Volunteers Sought for Boxboro Convention, Sept. 9-11, 2016

Please forward this information to the members of your club.

The ARRL New England Convention will be held in Boxboro, MA on September 9, 10, and 11, 2016. We are looking for a large number of volunteers and are asking for your help.

Volunteers are asked to work a 2-hour shift, and will receive a voucher for a free lunch (maximum: $10 value). Jobs involve a minimum of physical activity, mostly long periods of sitting. Some jobs are outdoors, while others are indoors.

These are the times where volunteers are needed:

  • Friday: 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
  • Saturday: 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM, and also 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
  • Sunday: 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM

If you can help, please indicate the times that you are available, and if you are available to work for more than one shift.

Combined W1NAS, K1USN, N1S Special Event Stations, August 20, 2016

We’re two weeks away from our W1NAS Special Event at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. As with last year, we will be setting up in two separate locations; the Memorial Grove at the jet where Rick, KB1TEE, will be setting up as he did last year, and in the Shea Naval Aviation Museum on the left side of the Gymnasium. On Saturday, August 20th, setup time will be at 0800 with air time (hopefully) from 0900-1500.

N1S will be operating in conjunction with W1NAS from the pier at the USS Nautilus in Groton, CT.

K1USN will be assisting as they did last year but the one difference will be that W1NAS will be the unified call for both locations. We are listed in the current issue of QST Magazine so hopefully the bands will be in better shape this year than last and we can make a slew of contacts.

If anyone has any questions, please let me know asap. Thanks to all of you for your participation! And let’s hope the weather gods cooperate too!

Genesis ARS Booth at Plymouth Air Show, August 20, 2016

GARS will have a booth at the upcoming Plymouth Air Show on August 20, 2016. We have planned a low key social event, Our goal is the promote the Club and show our support for the Plymouth Aero Club. We will set up a 2 meter rig to demonstrate the clubs radio abilities.

All members are encouraged to attend this social event. Come by, support the Club, watch the show, see the airplane exhibits.

We will set up to start at 10:00 AM. The in-the-air show will be from Noon to 2:00 PM More air show details at: . Rain date is Sunday August 21, 2016. Some will meet at Kevin’s for breakfast at 8:30 AM. Kevin’s is at Village Links golf course across from airport.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JULY 2016

I hope all are having a good summer, keeping cool and hydrated.  A lot has been going on within NTS over the summer.  Here in Massachusetts traffic handlers have been busy keeping the traffic flowing.  We’ve had some newbies to message handling which is always a welcome sight.  New folks are starting to learn and actually handle messages on the nets and through the packet system as well.  Training is available and we welcome and encourage more to get involved.  See Marcia KW1U or Greg KC1CIC for more information.

I’ve been informed the Western Mass Cycle 2 net which meets on the Mt Greylock repeater has increased it’s activity from five to seven days a week.  Great work Bruce N1YCW.  The Cycle 1 net has been operational daily for some time now thanks to Obie N1QOV.  Both nets are found on 146.91 Mt Greylock repeater, Cycle 1 at 10 AM and Cycle 2 at 1 PM.  Both have also seen an increase in traffic handled and are seeing new traffic handlers as well.  Hopefully some can be encouraged to also check into the Mass Rhode Island Phone Net which serves the whole state and meets on 3978 Khz at 6 PM Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Anyone interested in CW is also welcome on the MARI CW net 3565 Khz daily at 7 PM.

As mentioned elsewhere on this page, the Cape and Islands 2 Meter Net should soon see a revival thanks to Bob N1SYC.  This net has met on the Falmouth 147.375 repeater at 7:30 PM.  Look for more information in the near future.

The annual traffic handlers’ picnic will again be held on the first Sunday in August.  Join us Sunday August 7 at the QTH of KW1U in Concord MA between 12 noon and 4 PM.   Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. Bring your own beverages and anything else you would like to share.  I suggest also bring folding lawn chairs if you have them.  I have a few for those who don’t.  I would appreciate hearing from you if you plan to attend so I can have an approximate idea of numbers.  All traffic handlers and anyone interested in traffic handling are invited.  It’s a great opportunity to meet in person the folks you hear on the air each night.  The address is 44 Raymond Rd, off Plainfield Rd which is off Route 117 which runs between Routes I 95 and I 495.  We had a good group here last year.  Hope to see you this year.

NESMC Annual Membership Meeting, Boxboro, Sept. 10, 2016

[The New England Spectrum Management Council] will be holding its 2016 annual membership meeting at the New England Division ARRL Convention (‘Boxboro!’) on September 10, 2016. This is at the Holiday Inn in Boxborough, Massachusetts. The exact room and time will be made available when we have it.

We will be holding our biannual elections at this meeting. Nominations are being accepted for the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and the eight directors (two in each ARRL section: EMA, WMA, ME, NH, and RI).

Our current secretary and treasurer have both indicated they will not be seeking re-election, so the need for nominations for these two positions is critical.

Tickets to the convention and its activities can be found on the convention website, http://www.boxboro.org. A general admission ticket is required to visit the convention exhibit area, flea market, and most forums. It will not be required if you are only attending the NESMC meeting.

While we have beautiful weather for Field Day this year, Murphy has been busy giving us more challenges.

The Quincy repeater is currently down (as of Saturday morning).  Therefore the Eastern Mass 2 Meter Net will be operating on the Sharon repeater 146.865 Mhz PL 103.5 at 8 PM Saturday evening for passing your FD NTS traffic.

For those operating VHF Pactor, N1XTB-4 is also down (as of Saturday morning).  KW1U-1 can be reached on 145.09 via BROCK and NTS traffic can be placed there directly.  It can also be accessed on HF Pactor on 3591.9 Khz center frequency.

ARLX007 ARRL Programs and Services Committee Expresses Appreciation,
Support of NTS

The ARRL Programs and Services Committee (PSC) will submit a motion
to the ARRL Board of Directors expressing appreciation for the work
and volunteer membership of the National Traffic System (NTS). The
PSC motion, submitted by ARRL Southeastern Director Doug Rehman,
K4AC, during a recent PSC meeting, thanked NTS members,
congratulated them for outstanding service, and assured them of an
ongoing ARRL public service communication role.

“As Field Day approaches, the ARRL Board’s Programs and Services
Committee wanted to recognize the continued work of the National
Traffic System, especially the dedicated rank-and-file participants
who are the lifeblood of this important ARRL program,” said Roanoke
Division Director and PSC Chair Dr Jim Boehner, N2ZZ, who seconded
Rehman’s motion. “The ARRL is committed to the NTS as a key
component in the League’s public service communications plans.”

The PSC will submit its motion of NTS support to the full ARRL Board
of Directors for consideration at the Board’s July meeting.

The resolution points out that the handling of message traffic by
early radio amateurs led to the founding and naming of the ARRL in
1914. The National Traffic Plan published in 1949 gave rise to the
NTS.

The Committee cited the “countless hours” NTS participants devote
“to operate CW, phone, and digital nets spanning both the clock and
the continent,” and the more than 200 NTS members recognized with
Public Service Honor Roll status in the most recent monthly listing.

“NTS plays a vital role in providing a messaging component for
Amateur Radio’s public service mission, including preparation and
training for emergency communications,” the resolution asserted. It
also noted that the PSC has been working to create the League’s
Second Century public service communications delivery plan, and,
while reviewing the League’s current operations over the past
several years, “the PSC has seen and has greatly appreciated the
valuable contributions of NTS members.”

Finish At The Fifty, Foxboro, July 3, 2016, Ham Help Requested

The Finish at the Fifty is a unique events on the public service calendar. It’s a combined 5K and 10K on the evening of July 3. The finish line for both races is the 50-yard line of Gillette Stadium, and there’s a free fireworks show after. Proceeds benefit the pediatric cancer foundation OneMission. It’s got a lot of energy, and particular challenges for runner safety (they go up and down the ramps of the stadium!). Given the size of the course, the medical team relies on amateur radio volunteers for communications support and to keep extra eyes on runners.

Recruiting for this event is always a challenge because of the date. A lot of people have travel plans, which I understand. Because of that, please join our team if you’re able. Chris Troyanos is the medical coordinator for this event. He would always like to have more coverage, and he would love to have our support especially.

To sign up, just write me back with your call sign, cell phone number, and t-shirt size. Plan to be there from around 4:30 to 8:30 PM. All you need is a dual band handheld and any accessories that will keep you comfortable. Further instructions will follow.

South Weymouth Road Race, 7/10, Ham Assistance Requested

Hi fellow Hams,

The South Shore Hospital Amateur Radio Club has been asked to provide communications support at a 5K race / walk on the morning of July10 at South Field in Weymouth (the former South Weymouth Navel Air Station).

This proceeds from this race will benefit a local Weymouth child who is suffering from GM-1.

We are in need of Amateur Radio volunteers to assist the SSHARC members in providing coverage along the race course. All that is needed is a handheld with a fully charged battery programmed to our club’s 2 meter repeater. We are seeking both the experienced “race volunteer” and those who would like to try their hand at public service.

If you have never volunteered for a public service event please come join us on July 10th for what will without a doubt be an emotionally rewarding experience. PRESS RELEASE – NTS SUPPORTS FEMA’S “CASCADIA RISING” EXERCISE

National Traffic System Supports FEMA’s Cascadia Rising

The ARRL’s National Traffic System debuted its new National Response Plan this past week during FEMA’s Cascadia Rising exercise.  At the invitation of FEMA’s Disaster Emergency Communications Directorate, more than forty NTS members in the U.S. and Canada demonstrated the ability to relay situational awareness from a simulated disaster area covering the States of Alaska, Idaho, Northern California, Oregon and Washington to their National Response Coordinating Center at Washington, D.C.

Methods used during this proof-of-concept demonstration project included the NTSD digital network as well as traditional radiotelephone and radiotelegraph networks.  All message traffic was transmitted and delivered over RF-only circuits using the universal radiogram format, selected for its proven network management tools and enhanced accountability standards.

The exercise proved the value of consistent, internationally adopted, standard procedures, practiced through regular traffic handling assignments.  Some observers compared NTS radiotelegraph nets to the best of military and commercial operations.  Transcontinental Corps ops displayed professionalism and skill operating CW under poor propagation conditions.  An initial review of TCC traffic shows near perfect accuracy (>99%) with the random, five character groups used for message texts.  Coast-to-coast traverse time averaged less than fifteen minutes.  One message was relayed in less than one minute.

Cascadia Rising will be the first of many exercises with FEMA designed to enhance the ability of NTS to provide efficient and reliable disaster communications services, especially vital situational awareness in the early moments of a communications failure.  NTS enjoys a culture of continual improvement and lessons learned from Cascadia Rising will be used to improve the National Response Plan and provide a basis of comparison for system performance.

17th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Field Day Directory Now On-line

The 17th Annual Eastern Massachusetts Field Day Directory contains some of the most comprehensive Field Day resource pages of its kind.

According to Bill Ricker, N1VUX, the section Field Day pages offer detailed information on individual field day club operations along with the complete event operating rules and helpful safety tips.

“Clubs which are reactivating a previous Class A or F site can confirm to the EMA Directory by simply putting their pin in at the ARRL Locator – conveniently linked from our directory. I’ll pick that up and mark them confirmed. I would appreciate an email from new clubs in Class A or F, clubs with new sites, clubs whose details on their EMA directory need updating, or who are definitely not using the site they had last year.”

“A major goal always has been helping (and encouraging) EMA Field Staff & Leadership to plan visits to nearby field day sites, as is our custom — and helping us hit as many different ones as possible.”

BAA 10K Seeks Volunteers, June 26, 2016

Volunteer registration is open for the BAA 10K on Sunday, June 26. The BAA is asking volunteers to register ASAP so event planning and logistics can go smoothly. Please feel free to spread the word with your own clubs and ham friends.

Expect this event to run from approximately 6:00 AM to noon. All you need to help out is a dual band (2m and 70cm) handheld, preferably with a gain antenna. To volunteer for the 10K, sign up with the BAA directly following the instructions below.

  1. Go to the BAA 10K volunteer site and press the “Volunteer Now” button.
  2. There are separate buttons for “Returning” and “First Time” Volunteers. If you’ve volunteered at a BAA event before, select “Returning Volunteer.” If you don’t know your BAA Volunteer Loyalty Number, use the button labeled “Retrieve Your Volunteer Loyalty Number” to look it up. If it returns a Volunteer Loyalty Number for you, fill that in where prompted.

    If the system does not provide you with a Volunteer Loyalty Number, or if you have not volunteered at a BAA event before, go through the “First Time Volunteers” button on the first page.

  3. Complete the personal information.
  4. Group status: Ham volunteers don’t need to join any group. You can answer “No” to both questions.
  5. Assignment request: Select “Ham Radio” from the top pulldown menu on the page. You are not required to make any selections on the lower menus.
  6. Complete the remainder of the application and make note of your application acknowledgment number. Seeing a acknowledgment number on the page is your indication that you have successfully completed the online application.

Harvard University’s Special Exhibitions Gallery, located at 1 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA, is featuring an exhibit that focuses on radio’s technology, culture, and history.

“Radio Contact explores those times then and now. Showcasing radio equipment from the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments, the exhibition examines the evolving technology and cultures of listening, tinkering, and broadcasting.
