Rumor Control Note: This is not an idea or suggestion list.  Although we are asking a wide range of questions here, it does not mean that any particular idea is under active consideration.  Our goal is to permit a broad range of opinions and ideas to be gathered.  The results will be used in discussions by the Emergency Communications Advisory Committee during development of guidance to the ARRL Board of Directors.

14th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Field Day Directory Now On-line

2013 Field Day logoThe 14th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Field Day Directory contains some of the most comprehensive Field Day resource pages of its kind.

According to Bill Ricker, N1VUX, the section Field Day pages offer detailed information on individual field day club operations along with the complete event operating rules and helpful safety tips.

“Clubs which are reactivating a previous Class A or F site can confirm to the EMA Directory by simply putting their pin in at the ARRL Locator – conveniently linked from our directory. I’ll pick that up and mark them confirmed. I would appreciate an email from new clubs in Class A or F, clubs with new sites, clubs whose details on their EMA directory need updating, or who are definitely not using the site they had last year. Brett Smith, AB1RL writes:

May has arrived with warmer weather, and that means we’re thick in the middle of the public service season. There are two events in May that [the Boston Amateur Radio Club] provides support for, and both could use more help:

* Saturday May 18: the MS Journey of Hope Walk in Natick. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Rick Savage, KB1LYJ: rpsavage@comcast.net, (781) 289 7364.

* Sunday May 19: the National Brain Tumor Society Boston Bike Ride, from Waltham to Carlisle. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Jim Bradley, KB1JKJ: bradleyjab@gmail.com, (781) 953 8928.

Amateurs help keep these events safe and running smoothly for anyone, and it’s a great feeling to be a part of that. I hope you’ll join us for one of these events if you can. If you ever have questions about any of BARC’s public service events, contact me at this address, or phone (859) 466 5915.

TRAFFIC REPORT FOR EAST AND WEST MASS MARCH 2013

Greetings folks.  Hope everyone is enjoying spring weather and getting those antenna projects done.  Here it is May and I realized I didn’t get the March report posted here.  As you may know I am Section Traffic Manager for both East and West Mass.  I decided to combine the reports for both sections and have a link for the West Mass folks to this page.

Participants of the East Mass Two Meter Net should be aware there have been problems with the Boston 145.230 repeater.  Club president NV1W has informed me they believe it is an antenna problem, but have been unable to get someone to the top of the Federal Reserve Building to make repairs.  Folks especially from the south of Boston have been unable to access the repeater.  Some even in the vicinity of Boston have encountered problems.  This station has a 13 element beam up 50 feet situated around 20 miles from Boston and have problems being heard.  We used to be able to use the Waltham repeater as a back up but apparently since that repeater was moved it does not have the coverage it used to have.  The Sharon repeater (146.865 PL 103.5) has good coverage, but not all are able to access that.  There has been a net session running on the Sharon repeater, and at times there are sessions running concurrently on both repeaters.  This causes some confusion, but I hope everyone will bear with us until the Boston repeater is back to it’s normal excellent coverage.

A reminder to all with HF capability, there are two section nets operating Monday through Friday: The Mass Rhode Island Phone Net on 3918 Khz at 5:30 PM, and the Mass Rhode Island CW Net (slow speed) at 7:00 PM on 3565 Khz.  These nets provide liaison to the Region Nets and we could use more help on both these nets.  See Jim N1LKJ for information on the phone net, and Marcia KW1U for information on the CW net.

If any are not submitting Station Activity Reports (SAR) or Public Service Honor Roll reports (PSHR) note information on this website.  We encourage more to report.  The PSHR requires a minimun of 70 points to be listed.  The SAR has no minimun.  Reports are sent to KW1U on the nets, on the N1XTB-4 BBS or via email at kw1u@arrl.net.

Thanks to all for your participation.  Tell another ham how much you enjoy the nets.  Let’s see if we can encourage more to participate.

73, Marcia KW1U

Team HAMCOW & W1ACT – 20th Annual DX-Pedition to Martha’s Vineyard May 3-5, 2013

Roland Daignault-N1JOY writes:

Hi All,

I hope you can join us on the air next weekend while Team HAMCOW is
operating W1ACT from the Gay Head Lighthouse on Martha’s Vineyard. This
is our 20th annual trip to this location, and we will be on air for the
New England QSO Party, ARLHS, County Hunters (Dukes, MA), US Islands,
IOTA, NEQP, and 7QP, and just plain old fun and casual operating. We
will be on air Friday May 3rd until Sunday May 5th.

You can follow our activity throughout the weekend at: http://hamcow.net/

Even though we are operating portable and from a somewhat remote
location, we will have a dedicated broadband Internet connection
allowing us to do cool things such as real time online log checking
which also allows you to see what frequency & mode we are currently
operating, updating our web page regularly with cool photos, and even
hosting a high definition webcam so you can see the activity inside the
HAMCOW live as it happens! (Sorry – Internet Explorer is required to
view the webcam streaming video.)

The crew will be arriving on Martha’s Vineyard to set up Thursday
afternoon, and will be on air just a few hours later, and staying active
as long as possible until Sunday night. I hope you can follow our
antics throughout the weekend and help put a lot of points into our
contest logs.

Thanks!

Boston Marathon Coordination Message #1 – Monday April 15th, 2013

Hello to all..

While this may be a bit off topic for some SKYWARN Spotters, Amateur Radio Operators and Red Cross volunteers, many of which are SKYWARN Spotters, will be involved in the Boston Marathon on Monday April 15th. To reach out to the highest level of Amateur Radio Operators involved in the event, this coordination message is being sent out to the SKYWARN email list and posted to the various Amateur Radio lists. We appreciate everyone’s patience with this message. This is likely to be the only coordination message on the Marathon unless a significant change in the weather forecast occurs. See information below:

Eastern Massachusetts ARES members not participating in the Boston Marathon should be in a heightened state of awareness for marathon activities on Monday April 15th from 7 AM-7 PM for any significant issues outside of the Boston Marathon that may require Amateur Radio Emergency Communications support and for any unexpected issues on the Boston Marathon route. With over 300 Amateur Radio Operators staffing the Boston Marathon route, the start line and the finish line, if an issue arises needing Amateur Radio support outside of the Marathon route or an unexpected issue arises in marathon operations, it is important that any ARES members not involved in the marathon can help with any response that is required. There will be two backup operation centers including the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net Control Center at the town of Bridgewater EOC.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) UCC (Unified Command Center) at the SEOC (State Emergency Operations Center) will be active for the Boston Marathon. Amateur Radio Operators will be at the SEOC to support backup operations while many agencies will be there performing primary operations for the marathon.

The weather outlook for the Boston Marathon is one that should be favorable for volunteers and favorable to slightly warm for the runners. The Weather Forecast across the Boston Marathon is for partly to mostly sunny conditions throughout the day. There will be a 10-15 MPH breeze with isolated higher gusts. Temperatures will range in the upper 30s early in the morning warming to around 50 degrees by mid to late morning to the upper 50s to lower 60s by afternoon. This means that conditions for the runners should be reasonable with an ‘average’ amount of ambulance requests along the route versus some prior years where warmer weather conditions resulted in some of the highest amounts of ambulance requests since Amateur Radio Operators have handled the event. It is noted that conditions this year are much cooler than last year so ambulance requests should be lower than what occcurred last year.

For Amateur Radio, Red Cross and all other volunteers along the route, it is recommended that you dress in layers for this event so that you can put on or take off clothes as needed for comfort. Be sure to drink liquids and eat properly during the event and that you are self-sufficient so that you can be of full help to the function and not distract everyone from the main purpose of supporting the runners by having a health issue on your end that can be avoided. No rain is expected at this time so there should be no need for rain gear.

Barring a significant change in the weather forecast, this will be the only coordination message on the Boston Marathon. We appreciate everyone’s support in this event and hope those that volunteer enjoy themselves and feel the self-satisifcation of supporting this historic event and those that are monitoring the Marathon or events outside of the Marathon realize that the monitoring is an important function as well and is a testament to being able to scale other incidents beyond the marathon if required. Thanks to all for their support!

SECTION TRAFFIC REPORT FOR EAST MASS FEBRURY 2013

February gave us some interesting (well I was trying to be nice about it) weather.  It also gave us some interesting statistics.  The new CW net reported 20 sessions (it meets Monday through Friday), and yet EM2MN which meets daily reported only 12 sessions.  I think some of the problem may be related to reports not turned in.  This is something we can improve upon.  Perhaps a bigger problem has been the reduced power of the Boston repeater.  Folks from further away have been unable to access the repeater.  Byron K1YCQ has been running a net on the Sharon repeater and we thank Byron for that.  However not everyone can access that repeater, including our net manager KB1ENV.  Often two nets were running concurrently which has led to some confusion.  Hopefully the Boston repeater will be back up to its former robust self in the near future and we can get back to normal. Meanwhile if you can’t find activity on Boston, check 146.865.

Also noted in the stats for February are reduced net sessions for both MARIPN (3918 Khz at 5:30) and HHTN (MMRA linked repeaters at 10:00 M-W-F).  Unfortunately Jim N1LKJ, manager of MARIPN was battling respiratory problems much of the month and we missed him dearly.  Jim is feeling better now and we sure are glad to have him back.

Just a point of information:  if there is no NCS by three minutes past net time, ANYONE can assume net control.  You don’t have to be appointed, you don’t have to be experienced.  We’re all friends here.  No one can be criticized for trying, and there will no doubt be help from the peanut gallery.  Let’s try to get 100% nets run and reported.

I would also like to thank all those who turned in SAR (Station Activity Reports) and PSHR (Public Service Honor Roll) reports.  Information on these can be found on this website, and anyone is welcome and encouaged to submit either or both to me.  There are no minimums for SAR although 500 or more points will earn a BPL or Brass Pounders League award.  The PSHR however requires a minimum of 70 points to be listed, and these calls will be found in a subsequent issue of QST.

Thanks to all you fine folks for your participation in the nets.  It keeps us in practice and helps keep the nets alive.  How about originating some traffic to friends or family or other hams you have worked on the air.  Most will get a kick out of it and you will become an ace traffic handler in the process.  See you on the nets.

73, Marcia

Reminder: Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for March 2013

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for March is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for March is Monday March 4th, 2013, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the MEMA Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,
