Head of the Charles Regatta, October 19-21, 2013

Hello everyone!!!

Well, it’s that time of year again… The Head of the Charles® Regatta is just around the corner… (63 days to be exact) Skip Farkas and I are
Co-Chairing Emergency Services this year.

I hope you are having a safe and fun summer so far. I am sending this email to you today because you either have volunteered at The Head of the
Charles® Regatta in Cambridge in the past, or for another Red Cross event throughout the years. Once again, The Head of the Charles® is partnering with the Red Cross to provide medical support throughout the regatta (this includes lifeguards, ham radio operators and first aid personnel). We are currently looking for volunteers to help staff this event. The event is Friday, October 18th, Saturday, October 19th, and Sunday, October 20th, 2013.

We are looking to staff 5 rescue boats with 1 ham radio operator and 1-2 lifeguards (on Friday) 13 rescue boats with 1 ham radio operator and 1-2
lifeguards per boat (on Saturday and Sunday).

We are also looking to staff 2 land first aid stations (on Friday) and 6-8 land first aid stations (on Saturday and Sunday). Each land station
includes 3-4 HAMs and 10-12 first aid personnel (all ranges of certifications accepted – minimum first aid AND CPR).

The hours of the regatta are as follows for the Emergency Services Committee:

Friday, October 19th:
Water Based Stations: 10am-6pm
Land Based Stations: 12pm-6pm

Saturday, October 20th:
Water Based Stations: 5am-6pm
Land Based Stations: 6am-6pm

Sunday, October 21st:
Water Based Stations: 5am-6pm
Land Based Stations: 6am-6pm

(ALL ENDING TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Due to the manner of our responsibilities, we only accept full day shirts for our volunteers.

If you are available to volunteer and can commit to a shift, please visit http://www.hocr-volunteer.org/active/volunteer/ . In the comment section,
please note what your current certifications are (HAM, Lifeguard, First Aid, First Responder, RN, EMT… etc).

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me. If you have any friends or associates (who are properly certified), and would be willing to help out, please forward this email to them. We are looking for as many volunteers as possible. This is a fun event, but requires a lot of support from Red Cross volunteers in order to make it a safe and successful weekend.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Methods and Practices Guidelines – MPG

Looking for information on message handling and net operation?  We are fortunate to have a very comprehensive resource document on the ARRL’s website called “Methods and Practices Guidelines” or “MPG”.

It was compiled with the help of very experienced traffic handlers and contains many examples of the best operating practices.  While it is lengthy and not designed as a training course, it is well indexed for finding what information you may be looking for.

Chapter 6 on digital messaging has been updated and contains information on “radio email”, a valuable tool for emergency communications and one that can be used by NTS and ARES alike.

This updated chapter, along with the entire MPG, can be found on the ARRL website and can be reached using the link below.  I encourage all traffic handlers to reference and use this information as a guide.

Chelmsford Fox Hunt, 8/18

KB1OIQ writes:

We will be having another Fox Hunt on Sunday, August 18th, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (or until the battery dies, which ever comes first).

John (KB1MGI) and I (KB1OIQ) will be hiding TWO (2) transmitters (foxes) in the town of Chelmsford. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to find one or both foxes.

Each fox will be on public land easily accessible to the public.

The frequency will be: 146.565 MHz FM

For an added challenge, both foxes will be on the same frequency! Their CW messages will be distinctly different.

When you find a fox, don’t forget to sign the log book.

Have a lot of fun, and 73,

Andy

14th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Field Day Directory Now On-line

2013 Field Day logoThe 14th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Field Day Directory contains some of the most comprehensive Field Day resource pages of its kind.

According to Bill Ricker, N1VUX, the section Field Day pages offer detailed information on individual field day club operations along with the complete event operating rules and helpful safety tips.

“Clubs which are reactivating a previous Class A or F site can confirm to the EMA Directory by simply putting their pin in at the ARRL Locator – conveniently linked from our directory. I’ll pick that up and mark them confirmed. I would appreciate an email from new clubs in Class A or F, clubs with new sites, clubs whose details on their EMA directory need updating, or who are definitely not using the site they had last year. Boston Marathon Amateur Radio Communications Support – Amateur Radio Media Stories Summary

Hello to all..

Amateur Radio Operators provided significant and highly valuable public service each year at the Boston Marathon. With the bombings that occurred at the 2013 Boston Marathon, the importance of Amateur Radio along the start line, course, finish line and net control were underscored once again. A series of stories on various Amateur Radio media outlets have emerged and below are the links to those stories:

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for May 2013

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for May is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for May is Monday May 6th, 2013, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the MEMA Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Eastern Massachusetts Hospital Net – Saturday May 4, 2013 at 10 AM

Net Control for May’s Eastern MA Hospital Net will be South Shore Hospital. The net will commence at the usual time of 10am using the following repeaters in the order listed.

Sharon 146.865 Tone 103.5
Norwood 147.210 tone 100
W.Bridgewater 146.775. DPL 244

The Net will then return to Sharon for comments and net closing.

If you’re unable to reach a specific repeater please monitor the next system in the rotation and wait for the net to arrive. If you lose contact with the rotation and are not sure where the net is currently located, South Shore Hospital will continue to monitor the Sharon Repeater during the Net. You can check with us (W1SSH) on Sharon and ask where the Net is currently located.

NET Protocol: Please wait for Net Control to ask for Check-ins. When asked to check in please use the standard net check in procedure which is:   Here is.., un-key, wait 3 seconds to check for doubling, then give your facility’s call sign, your first name, and your facility’s name. Alternatively, If your facility does not have it’s own call sign, Your call sign, Your Name, and the facility you are located at or represented.
We would like to extend an invitation to the EOC of any city or town that is served by one of our participating hospitals to join the Net. During an event it is quite likely that these locations will be activated, and the need to communicate with health care facilities via amateur radio may become a real possibility. We also extend an invitation to any RACES or ARES member to check in during the NET.

If any group or organization would like to run the Net please let us know. We would like to rotate Net Control among as many groups as possible.

Any hospital wishing to join the net but unable to do so due to a lack of equipment or personal please contact us at ssharc@gmail.com or Carl Aveni at caave@peoplepc.com for assistance in getting your location on the air.

Thanks to the generosity of their trustees, the following list of repeaters are available for us to conduct our nets and for emergency use. Only a few systems are used each month with the selection of those used made by Net Control for that month.  More systems are being added to the list on a regular basis through the generosity of their trustees.
