Framingham ARA Scores Excellent Publicity For Ham Class

Framingham ARA logo“Since 1995, Ed Weiss has been teaching a crash course on how to become an amateur radio operator out of his love for his lifetime hobby. And this Friday, he’ll be doing it again.”

Ed Weiss, W1NXC and the Framingham Amateur Radio Association scored excellent public relations points via an article in the 3/11/05 newspaper- and on-line issues of the Framingham Tab. The article included a brief description of the upcoming FARA class along with the requirements for earning an FCC Amateur Radio license. The article also noted that Weiss was the recipient of the ARRL’s 2002 Herb S. Brier Instructor of the Year Award.

“Students have the chance to practice what they are learning because classes are held at the Framingham Radio Club room, where there is a high-frequency radio and some other equipment that allows communication with other ham radio operators,” the article states. [Full story]

Upcoming Boston ARC Public Service Events

Boston ARC logoThe Boston Amateur Radio Club is coordinating communications for a number of upcoming public service events in 2005.

“When hams engage in public service as mandated by the FCC Rules, the benefits go well beyond just following the rules. We can enjoy our hobby… and protect the health and safety of event participants,” according to Boston ARC Public Service Chair Bob Salow, WA1IDA.

“We support worthy charities,” adds Salow. “We learn to work within an organized effort. We experience the technical aspects of operating under adverse conditions. We practice communicating under emergency conditions. We can demonstrate these qualities to the communities we serve and thus promote our service for their acceptance.”

♦ Multiple Sclerosis Walk – 10 April – Charity walk in Boston and Cambridge.
♦ Blue Hill Observatory Open House – 30 April – Public presentation of ham radio in Milton.
♦ Run of the Charles – 24 April – Canoe races on the Charles River from Needham to Boston.
♦ Bikes Not Bombs – May – 15-, 25-, 62-mile bicycle tours in western and southern suburbs of Boston.
♦ Muddy-Buddy – June – Staged athletic event in Plymouth. We may support but not coordinate.
♦ Tri-Boston Triathlon – 4 September – Swim, Bike, Run race in Boston and Cambridge.

Cape Ann ARA Plans Membership Drive

Cape Ann ARA logoMembers of the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association will soon conduct a membership drive, according to CAARA president Charlie Anderson, WI1U.

“Four of the club members have started working on the local ham lists to try and refine the list to active licensed hams. We picked a total of about 10 or 12 local communities with about 600 listed hams to work with.” After they refine the lists and create a data base, the CAARA crew plan to send out a membership drive letter in hopes of attracting some new members.

Anderson adds that the group could use some additional help in going through the lists and developing a data base.

Additional information about the Cape Ann ARA can be found at their web site at http://caara.net

SEMARA Members Operate In FISTS Sprint

SEMARA Fists Sprint operation, photo #1SEMARA Fists Sprint operation, photo #2“Is it a dupe?” “What’s the call again?” “I’m getting QRMed!” All these shouts could be heard around the radio shack of the Southeastern MA Amateur Radio Association on Saturday, February 12. Armed with coffee and donuts, the SEMARA ops mounted a multi-transmitter effort, logging contacts across the US and Canada.

FISTS is the International Morse Preservation Society, offering nets, “code buddies”, a QSL bureau and merchandising of clothing sporting pro-CW messages.

Monthly ARES Net Tonight at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater System

Hello to all….

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for February is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for March is Monday March 7th, 2005, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening.

Based on last month’s net, we have made some revisions to the net process. Net Control will be advising folks that on the first round, you should check-in with your Call-Sign ONLY and then on the 2nd round, you’ll be asked for your name, location, whether you are fixed, mobile or portable, what MMRA repeater you are checked into and give any traffic, announcmenets or
comments to the net. We’re hoping this will improve the process of getting people checked into the net and make the net flow more smoothly. Please follow net control’s lead with the revised preamble.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA
Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. Thanks to all for your
continued participation!

We will have several interesting announcements for the net this evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via
email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at
http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

Robert Macedo (KD1CY)

ARES Exercise for Saturday March 12th, 2005 Cancelled/Future Exercise Updates

The ARES Exercise scheduled for Saturday March 12th, 2005 has been cancelled. The reason for the cancellation is that we have had numerous ARES and SKYWARN Activations for what has been a very active winter in Eastern Massachusetts. The latest activation on Monday Evening February 28th into Tuesday Morning March 1st had numerous Amateurs up through the night monitoring coastal flooding, reporting snowfall and reporting damage and power outages from the heavy, wet snow that fell over the region. Luckily, damage was not significant enough to result in shelter operations in the areas most affected by damage and power outages, which was Southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands.

This exercise scenario will be utilized at another time, potentially for the Fall SET in the October-November timeframe. A scenario had been drawn up for this exercise in advance and will simply need a frequency plan and some minor edits and the exercise will be fully planned. As far as further exercises, Eastern Massachusetts ARES will have a remote support role in the TOPOFF exercise that will be occurring in Connecticut the week of Monday April 4th through Friday April 8th. Most ARES personnel in the section will be asked to support that remote function in some form and further details will follow in later postings. In addition, the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section will be attempting to organize an ARESMAT to support Connecticut ARES with a team sent into Connecticut to perform the various functions Connecticut ARES has requested. Those that we select for the ARESMAT team will be done by invitation only with the invites being sent by myself or the DEC for the appropriate area contacting specific individuals to see if they are interested in supporting the ARESMAT. There shall be no self-deployments into Connecticut for TOPOFF as if you have not been properly registered and have credentials, you will not be allowed to participate and could result in serious legal consequences if you show up without going through the proper process. Also, during the week of the TOPOFF exercise, MARS will be having an exercise on Sunday April 9th and further details on that exercise will follow in later postings.

After the exercise in early April, a Statewide Hurricane Exercise will be done on the first Monday of June 2005. This is typically a MEMA Region II exercise but this year, it will be expanded to be a statewide exercise. Further details on this exercise will also follow in later postings.

This is shaping up to be another active year for Eastern Massachusetts ARES in 2005. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact your local EC/DEC or myself with those questions or feedback.

Save The K1USN Scouting Program

K1USN QSL cardHere’s an update on the future of the K1USN scouting program.

I said I would stay on as volunteer coordinator if I got 30 or more signups. I have received a grand total of 14 signups from 4 people.

So we’re almost halfway there towards saving the program.

However, I’m going to have to hear from some others if we are to save this program.

Right now I still need 1 additional volunteer for Saturday morning, March 5, and 3 additional volunteers for Saturday afternoon, March 5.

As indicated in my last message, I will only stay on as volunteer coordinator if I get a total of 30 commitments. They don’t necessarily have to be for specific dates. I have been accepting commitments from people to participate in a specific number of sessions without specifying in advance exactly which ones.

If you want to see this program continue, email your commitment to me this week.

A message from the Public Information Coordinator

Hi everyone, My name is Ron Wood W1PLW and I am the new PIC for the Ea. Ma. Section. I am replacing Jim N1IV, Who left some big shoes to fill. I thank Jim for all he has done for amateur radio in Ea. Ma.

Fist off, So I can update my records, I would like to know if your club has a PIO and who it is. I would also like to know if your club doesn’t have someone that handles Public Information for your club. If your club doesn’t currently have a PIO I encourage you to think about having someone in that position. And make public relations a permanent part of your club and activities.

The winter weather is almost over (I hope) and spring is right around the corner. Field day is not that far away. That is a great time to improve public awareness of amateur service to the community and to show and inform the public about Amateur Radio. If you need help putting a press release together I would be glad to help you with that.

If your club has an interesting speaker or is planning or has participated in a special event or activity let me know so we can get your club some PR. If you have an interesting topic and would be available to other clubs to make a presentation I would also like to know, so I can keep a list of speakers if a club should need one.

I look forward to working with the staff, clubs and hams in the area to promote Amateur Radio in Ea. Ma.
