Full Schedule of Activities at CAARA, January 28

Cape Ann ARA logoThe Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association has a full slate of activities planned for Saturday, January 28, 2017. According to CAARA’s Jon Cunningham, K1TP, the club is hosting a CW class; conducting an emergency communications drill under emergency power; and also, participating in the annual Winter Field Day festivities.

According to K1TP, “CW class is at 10 AM with Rick Maybury. Everyone is welcome.” The class is conducted at a relaxed pace and open to all–from beginner to expert.

“Winter Field Day starts at noon and will run as long as you want to operate. Make fun contacts on CW, SSB, OR CW on all bands and learn how to use the many radios available to you that are included with your membership,” adds Cunningham.

The clubhouse is located at 6 Stanwood Street in Gloucester.

Volunteers Sought for BAA 5K, April 15, 2017

Brett Smith, AB1RL writes

Volunteer registration is open for the BAA 5K! The race is the Saturday before Marathon Monday, April 15. Registration is scheduled to close on February 9, so please sign up soon to make sure we can get you on the team.

The 5K and the Marathon use the same volunteer registration system. If you’re volunteering at the Marathon, please register and request a Marathon assignment. After you’re done, please e-mail BAA volunteer coordinator Mary Miller and CC: me to request to be added to the 5K roster as well. If you can include your BAA volunteer loyalty number or registration confirmation number, that helps.

If you just want to volunteer at the 5K, go through the volunteer registration and choose “5K Hams” as your assignment preference when asked. You’ll know you’re done when you get a confirmation number.

The BAA always appreciates support from amateur radio volunteers. We wouldn’t have that great relationship if you didn’t come and put in the work to make these races possible. I hope you’ll join us to help kick off another great year of public service.

If you have questions about either event, please reply by e-mail, or phone (859) 466 5915.

Thank you, and 73,

Brett Smith, AB1RL

City of Gloucester Approves Grant for Cape Ann ARA Building Restoration

Cape Ann ARA logo Stan Stone, W4HIX writes:

Tonight in a public hearing at the Gloucester City Council, the application for historic restoration of 6 Stanwood Street by reshingling and repairing and painting the trim of the remainder of the build was unanimously approved. The value of the grant is $26,174, which is the combination of the quotes from Zac Smith (who did the front wall) for the shingling and trim repair and his brother-in-law Peter O’Neil for the painting. The council members spoke glowingly of CAARA’s contribution to Gloucester and Cape Ann.

This process took about a year between preparing a report and presenting it to the Gloucester Historical Commission to get the building deemed historically significant in order to qualify for the CPA grant (copies of the 6 Stanwood Street Historical Background of are now filed at the Cape Ann Museum and the Gloucester City Archives and will be placed on the CAARA website), preparation of the grant application (50 pages), plus a presentation at the Budget and Finance committee and tonight’s City Council meeting. Also involved was getting multiple quotes for the work. These efforts were shared by myself and Hank McCarl. Hank’s position on the Community Preservation Committee was enormously helpful and though he could not vote, he shepherded our proposal through the process. Also Hank’s contacts within the GHC and the City Council were enormously helpful.

I will be turning over the quotes to the house committee and contact information to Stefan our treasurer to schedule and monitor the work and handle the payments.

I sincerely believe that this resolves one of the biggest projects facing CAARA and its maintenance of 6 Stanwood St. Hopefully the board can come up with longer range planning of projects and acquire the funding to implement those projects to preserve and maintain one of the most important physical assets that CAARA possesses.

Framingham ARA Scholarship

Framingham ARA logoApplications are now being accepted for the annual Framingham Amateur Radio Association (FARA) Scholarship.

“The scholarship is open to any high school senior who will be attending college the next academic year, or anyone currently enrolled in a college program,” according to FARA’s Richard Cosma, AA1VI.

Applicants with a current Amateur Radio license will receive preference; however, non-licensed relatives of FARA members will also receive consideration. Membership in FARA is not required.

All applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2017. Contact Richard Cosma, AA1VI at rcosma@rcn.com or call 508-877-8241.

For QSL card request information, check QRZ.com. For photos and more information on KM1CC check the KM1CC Facebook page.

The Marconi Radio Club will operate W1AA/MSC to represent the 1901 Marconi “MSC” Shore Station Siasconset on Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts. Unfortunately, they will not be operating from the original MSC location on Nantucket Island as it is now private property and inaccessible. During the most famous sea-going disaster of the twentieth century, the Siasconset station played a critical role. Late on the night of April 14, 1912, duty operator Matt Tierney received distress signals from the sinking Titanic. Siasconset was the first mainland wireless station to receive them, and he immediately alerted all other stations of the tragedy. DX stations may QSL via the W1 Bureau, while stateside stations QSL via K1VV with a #10 business size envelope SASE.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2016

2016 has come to a close and it has been a busy and eventful year.  We had a traffic handlers picnic on a picture perfect day, and a traffic handlers table at the New England ARRL convention in Boxboro.  The Cape and Islands 2 Meter Net was re-activated with N1SYC as Net Manager, and Heavy Hitters Traffic Net increased from three to four sessions a week, adding Sunday evening thanks to Net Manager W1HAI.  The Mass Rhode Island Phone Net celebrated it’s one year anniversary under the leadership of N1LAH.  The East Mass 2 Meter Net moved to Quincy and Sharon repeaters until finally landing back home on the Boston repeater.  We lost several traffic handlers including Clyde N1BHH and Jack N1OTC who became Silent Keys, and Mike NA1XX who due to a physical condition had to discontinue his radio activities. Greg KC1CIC was officially appointed to the ARRL position of Assistant Section Traffic Manager.  K1BML was appointed a new Official Relay Station. KC1EGK and KC1ENA became new Net Control Stations.  KO4W became a new traffic handler. KC1EGK, KC1ETB and KO4W joined KC1CIC and N1IQI as digital traffic handlers
Included below is not only the December Section Traffic Report but a year end summary of all our traffic activity in 2016.  Thanks to Greg KC1CIC for compiling all the stats and thanks to all you great traffic handlers for a really good year.  73, Marcia KW1U

Girl Scout Radio Activity, Waltham 04/64 Repeater, February 3-5, 2017

John Flood, N1JAF posted on Waltham ARA list:

Greetings,

See the message below and try to work these scouts and help them earn a badge!

Hi Tim,

You are more than welcome to use our repeaters. They are open to anyone. I will post a message on our club email reflector. Good Luck!

Hello,

My name is Tim Gray (W1TMG). I will be in Waltham with the Falmouth Girl Scouts from Friday February 3 – Sunday February 5, 2017. I would like to ask permission to use your repeater to help the girls get their Radio & Wireless Technology Patch. In addition if any club members would be interested making contacts with us, we would greatly appreciate it.

Please let me know if this would be a problem.

Thank you,

Tim Gray, W1TMG

January 28 Knox County (ME) Exercise – Invitation to Participate via Winlink

Hi All,

Knox County will be having its quarterly emcomm exercise on Saturday
January 28. There are a number of internal goals for the county
ARES-RACES team but we would like to solicit the participation of other
groups by sending Winlink messages with flmsg ICS-213 attachments to the
Knox County EMA. Here is the relevant information:

1/28/2016 0800 to 1200 ET

The scenario is a statewide blizzard.

Winlink messages will be addressed to the Knox County EMA Winlink
address, KX1EMA (kx1ema@winlink.org)

The message body will include the method by which the sender accessed
the Winlink system (HF, VHF packet, telnet). While RF is preferred, the
intent is to get more groups using the Winlink Express client and the
Winlink system. Telnet (internet) is perfectly acceptable for this
exercise. All you need is an internet connected PC. No credit for
sending from a commercial email address.

Also in the message body, state the ARES/RACES team with whom you are
associated. Multiple messages from a single team are fine as long as the
sender call signs are different.

Winlink messages will include an attached flmsg ICS-213 form addressed
to KXEMA, Rockland, ME. Your ICS-213 will ask a simple question to which
the EMA will reply. Ideally the message should be from an agency person
but that's optional. You should prepare the message in advance of the
exercise. If you are not able to participate at the time of the
exercise, you may post your message the day before.

Be sure to include "TEST MESSAGE" in your message body and in the flmsg
ICS-213 attachment.

KXEMA will respond to each message using the Reply section of the ICS-213.

If you are not set up for Winlink, it's a relatively simple process.
Start by reading the Winlink section at
http://maine-ares.org/digital.htm. Then follow the link to the "RMS
Express Exercises." Flmsg may be downloaded from
http://www.w1hkj.com/files/flmsg/

Any questions on the exercise or the Winlink system, please contact me
(kb1tce@maine-ares.org or kb1tce@winlink.org)

Marathon Volunteer Registration Now Open

Per Clay Center ARC’s Facebook page:

Volunteer for the 2017 Boston Marathon Communications group!

The registration deadline is Wednesday, February 8th, 2017.

As we look back on the past year, through the stories of athleticism, triumph and community that are told at each B.A.A. race — especially the Boston Marathon — we recognize the lively spirit of Boston Athletic Association volunteers. Thank you for your singular and collective contribution towards making Patriots’ Day exceptional for 30,000 participants each and every April. We now look forward to the 121st running of the Boston Marathon, to be held on Monday, April 17th, 2017, and sincerely hope that you can join us once again as a volunteer for this iconic event.

Register:

Note: Registered volunteers must be 18 years old on the day of the race. Youth club members will be told how they can participate through club leadership at the club meetings.

We invite you to register as a volunteer for the 121st Boston Marathon. The registration deadline is Wednesday, February 8th, 2017.http://www.baa.org/…/volunteer-…/volunteer-registration.aspx

For AMATEUR RADIO, the following slots are available for Monday, April 17, 2017:

New for 2017:
All volunteers should receive a separate email from your Team Captain or group leader with registration instructions including a group name and passcode for your specific assignment. Please contact Mary Miller at mmiller@baa.org if you have not heard anything by January 9th.

Volunteer Loyalty Number:
When you register, you will need your volunteer loyalty number (if you have volunteered before, there is a link to retrieve your volunteer loyalty number if you have forgotten it) and your zip code. These items are associated with your personal volunteer history, which is primarily how we determine volunteer assignments.

We are thrilled to launch the Boston Marathon Vol of Fame highlighting volunteers who have reached the milestone of 15 or more years of service. Take a look to see who you may know! http://www.baa.org/utilities/volunteer/vol-of-fame.aspx

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2016

Winter has come, the first snow has fallen and the temperatures are plunging. Christmas music is everywhere, shops are filled with people, and the airwaves are humming with radiograms full of holiday cheer.  Have you tried this unique way of connecting with family and friends?  I’m sure they would be surprised and delighted to hear.

I’m happy to say the Boston Amateur Radio Club has been working on their repeater, and the East Mass Two Meter Traffic Net is finally back home on the 145.230 repeater where it has resided for many years.  Our many thanks to the members of BARC for all their efforts.

The November traffic stats are listed below.  If you are an ORS remember to send your SAR and PSHR reports to Greg KC1CIC.  If you are not yet an ORS (Official Relay Station) and have been handling traffic, ask Marcia KW1U about getting this ARRL field appointment.

Best wishes to all for the holiday season.
73, Marcia KW1U

Reminder: Monthly EMA ARES Net 12/5 8:30pm

…Please read below as we will be requesting new information after checkin on the net…

Hello to all…

We will be resuming our monthly ARES Net in December. The monthly ARES Net for December is Monday the 5th, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the MEMA Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

As part of our relationship with MARS and our own situational awareness gathering we will be asking for any known infrastructure issues that you are aware of. The information must either be personally observed, or obtained “over the air” via amateur radio. Items considered to be infrastructure include but are not limited to: electrical power, water, medical facilities, sanitation, communications, and transportation. Examples of failure would be: small or large area power failure, water main breaks, hospitals’ ER closed, sewage issues, TV/radio station off the air (including public safety),  interstate highway or major road closed. No known issues are just as important as reporting failures.

Additionally we are interested in relay of any weather information from airport ATIS/ASOS stations that you can directly receive via radio. These stations broadcast continuously in the 120.000 – 138.000 MHz frequency range using amplitude modulation. Information from the ATIS should include airport, temperature, altimeter (barometer), wind, precipitation, and visibility.

A list of stations with their frequencies and a map can be found at: https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/weather/asos/?state=MA

A brief introduction to ATIS can be found at: https://www.ivao.aero/training/documentation/books/PP_ADC_ATIS.pdf
A more detailed introduction to ATIS/ASOS can be found at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/brochures/ASOS-book.pdf

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!
