Cape Ann ARA Participating in Winter Field Day, Jan. 26

Dean Burgess, KB1PGH writes on the Cape Ann ARA mailing list:

Don`t forget to stop by the CAARA Clubhouse today and tonight (Saturday, Jan. 26) for the SPAR winter field day, starting at noon, and running 24 hours until noon tommorrow. We will have a CW and SSB station up and running. At the same time, you can also take a look at the current renovations going on to the second floor where some contest stations are being created — all due to the hard work of Jon, K1TP; Jake, K1LDL; and Ross, W1RAB. We also hope as many Board members as possible can stop by and particpate in this event as well.

Presentation: Technological Changes, 1970 to Present, and Implications for Amateur Radio as an Emergency Communications Service

Gentlemen,

On behalf of the Minuteman Repeater Assn., I invite you to attend a talk on the subject of “Technological Changes, 1970 to Present, and Implications for Amateur Radio as an Emergency Communications Service” which I will present at the MMRA quarterly meeting, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 7:00 p.m at the Northborough Public Library, Main Street (Rte. 20) Northborough.  I also ask that you pass along this announcement to your respective organizations for the benefit on anyone who might be interested.  I hope you can attend and provide valuable feedback.  Anyone may attend, admission is free, membership in the MMRA (and, indeed, an Amateur Radio license) is not required.

Thanks for your help in passing the word.

CW Traffic Net Update

The Massachusetts Rhode Island CW Net (MARI) will convene Monday January 7 at 7:00 PM on or about 3565 Khz.  We will operate a slow speed net and training messages will be provided.  New and experienced ops are welcome.  Currently we will operate Monday through Friday and expand to seven evenings a week if there is enough interest. We will attempt to hold a Q&A session following the EM2MN on the 145.23 Boston repeater for questions and/or discussion.  Hope to see you there.

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for January 2013

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for January is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for January is Monday January 7th, 2013, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the MEMA Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

Eastern Massachusetts Hospital Net – Saturday January 5,2013

Good Evening Everyone and Happy New Year.

A reminder that the Eastern Mass Hospital Net will be conducted tomorrow morning commencing at the usual time of 10am.  The Plymouth repeater will be our starting point and which additional systems will be used for the net will be announced at that time.

A reminder that we have added 2 repeaters to the list available for our use. The Falmouth N1YHS Repeater 147.375 with a tone of 110.9 thanks to the generosity of Ralph Swenson N1YHS and the West Bridgewater K1VNU Repeater 146.755 dpl 244 thanks to the generosity of Gary Cumiskey W1GRC.

We are also happy to announce that The Falmouth Amateur Radio Association has their equipment in place at the Falmouth Hospital and have joined the Net.

If any group or organization would like to run the Net from their facility as the Net Control please let us know. We would like to rotate the Net Control duty among several groups.

We would like to extend an invitation to the EOC of any city or town that is served by one of our participating hospitals to join the Net. During an event it is quite likely that these locations will be activated, and the need to communicate with health care facilities via amateur radio may be a real possibility. Any hospital not part of the net is welcome to join. If you are unable to join due to a lack of equipment or personal please contact us or Carl Aveni at caave@peoplepc.com for assistance in getting your location on the air.

The following list repeaters are available for us to use during the Net. Only 4 or 5 systems are used each month and are rotated with the selection of those used made by the group acting as Net Control for that month.  If you unable to reach a specific repeater please monitor the next system in the rotation and wait for the net to arrive. If you lose contact with the rotation and are not sure where the net is currently located, South Shore Hospital will also be monitoring the the Plymouth Repeater during the Net. You can check with them on Plymouth and ask where the Net is currently located.

When asked to check into the Net by Net Control please use the standard net check in procedure which is: Here is.., un-key, wait 3 seconds to check for doubling, then give your call sign, First Name, facility call sign (if different) and facility / group represented.

Merry Christmas/Happy New Year/Happy Holidays to All!

Hello to all..

On behalf of the Eastern Massachusetts ARES staff, we’d like to take a moment to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holiday season! We have appreciated the support of all Amateurs who assisted in the mobilization for Hurricane Sandy in late October. We also thank all Amateur Operators whether they are in ARES or not who supported all the Public Service Events throughout the year including major events such as the Boston Marathon and the Walk for Hunger just to name a few events. We also thank all the RACES Radio Operators and Officers for their support of their local city and town emergency management as well as state emergency management. In addition, a thank you to some of the new Amateur Radio Operators who are supporting hospitals in the South Coast Hospital chain in the Fall River, New Bedford and Wareham area and those supporting other hospitals around the section including the South Shore Hospital, Falmouth Hospital and several other hospitals on Cape Cod and the Islands. The Eastern Massachusetts Hospital Net, held monthly on the first Saturday of each month led by the efforts of the South Shore Amateur Radio Club, has had several hospital check-ins each month since its inception. For those Amateur Operators that support SKYWARN whether they are in ARES or not, a separate holiday message has been posted via the following link:

http://www.wx1box.org/node/3226

As we move into 2013, we realize that we have not been as proactive as in past years in regards to exercises and training workshops. Therefore, in 2013, we are looking to do more in the way of the section emergency communication workshops similar to past years and plan for one to two exercises as we get towards the middle of 2013. In addition, due to some changes in my own personal status, I’m going to be looking toward our ARES Assistant SECs and DECs to be doing more in their respective districts including more localized training sessions, meetings and exercises to provide additional and more localized support to ARES across our section. We will also be continuing to support hospitals and Non-Governmental Organizations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army building upon the work done in 2012. We also encourage those involved in emergency communications or those that have an interest in weather to become SKYWARN trained to support the National Weather Service for those interested.

Again, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays to all! We look forward to working with everyone during 2013 and thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Massachusetts – Rhode Island CW Net

It is great to see more interest in CW these days.  It really is a fun mode, especially when you aren’t required to learn it for a license.

We had a section CW net (EMRI) for many years, which met every evening at 7:00 PM.  Unfortunately several years ago we disbanded due to lack of participation.  Now, however with the increased interest I would like to see this net operational again.  Since there is no West Mass CW net I would like this net to represent all Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  Because some are working on building their CW skills, or may be a bit rusty, I would like to see a net run at a “relaxed” pace.  You can find opportunities to increase your code speed as you pass traffic, liaise to the region net (1RN), etc.  I will be asking Net Control stations to keep the speed down, and any participants can always ask to please QRS (slow down).  It is helpful if when checking in to send at a speed you are comfortable copying and NCS can return at your speed.  Don’t know how a CW net is run?  Listen, read the MPG on the ARRL website, or ask questions of me, or any NCS.

I don’t have a frequency at this time.  I will have more information later so please monitor this website.  Anyone interested let me know.  I have heard from some of you already.  We will plan to meet at 7PM.  I suggest beginning with five evenings a week.  If enough activity and net control stations available we can add weekends.  Of course we will need traffic, so please plan on bringing some with you, greetings to family, friends, fellow hams you meet on the bands, thanks for contact, let’s make  sked, etc.  Be creative.

Stay tuned, and hope to see you on CW.

73, Marcia KW1U

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for December 2012

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for December is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for December is Monday December 3rd, 2012, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.

December Eastern Massachusetts Hospital Net – Saturday Dec 1, 2012 1000 AM

Good morning everyone,

The Eastern Mass Hospital Net will be conducted this Saturday December 1 commencing at the usual time of 10am. The Net this month will be run from the South Coast led by Ed Caron KA1RSY.

We have made a change to the repeaters and simplex frequencies used for the net. Starting in December we will including the Falmouth N1YHS in our repeater rotation thanks to the generosity of Ralph Swenson N1YHS.  The Falmouth repeater is on 147.375 with a tone of 110.9. Additionally, due to a lack of participation on the Danvers & Salem repeaters we are temporarily removing these repeaters from the list as well as the simplex frequency of 146.565.

We are also reducing the number of repeaters used during the net. Rather than including all of the systems we have available, we instead are going to start rotating the repeaters used monthly with Net Control for that month determining which systems they would like to use. This will allow for a shorter net while at the same time testing all of the available systems.

If any group or organization would like to run the Net from your facility and be put into the Net Control rotation please let us know. It would be great to rotate this duty among several groups.

We are happy to announce that The Falmouth Amateur Radio Association has their equipment in place at Falmouth Hospital and will be joining the net.

We would like to extend an invitation to the EOC of any city or town that is served by one of our participating hospitals to join the Net. During an event it is quite likely that these locations will be activated, and the need to communicate with health care facilities via amateur radio may be a real possibility. Any hospital not currently part of the net is welcome to join. If you are unable to join due to a lack of equipment or personal please contact us or Carl Aveni at caave@peoplepc.com for assistance in getting your location on the air.

The following repeaters will be used in the order listed starting at 10AM unless otherwise announced at the beginning of the Net. If you can not reach a specific repeater please monitor the next system in the rotation and wait for the net to arrive. If you lose contact with the rotation and are not sure where the net is currently located, South Shore Hospital will also be monitoring the the Plymouth Repeater during the Net. You can check back with them on Plymouth and ask where the Net is currently located.

When asked to check into the Net by Net Control please use the standard net check in procedure which is: Here is.., un-key, wait 3 seconds to check for doubling, then give your call sign, First Name, and facility or group represented.

Repeater, Freq, Tone

Plymouth 146.685 tone 82.5
Falmouth 147.375 tone 110.9

Respectfully,
John O’Neill – K1JRO

NOVEMBER 2012 SECTION NEWS

Hurricane Sandy struck the Eastern Seaboard this past weekend leaving
massive devastation in its wake across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic
states. According to the Washington Post, “The powerful storm has
claimed at least 51 lives and caused up to $20 billion in damage.

Closer to home, it’s hard to believe that with almost 400,000 power
outages across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts caused by Hurricane
Sandy at the height of the storm that we would be saying, “we were
lucky” but compared with portions of New York City and New Jersey, we
were indeed lucky. According to Eastern MA SEC Rob Macedo, KD1CY,
“Hurricane Sandy prompted an Eastern MA ARES stand-by and the staffing
of the MEMA Region Two Bridgewater facility, various city and town
Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs), shelters, and Red Cross chapters as
well as SKYWARN activation with operations at the Amateur Radio Station
at the National Weather Service in Taunton, WX1BOX.”

Hurricane Sandy also claimed a historic replica of the HMS Bounty along
with the lives of some of her crew on October 29. According to ARRL:
“Built in 1960 for a remake of the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty –
she sank off the coast of North Carolina as Hurricane Sandy made its
way toward New Jersey. Of its 16 crewmembers, the US Coast Guard
rescued 14. Bounty Captain Robin Walbridge, KD4OHZ, never made it to
one of the two deployed life rafts and is presumed dead. Claudene
Christian, who claimed to be a direct descendent of Fletcher Christian,
was unresponsive and passed away at a North Carolina hospital on Monday
evening.” The full story is at <http://tinyurl.com/ararx3w>.

Roland Daignault, N1JOY fondly recalls his adventures with the Bounty:
“Farewell to an old friend. When the Bounty called Fall River home, I
led several ham radio events on board this great ship. I sailed up and
down Mt. Hope Bay many times, got to know the crew as friends, scoured
nearly every square inch of this ship from the top of the rigging down
to the engine room, stern to the tip of the bowsprit, and once was on
board during one hellacious lightning storm so bad we had arc flashes
jumping between our pieces of radio gear!”

Hurricane Sandy has blown by us now, leaving destruction and pain
behind in parts of our section. Public Information Coordinator Bob
Salow, WA1IDA asks this question: “Hams are known to have supported
much of the preparation, duration and recovery, but how do we get the
general public to know this?” If you know that ham activity associated
with this storm was covered on TV, radio, online, in newspapers, or any
of the public media, please email Bob at wa1ida at arrl dot net with
links or copies of such publicity. Bob adds, “If press releases were
sent and actually used in informing the public, please note this as
well.”

YCCCer W1KM suffered damage to his Marstons Mills antenna farm from
super storm Sandy. His 20-meter yagi was “dangling from the tower and
two of his 80-meter verticals were knocked down. Greg says, “The tidal
surge came within about 6 inches of submerging the 40-meter and
80-meter 4-square phasing/control boxes. These boxes are mounted on
poles about 6 feet above the marsh.” It was the highest tide Greg has
seen at his QTH since Hurricane Bob.

The airwaves were certainly buzzing with reports about the magnitude
4.0 earthquake that struck approximately 30 miles outside of Portland,
Maine on the evening of Oct. 16. The tremors were felt throughout the
Eastern MA section and much of New England.

The Cape Ann ARA is renovating the second floor of its club house in
Gloucester.

The Barnstable ARC reports that David E. Moran, W1BSG, South Dennis
has become a Silent Key.

The South Shore Hospital Amateur Radio Club has been asked to help
provide communication support for a marathon in Plymouth on November 18
to benefit the Plymouth Area Coalition Food Pantry. Contact K1JRO at

This SM visited some friendly folks at the October Mystic Valley ARG
meeting in Milton.

The Eastern MA ARRL staff will meet for its final 2012 quarterly
meeting on November 12 in Hopkinton.

Word on the grapevine: W1OD has spent quite a bit of time developing a
nifty shoulder patch design for K1USN!

Eight members of the Whitman ARC set up an Amateur Radio exhibit at the
Middleboro Fire Department’s Open House on October 14. According to
Bruce Hayden, NI1X, activities included: Morse code instruction for
kids, QSL card collecting, helping visitors to make on-air contacts,
sending radiograms, and a SKYWARN presentation. The group also
demonstrated foxhunting for project Life Saver, a wristband transmitter
for people with Alzheimer’s in conjunction with a receiver and a
directional antenna located at the Fire Station. Approximately 300-400
Middleboro residents attended the Open House event. (Thanks, Whitman
ARC Spectrum)

The Sturdy Memorial Hospital ARC will again provide communications
support for the annual North Attleboro Santa Parade on November 25,
2012. KA1IG is organizing the event for SMHARC and he’s looking for
volunteers. You can contact Bruce at ka1ig at verizon dot net, or on
the air on 447.975 or 147.195.

The Nashoba Valley ARC held its annual W1 Bureau QSL sorting party on
Oct. 22 in Pepperell.

FCC’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in WT Docket No. 12-121 seeks to
change the Amateur Radio licensing rules, especially as they concern
former licensees. If you haven’t already, be sure that you (and your
radio club) file comments on this important NPRM. Details are at
<http://tinyurl.com/95u6xro>.

A hearty thanks goes to Mike Neilsen, W1MPN for his dedicated service
as Acting RACES Officer to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Mike
resigned from the position on October 16. He is “heading to new
volunteer challenges and retirement.”

KM3T presented this past month on the 2014 World Radiosport Team
Championship festivities at meetings of the Boston ARC and the Taunton
ACG.

At the request of the Braintree Historical Society, the K1USN Radio Cub
set up and operated a portable HF and VHF station at Heritage Day in
Braintree.

A Plymouth Evacuation Drill will occur on November 7 as part of the
Plymouth Nuclear Power Plant Evacuation Plan. The exercise will involve
EOCs in the Towns of Braintree, Bridgewater and the City of Taunton.
Participants in this FEMA-graded exercise transmit formal and tactical
messages between the EOCs and the MEMA Region II Headquarters. The
145.39 Norwell machine will serve as the primary repeater for the
exercise.

Ten PART members provided communications support for the Grace Race in
Chelmsford. According to PART of Westford President Andy Stewart,
KB1OIQ, “The event was a complete success, and the race director was
very pleased with the quality of our service.g Andy said that several
people “stopped by the NCS table to visit and ask about our
activities.”

How’s this for a great fundraising idea? The Cape Ann ARA held a “two
meter repeater benefit movie night” on Oct. 20. They showed the movie
“Frequency,” starring Dennis Quaid in which a father and son solve a
murder mystery through time travel and Amateur Radio. CAARA asked for a
modest $5.00 donation per person for admission that included popcorn and
soda. Wow. You can’t get that kind of a deal in the movie theaters!

The Whitman ARC mourns the loss of long time club member and Silent Key
Walter A. Johnson, W1HA of Abington.

W1KM, W1HIS, and W1MJ were just a few of the many Eastern MA stations
operating in the CQWW SSB contest Oct. 27-28. N1SV of Townsend operated
as /VP9. The CW weekend will run Nov. 24-25.

W1NP will give a presentation and demonstration on Slow Scan TV at the
November 13 meeting of the Pilgrim Amateur Radio Club in Truro.

Dana Henrique, WA1KYU, will teach a Technician license class on
November 23-25 at Chatham Marconi Maritime Center. See
