Monday, September 2nd YMCA Cape Ann Run
A 25km road race around Gloucester and Rockport starting at 9AM

Saturday, September 7th Cycle 4 Life Bike Ride supporting Floating Hospital for Children
25 and 50 mile bicycle tours starting in Marblehead going to Manchester by the Sea or Ipswich starting at 9AM. Both stationary and mobile operators will be needed.

Two meter repeaters will be used to support both events.

Whitman ARC at the Marshfield Fair, August 15-25, 2013

The Whitman Amateur Radio Club is currently holding its annual Marshfield Fair booth and special events station operation (NN1MF). The event runs from 8/15 through 8/25.

The club’s web site lists several frequencies on which the station will be active, on or around: 3.860, 7.260, 14.260, and 18.160.

The group will also be making contacts on the local 147.225+ (PL 67.0) repeater, and on EchoLink WA1NPO-R and IRLP Node 8691.

Chelmsford Fox Hunt, 8/18

We will be having another Fox Hunt on Sunday, August 18th, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (or until the battery dies, which ever comes first).

John (KB1MGI) and I (KB1OIQ) will be hiding TWO (2) transmitters (foxes) in the town of Chelmsford. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to find one or both foxes.

Each fox will be on public land easily accessible to the public.

The frequency will be: 146.565 MHz FM

For an added challenge, both foxes will be on the same frequency! Their CW messages will be distinctly different.

When you find a fox, don’t forget to sign the log book.

Kuss Middle School High Altitude Balloon Launch, June 19, 2013

This morning the Kuss Middle School (Fall River, MA) is conducting a high altitude balloon launch with the intent of going all the way to burst altitude. Launch will be at approximately 10:30 from Northford, CT, and projected landing will be in Mt. Hope Bay for a boat recovery. You can track the balloon two ways with SPOT, a commercial cellular based system similar to APRS, and with APRS directly, or over the Internet.

“Clubs which are reactivating a previous Class A or F site can confirm to the EMA Directory by simply putting their pin in at the ARRL Locator – conveniently linked from our directory. I’ll pick that up and mark them confirmed. I would appreciate an email from new clubs in Class A or F, clubs with new sites, clubs whose details on their EMA directory need updating, or who are definitely not using the site they had last year. “As a blizzard swept across New England February 9-10, SKYWARN was ready. The storm dumped heavy snowfall — with some areas receiving upwards of 3 feet of snow — as blizzard conditions brought hurricane force winds that created power outages and significant tree and power line damage over Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. ARRL Eastern Massachusetts Section Emergency Coordinator Rob Macedo, KD1CY, helped lead operations at WX1BOX, the Amateur Radio station at the National Weather Service office in Taunton, Massachusetts, where hams were active for 28 continuous hours.”

Please make a QSO with KM1CC to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the first wireless Transatlantic message sent from the USA to Europe on January 18, 1903. This message was from President Theodore Roosevelt to King Edward VII; it was transmitted in International Morse code by Marconi from his Wireless Station in Wellfleet- now part of Cape Cod National Seashore. KM1CC will operate from the former Coast Guard Station, Eastham, MA-USA FN 51, Barnstable County.

When: Thursday, January 17 about 1800 EST through Sunday, January 19, 2013 1500 EST

I am pleased to announce the Annual SEMARA Tailgate Flea Market on Saturday, May 11, 2013. Set-up will begin at 8:00AM and open to the all from 9:00 AM to 2:00PM.

Addmission is as follows: Vendors, $10.00 per table; general admission: $2.00; club members and children under 12 attend for free.

If we have enough participation, there will be a door prize and a raffle.

K1USN Veterans Day Operation, November 11

K1USN QSL cardThe K1USN Radio Club plans to put the K1USN station on the air on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, 2012 to honor veterans and acknowledge their service to the country.

“We have done this most years on Veterans Day and K1USN is always well received on the HF bands,” according to K1USN’s “Pi” Pugh, K1RV.

The club will operate several HF stations on the air from 9 AM until approximately 3 PM.

K1RV invites folks to come and operate, or “just to drop by for coffee on Sunday.”

The Saturday morning prior, club members will meet at Jamie’s Restaurant in Braintree, and later at K1USN for their VE exam session and to get the HF stations ready Sunday’s operation.

Venture Crew 47 Tri-District Camporee Nov. 11-13, 2012

Venture Crew 47 logoVenture Crew 47 members plan to participate in the Tri-District Camporee at Woodsom Farm in Amesbury on November 11-13, 2012. The KB1PAL crew will operate on Amateur Radio frequencies as well as FRS and GMRS during the event. Frequencies include: 147.57 simplex, 147.42 simplex, and FRS/GMRS Channels 3 and 5. They’re encouraging all participants who are licensed amateurs to bring their radios and contact Tri-District Control.

In existence since 2006, the Peabody-based Venture Crew 47 young amateurs are supported by the North Shore Radio Association. They have participated in numerous events including the Head of the Charles Regatta, HF contests, and Field Day.

Hurricane Sandy has blown by now, leaving destruction and pain behind in parts of the Eastern Massachusetts Section. Hams are known to have supported much of the preparation, duration and recovery, but how did the general public get to know this?

Such news gets to us hams and we revel in the participation (even if it is standing at alert) of fellow hams. Was the rest of the population made aware of our service?

If you know that ham activity associated with this storm was covered on TV, radio, online, in newspapers, or any of the public media, please send a message to the Section Public Information Coordinator (PIC), Bob Salow, WA1IDA, at wa1ida AT arrl DOT net. If possible, include links or copies of such publicity. If press releases had been sent (a wise move), and actually used in informing the public, make a note of this.
