MIT Swapfest, May 19, 2019

Swapfest (The flea at MIT) is an event to buy, sell, and swap amateur radio equipment, components, used computers, electronics, instruments and audio equipment, tools, and a plethora of other items. Includes vendors specializing in odd, rare, and antique electronics and other pieces of technology.

Swapfest occurs on the third Sunday of each month, April through October, and has been running for almost 40 years. Hosted by the MIT Radio Society, in conjunction with the MIT UHF Repeater Association, the MIT Electronics Research Society, and the Harvard Wireless Club.

The Swapfest is held at MIT’s Albany Street Garage on Albany St between Main Streets and Mass Ave in Cambridge. The gate opens for buyers at 9 am. There is an admission fee of $6. Free with an MIT or Harvard student ID.

For more information, see the online copy of our Swapfest flyer. Print out a copy of the flyer and bring it with you for a discount on the buyer’s admission: http://web.mit.edu/w1mx/www/swapfest/swapfest-2019.05.pdf

For information on (free) parking, becoming a seller, and for all other questions, visit  http://w1mx.mit.edu/flea-at-mit/

Woodstock of Amateur Radio: NEAR-Fest XXV, May 3-4, 2019

NEAR-Fest logoNEAR-Fest XXV will be held on May 3-4, 2019. It is held twice annually, spring and fall, rain or shine, at the Deerfield Fairgrounds in Deerfield New Hampshire beginning on Friday at 0900 and ending Saturday at 1500 hours.

Admission is $10. Persons under 18 and over 80 are admitted free of charge upon presentation of government-issued ID. Inside parking is available for $10 and includes a “reasonable amount of flea market selling space” for PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS selling their own personal property. Commercial vendors must register and pay applicable fees. If you are wondering if you are a “commercial vendor” you probably are. One complimentary inside commercial space is available for clubs, estates and other “non-profit organizations” on an “as available” basis.

Overnight camping, trailer and RV hookups are available. Three food vendors provide meals and snacks at reasonable prices. The Deerfield Community Church ladies serve up a breakfast that has to be consumed to be believed. Angelino’s offers hamburgers, steak, sausage submarines and other great “fair food” specialities and Patty’s Polish Kitchen menu features wonderful “Mitteleuropa” cuisine. No one goes hungry at NEAR-Fest. We are extremely proud of the high quality of food that these vendors offer our guests while they are at the ‘Fester.

NEAR-Fest typically attracts attendees from the six New England states, NY, NJ, PA, MD and other states as well as from Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada. Some attendees travel great distances; one gentleman from Los Angeles has attended fifteen events and in 2010 one radio amateur traveled from Greece to join us for the fun.

The program of activities and events at NEAR-Fest is extensive; a huge outdoor electronic flea market, three buildings full of commercial vendors, forums, technical seminars and symposia, demonstrations, exhibits, displays, licensing examinations, special events radio stations, a “jam session”, good food, fellowship, fun and general mishigoss. NEAR-Fest is the largest event of its kind in the Northeast and has once been described as the “Woodstock of Amateur Radio”.

2019 ARRL New England Division Convention, Call for Presentations

Don’t just attend Boxboro—BE A PART OF IT!

The 2019 ARRL New England Division Convention (re-branded as “Northeast HamXposition @Boxboro”) seeks fresh and exciting presentations for this year’s Convention, September 6-8, 2019. We’re looking for talks of both a technical and non-technical nature. As a Northeast HamXposition presenter, you will have the opportunity to share your subject knowledge and expertise with radio amateurs from across the Northeast, surrounding states, and Canada.

In addition to Saturday forums throughout the day, we will feature Saturday evening entertainment, workshops on Friday, and a half-day Sunday program.

If you represent a regional club or organization (e.g. YCCC, NEQRP, WRONE, MMRA, MARS, etc.) we can help facilitate open forums or closed meetings by providing you a meeting space.

Groups who wish to set up information tables should get your requests in early. While the tables are offered without charge, we ask for some volunteer time in return to assist us with ticket sales and other logistics during the convention. To register for a table, visit

To register as a presenter, please go to http://www.hamxposition.org/forums-and-classes/speaker-signup or email me if you have additional questions.

I look forward to meeting all of you at the convention.

73,

Phil Temples, K9HI
Program Chair
