Falmouth ARA Seeks Ham Help For Cape Cod Marathon

Falmouth ARA logoThe Falmouth Amateur Radio Association is seeking additional hams to assist in the Cape Cod Marathon on October 28, 2007. According to the club web site, “This is a true marathon and counts as a qualifier for many of the larger marathons. It might not attract as big a field as the [Falmouth] Road Race, but this is one race where FARA members are often busy in chase cars and on chase bikes, tracking down errant runners who stray from the course and may be in need of medical assistance.”

Hams participants also provide coordinating communications for the officials in addition to the medical communications.

A “pre-marathon meeting” is scheduled the day before on Saturday, October 27 in the rear of the Town Hall.

To sign up, visit http://www.falara.org/forms/joinmarath.pdf.

Framingham ARA To Offer General, Extra “Crash” Courses

Framingham ARA logoThe Framingham Amateur Radio Association is sponsoring two “Crash” courses for hams wishing to upgrade to Extra or General. The Extra class meets on two successive Saturday mornings, 9 to 12 noon on September 22 and 29; the General class will also meet on two successive Saturday mornings on October 20 and 27, 2007.

Both sessions will be held at the club location, the basement of the Danforth Museum on Lexington Street in downtown Framingham. No fee is required, but prior registration is recommended. For further information call Ed W1NXC at 508-881-2301 or contact a FARA club officer.

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for September

Hello to all….

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for September is rapidly approaching. It was delayed one week due to the Labor Holiday last Monday to conincide with the RACES Nets which was also delayed one week for Labor Day.

The monthly ARES Net for September is Monday September 10th, 2007, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

Whitman ARC Donates ARRL Books to Library

Donation of ARRL books to Whitman LibraryThe Whitman Amateur Radio Club presented a donation of fifteen ARRL books to the Whitman Public Library on September 5, 2007. The book package was purchased from the League for approximately $200.00. The gift complements the library’s existing QST subscription that the club has provided for many years. A press release about the donation is being prepared for the local papers.

Framingham ARA Offers EmComm Reimbursements

Framingham ARA logoThe Framingham Amateur Radio Association has introduced an innovative program in which club members who successfully complete the ARRL EmComm Level One on-line course receive reimbursement for their tuition. The idea was suggested by FARA Scholarship Chairperson Dick Cosma, AA1VI.

“This is a great incentive to learn something new and be a part of emergency communications and public service,” writes FARA President Gordy Bello, K1GB. “We hope to build a group of competent EMCOMM people in FARA.”

FARA members who have already passed Level One will have the opportunity to receive the same reimbursement if they successfully pass Level Two. Bello encourages all club members to take advantage of this special offer.

Whitman ARC Fox Hunt, Oct. 6, 2007

Whitman ARC logoJeff Lehman, N1ZZN writes:

It’s been a while since there’s been a fox hunt (hidden transmitter hunt) here on the south shore. The Whitman Amateur Radio Club will be sponsoring a fox hunt on Saturday, October 6th at 10:00 AM. Paul, N1VTI will be the fox, and the area will be limited to within the town of Whitman. The smaller area will give everyone a chance to dust off their fox hunting skills, and not waste too much gas.

As we discussed at the meeting, people are encouraged to work together in teams to find the fox. Paul, N1VTI has graciously offered to host a cookout at his QTH following the hunt, which will last until noon. The hot dogs will be provided by the club.

The date was chosen so we can do a review of fox hunting at the Wednesday October 3rd meeting, where we will show the fox hunting video that was produced by K1VV several years ago. This date was also chosen to not interfere with the Deerfield, NH NEARFest, which will be held the following Friday-Saturday (Oct. 12-13).

Please help spread the word to all of those who have participated in fox hunts in the past.

W1DAN Featured in Monitoring Times Article

W1DAN at WRNOWellesley ARS club president Dan Brown, W1DAN is a featured author in the August, 2007 issue of Monitoring Times with an article entitled WRNO: Can This Station Be Saved?

From the article:

“Off the air since the late 1990s and sold to the Good News Outreach group in 2001, monitors began to suspect that restoring WRNO was just a pipe dream. But stay tuned: Dr. Mawire’s pipe may yet get lit before the end of this year.

“WRNO is a station with a colorful past remembered with fondness by many. Attempts to revive the station were impeded by Hurricanes Cindy and Katrina. If the transmitter site can avoid further damage this hurricane season, the old girl may find new life as a religious station broadcasting to the Middle East.”

The magazine cover features a photo of W1DAN as he surveys a broken feedline during his visit to the transmitter site in 2006.

Whitman Hams Score PR With: “Frequency Fliers”

Whitman ARC logoMembers of the Whitman Amateur Radio Club scored valuable PR from the inclusion of a chatty, general interest story about the club and Amateur Radio in the July 25, 2007 issue of the Whitman Times. The article, entitled Frequency Fliers, featured interviews with a number of WARC members describing their hobby interests. The public service aspects of Amateur Radio were highlighted, including the passing of health and welfare messages, SKYWARN activations, as well as communications for public service communications at triathlons and road races. The article also featured nice color photos of Jeff Lehman, N1ZZN and Paul Moss.

North Shore ARES To Provide Limited Support to Peabody International Festival

Hello to all….

The following was posted to the North Shore ARES and North Shore Radio Assocation email lists by ARES Emergency Coordinator, Jim Palmer-KB1KQW:

Attention all North Shore Amateurs! We have been contacted by the City of Peabody Emergency Management department to provide limited support for the Annual International Festival to be held in Peabody Square on Sunday, September 9th from 11:30am until 6:00pm. This will be a relatively easy and informal event to support. All that is required is any amateur interested in attending the Festival is asked to bring their HT’s along with them and tune to the 146.88 (-) 118.8 PL NS1RA Salem Repeater. We will be looking for the following information…

– Check-in with us to tell us you are at the festival

– Check-out with us when you leave

– Watch out for Health and Safety…if you see something that requires attention…let us know!

Net Control will be operating at an undisclosed location. Due to the nature of the event, we are unable to discuss it over the air…so please do not ask, nor discuss it on air. However, if you would like to arrange to see our operation, please contact Jim or Eric IN ADVANCE (before the festival) so we can try to arrange that for you. Please note that we cannot guarantee these arrangements and may not be able to accommodate every request, depending on what is going on at the time.

If you have any questions about this event, please let either me or Eric know and we will do our best to answer them for you. I will update this e-mail next week if we get further information, and you can also visit www.nsradio.org for updates.

Thanks again to all for their continued help and support of North Shore ARES.

Jim Palmer – KB1KQW
North Shore ARES Emergency Coordinator
North Shore Assistant SKYWARN Coordinator
