Reminder: Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for June 2013

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for June is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for June is Monday June 3rd, 2013, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the MEMA Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_index_by_linkstate.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

TRAFFIC REPORT FOR EAST AND WEST MASS MARCH 2013

Greetings folks.  Hope everyone is enjoying spring weather and getting those antenna projects done.  Here it is May and I realized I didn’t get the March report posted here.  As you may know I am Section Traffic Manager for both East and West Mass.  I decided to combine the reports for both sections and have a link for the West Mass folks to this page.

Participants of the East Mass Two Meter Net should be aware there have been problems with the Boston 145.230 repeater.  Club president NV1W has informed me they believe it is an antenna problem, but have been unable to get someone to the top of the Federal Reserve Building to make repairs.  Folks especially from the south of Boston have been unable to access the repeater.  Some even in the vicinity of Boston have encountered problems.  This station has a 13 element beam up 50 feet situated around 20 miles from Boston and have problems being heard.  We used to be able to use the Waltham repeater as a back up but apparently since that repeater was moved it does not have the coverage it used to have.  The Sharon repeater (146.865 PL 103.5) has good coverage, but not all are able to access that.  There has been a net session running on the Sharon repeater, and at times there are sessions running concurrently on both repeaters.  This causes some confusion, but I hope everyone will bear with us until the Boston repeater is back to it’s normal excellent coverage.

A reminder to all with HF capability, there are two section nets operating Monday through Friday: The Mass Rhode Island Phone Net on 3918 Khz at 5:30 PM, and the Mass Rhode Island CW Net (slow speed) at 7:00 PM on 3565 Khz.  These nets provide liaison to the Region Nets and we could use more help on both these nets.  See Jim N1LKJ for information on the phone net, and Marcia KW1U for information on the CW net.

If any are not submitting Station Activity Reports (SAR) or Public Service Honor Roll reports (PSHR) note information on this website.  We encourage more to report.  The PSHR requires a minimun of 70 points to be listed.  The SAR has no minimun.  Reports are sent to KW1U on the nets, on the N1XTB-4 BBS or via email at kw1u@arrl.net.

Thanks to all for your participation.  Tell another ham how much you enjoy the nets.  Let’s see if we can encourage more to participate.

73, Marcia KW1U

SECTION TRAFFIC REPORT FOR EAST MASS FEBRURY 2013

February gave us some interesting (well I was trying to be nice about it) weather.  It also gave us some interesting statistics.  The new CW net reported 20 sessions (it meets Monday through Friday), and yet EM2MN which meets daily reported only 12 sessions.  I think some of the problem may be related to reports not turned in.  This is something we can improve upon.  Perhaps a bigger problem has been the reduced power of the Boston repeater.  Folks from further away have been unable to access the repeater.  Byron K1YCQ has been running a net on the Sharon repeater and we thank Byron for that.  However not everyone can access that repeater, including our net manager KB1ENV.  Often two nets were running concurrently which has led to some confusion.  Hopefully the Boston repeater will be back up to its former robust self in the near future and we can get back to normal. Meanwhile if you can’t find activity on Boston, check 146.865.

Also noted in the stats for February are reduced net sessions for both MARIPN (3918 Khz at 5:30) and HHTN (MMRA linked repeaters at 10:00 M-W-F).  Unfortunately Jim N1LKJ, manager of MARIPN was battling respiratory problems much of the month and we missed him dearly.  Jim is feeling better now and we sure are glad to have him back.

Just a point of information:  if there is no NCS by three minutes past net time, ANYONE can assume net control.  You don’t have to be appointed, you don’t have to be experienced.  We’re all friends here.  No one can be criticized for trying, and there will no doubt be help from the peanut gallery.  Let’s try to get 100% nets run and reported.

I would also like to thank all those who turned in SAR (Station Activity Reports) and PSHR (Public Service Honor Roll) reports.  Information on these can be found on this website, and anyone is welcome and encouaged to submit either or both to me.  There are no minimums for SAR although 500 or more points will earn a BPL or Brass Pounders League award.  The PSHR however requires a minimum of 70 points to be listed, and these calls will be found in a subsequent issue of QST.

Thanks to all you fine folks for your participation in the nets.  It keeps us in practice and helps keep the nets alive.  How about originating some traffic to friends or family or other hams you have worked on the air.  Most will get a kick out of it and you will become an ace traffic handler in the process.  See you on the nets.

73, Marcia

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for December 2012

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for December is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for December is Monday December 3rd, 2012, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.
