K1USN Veterans Day Operation, November 11
The K1USN Radio Club plans to put the K1USN station on the air on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, 2012 to honor veterans and acknowledge their service to the country.
“We have done this most years on Veterans Day and K1USN is always well received on the HF bands,” according to K1USN’s “Pi” Pugh, K1RV.
The club will operate several HF stations on the air from 9 AM until approximately 3 PM.
K1RV invites folks to come and operate, or “just to drop by for coffee on Sunday.”
The Saturday morning prior, club members will meet at Jamie’s Restaurant in Braintree, and later at K1USN for their VE exam session and to get the HF stations ready Sunday’s operation.
Venture Crew 47 Tri-District Camporee Nov. 11-13, 2012
Venture Crew 47 members plan to participate in the Tri-District Camporee at Woodsom Farm in Amesbury on November 11-13, 2012. The KB1PAL crew will operate on Amateur Radio frequencies as well as FRS and GMRS during the event. Frequencies include: 147.57 simplex, 147.42 simplex, and FRS/GMRS Channels 3 and 5. They’re encouraging all participants who are licensed amateurs to bring their radios and contact Tri-District Control.
In existence since 2006, the Peabody-based Venture Crew 47 young amateurs are supported by the North Shore Radio Association. They have participated in numerous events including the Head of the Charles Regatta, HF contests, and Field Day.
Superstorm Sandy — Public Relations And You

Hurricane Sandy has blown by now, leaving destruction and pain behind in parts of the Eastern Massachusetts Section. Hams are known to have supported much of the preparation, duration and recovery, but how did the general public get to know this?
Such news gets to us hams and we revel in the participation (even if it is standing at alert) of fellow hams. Was the rest of the population made aware of our service?
If you know that ham activity associated with this storm was covered on TV, radio, online, in newspapers, or any of the public media, please send a message to the Section Public Information Coordinator (PIC), Bob Salow, WA1IDA, at wa1ida AT arrl DOT net. If possible, include links or copies of such publicity. If press releases had been sent (a wise move), and actually used in informing the public, make a note of this.

As we have done for many years, PART will once again conduct Pumpkin Patrol in Westford on Halloween. Many of you are veterans and others may be volunteering for the first time… whichever you are… thank you in advance for your help!
Pumpkin Patrol is Amateur Radio volunteers providing additional eyes and ears to the Town of Westford during Trick or Treating. Our purpose is to observe and report any potential safety concerns back to the PART Pumpkin Patrol Net Control Station located at the Westford Police station. Reports from our patrollers are handed off to the Westford PD dispatcher and addressed by the Town’s public safety services. Our role is ONLY to report what we see and provide input to our Town’s public safety departments.
We like to have at least 6 mobile radio operators to patrol all the neighborhoods in the town, plus one net control operator at the police station. We can still use at least three more volunteers, including the distinguished role of Net Control.
Maps and a checklist of locations to watch will be provided when you check-in for your assignment. Check-in occurs at the Westford Police station where we record your call sign, vehicle and cell phone information. You do NOT need to be a resident of the Town of Westford to volunteer; by the time we’re done, you’ll have a real feel for the town’s geography!
The town specifies that Trick-or-Treating run from 6 PM until 8 PM. We normally run the operation from 5:30 PM until 10:00 – 11:00 PM. If the weather is lousy or the streets are quiet, the net closure time will be adjusted accordingly. We try and accommodate every individual’s schedule, we have run with 2 shifts in the past… an early and a late shift. We will accept your offer to assist at any time throughout the course of the evening. If there is interest, we will unwind at the British Beer Company after the event.
We plan to use the WB1GOF 2 meter repeater, 146.955MHz (P/L 74.4), for the entire event. So all a volunteer will need is a 2m radio. If you want to ride shotgun with another ham, that can be accommodated as well.

North Attleboro Santa Parade Seeks Volunteers
The Sturdy Memorial Hospital ARC will again provide communications support for the annual North Attleboro Santa Parade on November 25, 2012.
“First, let me thank those who have already signed up for the Santa Parade. If you would like to participate, but haven’t signed up as yet, there is still plenty of time,” writes SMHARC’s Bruce Alexander, KA1IG.
This year, KA1IG intends to introduce a new twist: tracking capabilities using several of the volunteers’ Kenwood D7 handhelds and other GPRS-capable radios. “This is an idea, hopefully, which will enable the parade committee to better know where gaps are happening.”

YCCC Contest University, Oct. 9
The Yankee Clipper Contest Club will conduct a Fall 2012 Contest Univesity session on Oct. 9, 2012 from 6:30-10:30 PM at the Sturbridge Host Hotel & Conference Center in Sturbridge, MA. Directions to the center are posted on the YCCC web site.
YCCC will have top contesters on hand as “professors” to share their tips, secrets, and words of wisdom on contesting, including winning strategies.
According to the club, this will also serve as a local meeting; new members may apply for membership and join YCCC at this time.

Cape Ann ARA Assists In Recording Minor Earthquake!
Special instrumentation housed at the Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association’s clubhouse helped to detect a small earthquake situated offshore of Cape Ann on Saturday evening, September 15 according to Weston Observatory officials.
In an email to the club from Prof. John E. Ebel of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Boston College, “Weston Observatory detected a small earthquake from offshore Cape Ann late on Saturday evening 9/15 (early Sunday morning 9/16 GMT). That event was detected by the NetQuakes instrument at the CAARA site in Gloucester.”
Ebel adds, “If you go to the NetQuakes map page
Weston Observatory says this is the first recorded seismic event for the instrumentation located at CAARA.
“Robert Mims Takes Being a Ham Radio Operator Seriously”
“It’s no bologna that Robert Mims takes being a ham radio operator seriously. Mims, 66, will be among an elite group of 10 “region directors” across the country attending a three-day meeting next week in Dallas.”

Barnstable ARC Special Flea Market July 29, 2012

On Sunday, July 29th, the Barnstable Amateur Radio Club will hold a special flea market to divest itself of many items that we recently received from a Silent Key’s estate here on the Cape. There is a partial list of items found at the following address:

Location: Yarmouth Senior Center
528 Forest Road
Yarmouth, MA
Directions: Take exit 8 off of Route 6 and travel south for about 0.7 miles in southerly direction. Take a right onto Old Town House Road and travel about 0.7 miles in a westerly direction. Turn left onto Old Town House Road and go about 0.2 miles and the Senior Center will be on your left. Look for, and follow, the orange arrows with the word “BARC” on them.
The doors will open at precisely 11:00 AM. No one will be admitted after 2:30 PM and we will close no later than 3:00 PM, but we will close at any time after 1:30 PM, if there are no buyers in the building.
We will have someone listening to the 146.955 (-) ( 88.5) repeater in case you have a problem finding us. Call for K1PBO.

North Shore Bike Race, Ham Help Sought, June 24

We’re doing a bicycle event on Sunday June 24th (Field Day). I am DESPERATE for about 3 or 4 people to help out. I will probably not need people at the water stops in Newburyport, Gloucester and Beverly but more so in positions where there is some confusion along the route. I do not forsee people between Gloucester and Newburyport so it may be more around Beverly and Salem (race starts and ends in Swampscott.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you can get some help for me. I would really appreciate it.

Gillette Stadium 5K, 10K Race Amateur Support Sought, July 3, 2012

I know we get a lot of requests at this time of year, but this is like no other. We have been asked to support 5K and 10K races inside and outside Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. This is part of a big pre-Independence Day celebration to which the public is invited. The date is Tuesday, 3 July, starting (for us) about 1700.
Obviously, time is short and ham recruiting is problematic. Your assistance is needed. Please respond ASAP. A hand-held dual band radio with a good antenna and charged batteries should do the job.
The sponsor is Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Our support will be for both concurrent races starting just outside the stadium. The 5K goes around the property and up and down the various ramps. The 10K course hits the streets of the town. Both race courses finish at the 50 yard line on the field.
The stadium ramps and the streets can be hazardous so our observations and reporting are important. There will be medical monitors and water stations along the courses. Note that the start late in the day will help lower the temperature for the runners.
Families and friends are invited to watch the runners. As the sky gets darker there will be a spectacular fireworks display which can be seen from the Patriot Place areas. Free parking will be provided for hams and other volunteers.
Because of the complexities of the two courses, we have been asked to staff many positions. If you can encourage other hams and your club to volunteer, we can show this new venue our skills and help protect the runners.
Let’s make a good showing for this very special event. I will provide specific assignments and further details as we get closer to the date. Let me know if you can help on Tuesday, 3 July as soon as you can. Ask other volunteers to also send me an email. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
