“Build and Tune a UHF Antenna” Course at New England Sci-Tech

New England Sci Tech logoNew England Sci-Tech in Natick is holding an innovative course that teaches students how to build and tune a UHF (70cm), 1/4 wave vertical antenna with ground plane using simple, off-the-shelf materials and a nanoVNA.

According to their website, the project will have two goals:

  • To teach the practical use of the nanoVNA to make measurements on RF components and systems, with an emphasis on antenna measurements, and
  • To have each participant build, tune, and test a (hopefully) weather-proof ground-plane antenna suitable for base-station use at home, or for portable use in outdoor ham activities.

Cost of the activity will be minimal, just enough to cover the hardware.  Participants are asked to purchase their own nanoVNA (cost ~$60 to $90) and bring it to the session.

[The course is currently sold out, but the group intends to offer it again in the near future.]

Youth On The Air 2021 Camp Makes Successful ARISS Contact

YOTA logoFred Kemmerer, AB1OC, writes:

“I had the pleasure of serving as the ARISS contact moderator for the Youth On The Air (YOTA) 2021 Camp’s contact with the International Space Station (ISS) using Amateur Radio today. Young Hams spent the week at the Voice of America Bethany Relay Station in West Chester, OH engaging in a variety of Amateur Radio Activities. Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, was the host for YOTA 2021 and provided an excellent pre-contact program. The West Chester Amateur Radio Association partnered with YOTA 2021 Camp group to help them with YOTA 2021 activities and their ISS contact. You can view a video of the YOTA 2021 Camp’s contact with astronaut Aki Hoshide, KE5DNI, on the International Space Station (ISS) by clicking on the video above.

Working with a school or group to help young people make contact with an astronaut on the ISS using Amateur Radio is a great way to build a lasting relationship around Amateur Radio with young people and their teachers and mentors. In my role as an ARISS Mentor and Ground Station, I have had the pleasure to help with nine of these contacts around the world over the last several years. In every case, local Ham Radio clubs partnered with the school or group to provide STEM learning experiences based on Amateur Radio. Helping a school or group make contact with the astronaut on the ISS provides a memorable experience for everyone involved.

You can learn more about the ARISS contact program here or contact me at ab1oc@arrl.net.

KW2T’s Licensing Class a Great Success!

From Nashoba Valley ARC’s Signal, June 2021:

Dan [Pedtke], KW2T, received an inquiry at work from some young engineers about getting a ham radio license. He got permission from the company to offer a class, and was surprised to get 11 people signed up.

With coaching from Bruce, K1BG, he ran eight 2-hour sessions on-line, using Google Meet, and following the latest Tech license manual. They finished up last Wednesday, June 2. Through arrangement with Dan, MIT offered on-line testing sessions on June 3, 8, and 10 .

Two of his students signed up for June 3, and passed the test with flying colors (34 and 35 out of 35!) Dan informs us that a third has now taken the test and again and aced it–35 out of 35!

So far, there are three new hams in the area from the class: KC1PKB, KC1PKC, and KC1PKJ. Dan is hopeful he will get all eleven through testing over the next couple of weeks. Dan is a W5YI VE himself, and has gotten over 30 new people licensed over the years.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we all did that–the hobby would come alive!
