Hello fellow ham radio community members. It is that time of the year where we start pitching for ham radio support for the annual Westford Apple Blossom Parade. This year’s parade will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 16th. The parade starts in Westford Center and ends at the Abbot School. It has been hosted by the Westford Kiwanis (https://westford.org/kiwanis/) and has a long history in town. PART has been providing comm support for many years. Parade starts at 10 AM, we usually muster around 8AM for any last minute updates and to insure adequate coverage. Parade is pretty much wrapped up around noontime. Your assignment could finish earlier.
All you need is a 2 meter FM handheld that works with the Westford 146.955 WB1GOF repeater. Some assignments are stationary at specific parade route locations, others may be to be a shadow to one of the Kiwanis Parade organizers. We are looking for 12 (minimum) to 16 hams for this event.
This is a GREAT event for a first time public service event participant.
Very laid back and calm event. It’s always fun to watch a parade!

Models continue to agree a trend that brings a period of heavy snow and strong winds to the region starting some time Sunday Evening 2/22/26 and continuing heavy at times throughout the day before tapering off late Monday Evening 2/23/26 or early Tuesday AM 2/24/26. Widespread snowfall accumulation of 12-24+ inches is possible across much of Eastern Massachusetts with isolated higher amounts possible depending on where the heaviest snow bands set up over the area
Wind speeds in the blizzard warning area are forecasted to increase to 25-35mph sustained with gusts of 50-60mph likely across much of Eastern MA with gusts of 60-70mph and possibly higher gusts to hurricane force across Southeast coastal Massachusetts. Winds of this magnitude may cause power outages along with pockets of scattered damage. Travel during the storm is not recommended. Areas of East Coastal Massachusetts could see moderate coastal flooding over several high tide cycles Monday into Tuesday Morning. While no immediate requests for support have been received, we are closely monitoring the situation for any activation of local or regional shelters.
SKYWARN activation will monitor the progress of the storm, and we appreciate any reports of measured snowfall, measured wind gusts 40 MPH, wet snow/wind damage / coastal flooding that you may have. We are creating a list of availability for ARESMAT deployment if needed for various local EOC’s, Red Cross, Salvation Army, NWS Storm Survey Teams, and hospitals as required. Keep your situational awareness level high for any updates from ARES leadership by checking your email for updates and our ARES web site at https://ema.arrl.org/ares and monitoring local SKYWARN/ARES/RACES frequencies for any updates on this developing situation.

We ask that as you contact your DEC, please send a copy of the message to hurricane@w1mv.org where multiple members of the EMA ARES Leadership will be able to access your availability.
What is ARES Stand-By mode?
ARES stand-by mode is to alert Amateurs within ARES that a mobilization is possible on a wide-scale and that some localized mobilizations are or could be taking place in isolated areas. It means to take a look at your Go-Kit and have batteries and equipment ready to go and charged up and take care of any requirements at home in case a mobilization is required and you can participate. Do NOT self-deploy. Wait for guidance from leadership for any deployment. It is an honor to be ready even if you don’t deploy for the event. Hopefully, this is just another exercise of our preparedness and capabilities. If not, the ARES leadership looks forward to working with you if any wide scale mobilization is required after the impact of this major storm to the region is fully understood.

I hope everyone had wonderful and peaceful Thanksgiving and Winter Holidays. What a rollercoaster it’s been for the past several weeks, with the Patriots in the Big Game (a tremendous effort, it sucks that we lost, but the Pats are back!!) and the crazy storms and cold and snow and icy weather. I’m happy to say my town’s snow removal effort was pretty good, and we managed to not get completely snowed in. I hope you’re in a similar situation, thawing out and staying warm and safe. I am, for sure, looking forward to Spring, even if Punxsutawney Phil says it’s many weeks away. Oh well…

* Linux and Ham Radio Class, by Andy, KB1OIQ
Andy, KB1OIQ recently finished teaching a 4-session class on “Linux and Ham Radio.” Five (5) local hams attended. They installed Xubuntu Linux followed by the “Andy’s Ham Radio Linux” software collection.
Over the 4 classes, among the many topics, students learned about generic Linux commands, graphical ways to maintain the system software, and several of the ham radio related programs.
As a class exercise, students brought their ham radios, dummy loads, and power supplies. They connected the computers and radios together and configured WSJT-X and had FT8 QSOs in the classroom using dummy loads (and one real antenna).
Andy and all his students had a great time. Andy looks forward to teaching it again if folks are interested. Follow up with Any, KB1OIQ, kb1oiq@arrl.net

Dust off your APRS gear and check in next week to the New England APRS Test Net! This is a great opportunity to figure out the APRS functions on your latest HT or other gizmo.
Why participate in the test net? During the first month, there were a number of reports of operators who tried to check in, but needed to figure out how to send a message or worse, realized they needed to update the firmware of their device. As Amateur Radio Operators, we often market ourselves folks who can send a message “when all else fails” so this is the perfect time for you to find out in a fun environment what isn’t working BEFORE you need to do something important!

Many hams use HamClock by Elwood Downey-WB0OEW. Due to Elwood’s recent death, HamClock will apparently stop working at the end of June.
Some enterprising folks have put together an updated version of HamClock, known as OpenHamClock. The version runs on Windows, Linux, or RPi and is open source. The software is housed in a GitHub repository that contains documentation. The URL for the repository is https://github.com/accius/openhamclock
I have loaded it on Windows, Linux, and RPi and found that it works well. The software is being updated regularly. It looks like a nice replacement for HamClock. A screenshot of OpenHamClock running in my shack is shown below.

In addition to instruction and refreshments, the course fee includes the text, license exam, free handheld transceiver when you pass the exam, free admission to the next FARA Fest, and a one year membership in FARA.
I hope everyone was able to dig out from the recent snow storms with no serous negative effects! Thank you to the stations that checked in and particularly those that took on Net Control Duties in January and submitted their reports! Those are very helpful in showing MEMA and the ARRL that we remain prepared and active for emergency operations in Southeastern MA.
