participate. Do NOT self-deploy. Wait for guidance from leadership for any deployment. It is an honor to be ready even if you don’t deploy for the event. Hopefully, this is just another exercise of our preparedness and capabilities. If not, the ARES leadership looks forward to working with you if any wide scale mobilization is required after the impact of this major storm to the region is fully understood.

Thanks for your continued support of Eastern Massachusetts ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

EMA ARES Standby for upcoming winter storm 2016-02-08

Hello to all…

*** EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS ARES PLACED ON STAND-BY FOR ALL AREAS EFFECTIVE 10:00AM MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8 THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING DUE TO POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM FORECASTED WINTER STORM/BLIZZARD ***

*** BLIZZARD WARNINGS HAVE BEEN ISSUED FOR PLYMOUTH COUNTY, THE CAPE AND ISLANDS, AND A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE REST OF EASTERN MA AND RI ***

*** PRIMARY AREA OF CONCERN IS SOUTH OF BOSTON, HOWEVER RESOURCES MIGHT BE NEEDED FROM OTHER AREAS TO SUPPORT THE SOUTH SHORE ***

*** SKYWARN OPS AT NWS-TAUNTON TO COMMENCE AROUND 6:00AM MONDAY ***

With 8700 still without power in eastern Massachusetts and the effects of storm weakened utility lines and trees from last Friday’s storm there exists the potential of major power outages and additional damage across the region on Monday. There is a high confidence of blizzard conditions across southeast MA and the Cape/Islands and of at least scattered power outages in southeast MA. The greatest uncertainty currently is snow amounts west of the I-95 corridor into central MA, as a westward shift in the storm path could bring significant snowfall to the area.

Northeast wind gusts to 50–70 mph possible across Plymouth county, and the Cape and Islands with gusts to 35 mph further inland across the I-95 corridor. Pockets of moderate coastal flooding likely during late Monday morning high tide along the coast south of Boston to Nantucket. Minor costal flooding possible north of Boston through coastal Essex county.

Snow will develop along the south coast and Cape/Islands well after midnight, reaching Boston to Providence before daybreak. Heaviest snow Monday morning into early afternoon with rates of 1–2 inches per hour at times.

For further meteorological updates, including the latest Storm Coordination Message, please see the NWS Taunton SKYWARN home page at http://www.wx1box.org.

In advance of the storm, please advise your local EC/DEC/ADEC (SEC/DEC listed below) of your availability to support a potential deployment anytime over the weekend. We are creating a list of availability for ARESMAT deployment if needed for various local EOC’s, Red Cross, Salvation Army, NWS Storm Survey Teams, and hospitals as required. Keep your situational awareness level high for any updates from ARES leadership by checking your email for updates and our ARES web site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org and monitoring local SKYWARN/ARES/RACES frequencies for any updates on this developing situation.

When sending your availability, please send the following: Name, Call-sign, License Class, Capability (HF / VHF / UHF), Availability, and any other special notes we should be aware of. Also, please let us know if you can do an ARESMAT to another part of the Eastern Massachusetts section (specifically East Coastal and Southeast Mass/Cape Cod) as this area looks to be particularly hardest hit by this anticipated blizzard. We ask that as you contact your DEC, please send a copy of the message to hurricane@nsradio.org where multiple members of the EMA ARES Leadership will be able to access your availability.

Cape Cod ARES Exercise Saturday 1/30/16 at 10am

Hello to all!

The Cape Cod and Islands District Amateur Radio Emergency Service will conduct a winter operations exercise on Saturday January 30th, starting at 10am, to test its capability in establishing communications with stations within its district and outside it under emergency conditions. The operational exercise called “Dark Shadows” will test the ability of several stations to communicate with a centrally located command station in Sandwich, MA. This will also be a drill to test some of our Hospital stations, primary EOC stations, shelters and other ARES member home stations.

Unlike many previous exercises, this one will also feature home stations prominently as they would be vital in keeping with the scenario being used for this exercise. The exercise will attempt to build upon the lessons learned from our past operational exercises. This time, we will not be concentrating mainly on expedient setup of equipment outdoors. We will be attempting to operate our gear using emergency power within our served agency communications centers, EOCs, primary stations and home stations. Emergency power will be the primary focus of our exercise.

Operations will be conducted over HF, VHF, and UHF radio using SSB and FM voice, and digital NBEMS/Fldigi. We are especially interested in out of area HF stations over NVIS and any long distance VHF/UHF abilities or relays.

The exercise document can be found here:

MASS RHODE ISLAND PHONE NET REPORT

Summary report of the Massachusetts Rhode Island Phone Net

From October through December 2015 the net had:

  • Sessions: 38

  • Messages: 32

  • Total check-ins: 140

  • Different stations checking in: 22

Thank you for your participation and support, especially the support from section leadership and those hams who are personally unable to participate in the net.

Ralph N1LAH, Net Manager

MASS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 2015

Winter finally made its way into New England and without all those outdoor chores set aside for now its a good time to stay indoors and play radio.  Anyone get new ham radio toys for Christmas?  Try them out and join us on one of the traffic nets, or try some digital message handling using Packet radio with several message boards serving Eastern Mass, including KW1U, N1XTB or K1CKK (Cape Cod).  See KW1U or KC1CIC for more information on how to get involved.  K1HEJ has compiled a traffic report for the VHF BBS at N1XTB-4 for the month of December.  This BBS handled 397 incoming and 397 outgoing messages.  More will follow on the digital scene in future months.

The Mass Rhode Island Phone Net has been picking up activity since its inception in the fall, thanks to the efforts of Manager Ralph N1LAH.  While this is a traffic net, there is also an informal component for socialization and discussion of subjects of interest to amateur radio.  Check it out at 6PM Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on 3978 Khz plus or minus for QRM.  Remember to look around that frequency as the net is sometimes forced to move due to interference.

Heavy Hitters Traffic Net has also been picking up new check-ins, especially folks new to traffic handling who are looking for information.  While HHTN meets only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the Minuteman Repeater Network at 10 PM, manager Joe W1HAI has decided to have informal sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the purpose of helping new and prospective traffic handlers with information on nets, message handling and NTS.  He has encouraged more “seasoned” traffic handlers to check in as well to help answer questions.  The first of these sessions has met already as of this writing and was well attended.  A good discussion followed and many questions were answered.  All are welcome to check in.  Bring your questions.

Below is the traffic report for the combined sections of East and West Mass for both November and December.  My apologies for not getting the November report on the website last month.  Many of you did see that report sent out via email.  Thanks to all for your support of the nets.

MASS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2015

Summer has wound down and leaves have mostly fallen.  I hope everyone has those antennas ready for winter.  With the change of seasons band conditions have also improved on HF.  The newly reactivated MARIPN is finding they are hearing more distant stations, which unfortunately has made it more difficult to find a nitch for the net.  Net manager Ralph N1LAH has suggested folks tune up and down at least 5 Khz either way from the published frequency to look for the net.  The afternoon region net on the other hand is finding folks around the region can now hear one another, so hopefully participation will pick up again.

The Boston repeater has been having problems again.  The folks at BARC are aware and plan to make repairs when they are able to do so.  Meanwhile, until further notice and thanks to the effort of ASTM Greg KC1CIC, we have permission to use the Quincy repeater, 146.67 Mhz, PL 146.2 every evening except Tuesday.  Tuesdays the net will run on the Sharon repeater, 146.865 Mhz PL 103.5.  After polling our regular checkins Greg found that most folks are able to get into the Quincy repeater.

To those Friday evening visitors to the EM2MN you have no doubt noticed the absence of Joe O’Brien K1LCQ.  Joe has been Friday NCS for many years and always very dependable.  Unfortunately Joe ran into some health complications and has been off the air.  We have been informed he is on the mend and hopes to be back soon.  We wish Joe the very best.

Follows the October report for both East and West Mass.  Thanks to all for your support.
