PART Pumpkin Patrol, Oct. 31, 2006

Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford logopumpkinTerry Stader, KA8SCP writes on PART-L:

“As we have done for many years, [the Police Amateur Radio Team] will once again be providing a Pumpkin Patrol service to the Town of Westford. Many of you are veterans and others may be volunteering for the first time… which ever you are… thank you in advance for your help!

“I will not be able to be in town for this event, so I am looking for someone (or a pair of someones) who will be willing to run the net from the Police station and act as the liason to the police department for the evening.”

HWC Antique QSL Collection Highlighted On ARRL Web

Harvard Wireless Club logoAn ARRL Web feature article entitled Surfin’: Collecting Memories highlights several on-line collections of antique QSL cards, including one from the Harvard Wireless Club.

Perhaps the most unique card in the collection is one confirming a 2-way contact with WJS, the famous Hamilton Rice Expedition of 1924-25 that explored the headwaters of the Amazon River.

The card, sent from Belem, Brazil states: “Greetings 1AF. This is first opportunity to mail your card re: our QSO Jan 22, ’25 at 3:50 AM 60 MT. Also to thank you for courtesy in QSR. Expedition closed down. Now bound for USA. Rgds & 73s.”

HossTraders logoRick Zach, K1RJZ writes on FraminghamARA-L:

“It looks like WCVB-TV meteorologist Harvey Leonard will be plugging Hosstraders during the main Channel 5 Thursday newscast sometime between 5PM and 6:30PM.

“He will tie his forecast to Hosstraders reputation for rain…. but no rain this weekend!”

W1AA To Activate Stage Harbor Light Oct. 7

W1AA/ Stage Harbor Light QSL cardK1VV and N1DT plan to activate Stage Harbor Light (USA 806) under the call W1AA on on October 7, 2006 from 7:30 AM EDST (1130 UTC) until about 2:00 PM EDST (1400 UTC).

Whitey, K1VV notes that he and Don, N1DT will begin operations on 75 meters, above 3980 kHz. Check 3996. Operation will start on 75 meters. On 40 phone, look for W1AA between the nets. “Most likely below 7270, down to 7225. Check 7234,” writes K1VV. They’ll be on 20 phone later in the morning above 14310, or 17 meters above 18150. “We will return to 40 phone about 1530 to 1600 UTC, about noon local time.”

Morse code operation will be conducted roughly on the half hour, on 7035, 10116, 14035 and 18080 kHz, plus or minus QRM.

“We should be able to access the RF packet node 20 miles away so we will be posting our spots on the DX Summit. But we would appreciate any spots,” Whitey adds. See http://oh2aq.kolumbus.com/dxs/hfdx25.html.

DX QSLs are via the W1 Bureau and stateside are via W1AA please with an SASE. A photo of the lighthouse will be furnished.

“In 1876 the Lighthouse Board recommended that a lighthouse be built on Harding’s Beach on the northeast side of the channel known as Chatham Roads, saying that the light ‘would serve as a guide into old Stage Harbor, and would be of great value to vessels seeking refuge there and during bad weather.’ The area was busy with fishing traffic and thick fog was common. In 1880 the 48-foot iron tower and wooden keeper’s house were finished at a cost of $10,000. Today, the skeleton tower continues as an active aid to navigation, exhibiting a white flash.”

Eastern Massachusetts ARES SET Exercise Saturday November 4th 10 AM-1230 PM

Hello to all….

Eastern Massachusetts ARES will be having its Simulated Emergency Test (SET) exercise on Saturday November 4th, 2006 from 10 AM-1230 PM. This will be the third and final exercise for the section in 2006. This was announced on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Monthly Net on the MMRA Repeater system.

Details of the Simulated Emergency Test exercise will be announced as we get closer to the event. This is done purposely to cause preparations for the exercise to be completed in a shortened timeframe. This is much like what would be expected of our program if a disaster hit. The scenario will not be a weather related scenario.

We would like to encourage participation of RACES, MARS, SATERN and Red Cross communicators with the SET wherever possible. We’ve had a very active spring and summer with the severe weather and flood events kicked off by the worst flooding in Northeast and North-Central Massachusetts and Southeast New Hampshire in 70 years in the May 13th-15th, 2006 timeframe, however, since early September, the weather has been quiet so the exercise is timely in that it will keep Eastern Massachusetts ARES readiness at a very high level.

Again, further details will be posted later this month. Thanks to all for their continued support of Eastern Massachusetts ARES!
