In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make this second Monday of the month due to the holiday on the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

January 2012 RACES Radio Drill

Hello all Stations:

I hope you all had a terrific holiday season, and I wish you the best in 2012!

Our first radio test drill is rapidly approaching this Monday night, January 9th.  Remember that drills falling on a state holiday are automatically rescheduled for the second Monday of the month.  This will not happen again until Labor Day.

Our traditional “blizzard” season is almost upon us.  To be sure we are ready for power problems associated with these storms, we will check readiness in both repeater and simplex using ONLY NON-COMMERICIAL POWER SOURCES.  These can be battery (preferred), but can also done with auxiliary, gen-set, or green power sources.  Please be sure to report which one you are using when asked by your NCS.

The HF team will start the process, followed by region checkins on 6m.  R2 is the NCS for this portion this month.

WECT please assume the guard for all R3 calls.

I desire the widest possible dissemination on voice nets, email lists, websites, and Facebook/Twitter.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing you on Monday night!

North Shore ARES to provide LIMITED support to Peabody EMA for Firefighter Funeral Procession 12/30/11

Hello to all…

Attention all North Shore Amateurs! North Shore ARES has been contacted by the City of Peabody Emergency Management department to provide LIMITED support during the funeral procession of the fallen Peabody Firefighter being held on Friday, December 30th from 7:00am until approximately 1:00pm.

This will be a relatively easy and informal event to support. All that is required is any amateur interested in attending the event is asked to bring their HT’s along with them and tune to the 145.47 (-) 136.5 PL NS1RA Danvers Repeater. We will also attempt to monitor the 146.88 (-) 118.8 Salem repeater as well in the event we run into any issues on the Danvers frequency. As with previous events in the City of Peabody, we will be looking for the following information…

– Check-in with us to tell us you are along the funeral procession route and let us know your location.
– Check-out with us when you leave.
– Watch out for Health and Safety…if you see something that requires attention…let us know!

Net Control will be operating at an undisclosed location. Due to the nature of the event, we are unable to discuss it over the air…so please do not ask, nor discuss it on air.  Also, please dress appropriately/respectfully for the procession (and the weather) if you will be along the route.  If you have any questions about this event, please let either me or Eric-KA1NCF know and we will do our best to answer them for you.

Thanks again to all for their continued help and support of North Shore ARES.

Jim Palmer – KB1KQW

Holiday and New Years Greeting from Acting State RACES Radio Officer Mike Neilsen-W1MPN

Hello all stations:
I want to take this opportunity to update you on our efforts to realign the RACES program, and to thank you for yet another year of outstanding support to the Amateur Radio (AR) Emergency Communications (EMCOMM) effort.

As KD1CY pointed out in his message to SKYWARN, it has been an extraordinary year weather-wise, testing our systems and personal resolve. I want to take this moment to additionally thank those in ARES and RACES who contributed so much in relaying storm related damage, and bore a hand to help those agencies which provided recovery assistance.

Rapidly changing communication systems and critical budgetary changes within our state are causing important changes to be undertaken within the state and local EMCOMM organizations. Suffice to say, these clients don’t seem to need the assistance of past days but their needs today have not diminished, only changed. &n! bsp;We are working to meet that challenge. So far, we have been holding productive meetings with them to ascertain their real needs, and I’m pleased to report that good progress is being made. In the meantime, your needs and concerns are being represented by the leaders of ARES, RACES, and SKYWARN.

An effort to include more stakeholders in this effort which includes certain AR leaders of the ARC, among others, is being undertaken through the auspices of the Amateur Radio Working Group. I hope to report about these efforts in a meeting with all of you that is very similar to the old MRAS meeting, and field your questions sometime as early as February. In the meantime, please endeavor to support our efforts and training as before.
I look forward to our year working together in 2012.

NEW: Follow me on Twitter at WC1MA!

Please accept my wishes for a joyous holiday season and a happy and prosperous new year.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays to All!

Hello to all..

On behalf of the Eastern Massachusetts ARES staff, we’d like to take a moment to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holiday season! We have appreciated the support of all Amateurs who assisted in the mobilization for Irene in late August and those who stood-by to support Western Massachusetts ARES recovery efforts from the June 1st, 2011 tornado outbreak that affected Western and Central Massachusetts. We also thank all Amateur Operators whether they are in ARES or not who supported all the Public Service Events throughout the year including major events such as the Boston Marathon and the Walk for Hunger just to name a few events. We also thank all the RACES Radio Operators and Officers for their support of their local city and town emergency management as well as state emergency management. For those Amateur Operators that support SKYWARN whether they are in ARES or not, a separate holiday message has been posted via the following link:

http://www.wx1box.org/node/1701

As we move into 2012, we will be looking at doing Emergency Communications Workshops and we will have a presence at the Boxboro New England Division Amateur Radio Convention as we’ve done in past years. We will also be continuing to support hospitals and Non-Governmental Organizations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army building upon the work done in 2011. We also encourage those involved in emergency communications or those that have an interest in weather to become SKYWARN trained to support the National Weather Service for those interested.

Again, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays to all! We look forward to working with everyone during 2012 and thanks for your continued support of ARES!

A disabled woman who once spent a year at home, the Zola Center coordinator was familiar with avoiding the world. RACES Update Message from Acting Massachusetts State RACES Radio Officer Mike Neilsen-W1MPN

The following is from Acting Massachusetts State RACES Radio officer, Mike Neilsen-W1MPN:

Hello all Stations:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all again for the great support you provided your towns/cities/state government and volunteer organizations during the October storm as part of the RACES/ARES/SKYWARN/MARS teams.

In its aftermath, many of you understandably turned your attention to the impact and damage from the storm on your own and neighbor’s homes.  Consequently, we had to shelve our ACS, ARWG, and MRAS meetings temporarily.  We are now in process of rescheduling these meetings in December and January as best we can considering the holidays.  We have scheduled a leadership meeting for further exploring the ACS path for AR EMCOMM work on December 17th.  The ARWG will pick up its role to best leverage the new environment for hams.  We then want to expand the discussions to the MRAS group in January.  Additionally, a select group of the leadership will be available to speak to EMCOMM centric clubs who are interested in contributing to these discussions.

Many of you know that I place a very high value on readiness.  Our focus on system preparedness, particularly in the simplex mode has borne significant fruit for us.  Some stations are setting up relays to enable communication between those repeater dependent stations.  I applaud these efforts.  In coming months we will also focus on exercising our emergency power and antenna systems, in an effort to hone those skills.  I am also pleased to say that our nets are simultaneously getting more accustomed to passing routine and logistic traffic on resource and administrative nets.  Remember there are also several traffic passing nets meeting regularly such as the “heavy hitters”, just to name one where you can practice these skills.  When did you work with VHF/UHF SSB and HF NVIS last?

Some of you have expressed interest and/or concern that tactical traffic skills may languish.  In the late spring or early summer we will have an operational exercise for passing voice and digital traffic.  One of my long term readiness goals is the greater use of digital modes.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a wonderful thanksgiving celebration.  Please travel safely as well.

I desire the widest dissemination of this message.

Regards and 73,

Michael P. Neilsen, W1MPN

The New England Reflector Gateway System will be utilized by the NWS Taunton, Mass. and NWS Gray, Maine offices from 0000-0500 UTC and 1200-2400 UTC. The New England Gateway system is on EchoLink Conference server *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123, IRLP reflector 9123. If other NWS offices would like to join the system, they are welcome to do so and participants in SKYWARN Recognition Day can also use that system to make contact with various NWS offices.

Also, the Western Reflector will be having NWS offices calling CQ as in past years on reflector 9250 and have its gateway system on IRLP 9258/EchoLink Conference *NV-GATE* Node: 125266 open for NWS offices. Please contact Kent-W7AOR for additional information on the Western Reflector.

A few technical reminders for folks interested in making contacts with the NWS Forecast Offices on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 and New England Reflector Gateway IRLP 9123/*NEW-ENG* Echolink Node: 9123 systems:

-The system allows both EchoLink and IRLP connections. For EchoLink users, you connect to the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203 conference system. For IRLP users, you would connect to IRLP reflector 9219.

-If you are using EchoLink, the RF node or PC that you’re using must have EchoLink conferencing disabled. If it is not disabled, the system will automatically kick the node or PC off of the system.

The reason this occurs is to prevent unintentional interference from a conferencing station that may not know the node is connected somewhere else. This will keep traffic moving on the net and reduce interference considerably.

For more information on VoIP Technical Configuration Tips, please go to our web site at http://www.voipwx.net where we have a link to that information on the main menu of the web site. This announcement will also be on the web site.

We are looking forward to another fun SKYWARN Recognition Day on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP reflector 9219 system, New England Reflector Gateway system and Western Reflector system. Thanks to all for there support!

MA, NH, Seabrook Station To Conduct November 16th Siren Demonstration

Please see the following as received by MEMA Public Information Officer Peter Judge:

On Wednesday, November 16th, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the state of New Hampshire, in conjunction with Seabrook Nuclear Power Station, will conduct an audible demonstration of all 121 of the Public Alert and Notification System (PANS) sirens that are located within Seabrook Station’s 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ).  There are 27 sirens located in Massachusetts, within the communities of Amesbury, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Salisbury and West Newbury, with 94 in New Hampshire.

This demonstration is a public information endeavor designed to increase public awareness of what the sirens sound like and what to do if they are ever sounded due to a declared emergency. The siren demonstration will begin at 12:30pm, lasting from 3-5 minutes, and will be ending at approximately 12:35pm.  No public action will be necessary.

While the PANS sirens can be used to notify the public of any kind of emergency (i.e. weather, homeland security event, etc.), the purpose of this November 16th demonstration is to provide the public within the 23 Seabrook Station EPZ communities an opportunity to again hear the siren tone that would be utilized by Massachusetts and New Hampshire to alert the public of an emergency at Seabrook Station.

The demonstration is intended to complement information published annually in the Emergency Public Information Calendars for Neighbors of Seabrook Station in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  The annual emergency public information calendars advise the public that if they hear the PAN siren tone, for three to five minutes, tune to the Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio station for their state (93.7 FM, 92.5 FM, 1030 AM, 98.5 FM and 1450 AM in MA; 97.5 FM in NH) for specific information and directions.  The demonstration is intended to reinforce that message.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is the state agency responsible for coordinating federal, state, local, voluntary and private resources during emergencies and disasters in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  MEMA provides leadership to: develop plans for effective response to all hazards, disasters or threats; train emergency personnel to protect the public; provide information to the citizenry; and assist individuals, families, businesses and communities to mitigate against, prepare for, and respond to and recover from emergencies, both natural and man made. For additional information about MEMA and Preparedness, go to www.mass.gov/mema. Follow MEMA updates on Facebook and Twitter.

Sector 2B (Plymouth County) RACES Repeater Frequency Change – 145.250/145.390 Frequency Swap (& PL Change)

The following is from Jeff Lehmann-N1ZZN:

Time to reprogram your 2 meter radios and get on the air!

Last night, KC1HO and myself swapped the frequencies of the 145.250 and 145.390 repeaters.

145.390 (AC1M/R) will now be the Norwell repeater, with all of the features and links previously available on 145.250. 145.390 is a much cleaner frequency that does not suffer from the cable leakage that we have experienced in many areas on 145.250. Several months back, W1QWT moved the repeater out of his garage, and we were testing it at a lower coverage site in Norwell. We all thank W1QWT for maintaining the 39 machine for MANY years! You will now need a PL of 67.0 Hz to get into the 145.390 repeater in Norwell. The tone is on the input and output, so tone squelch can be used. The reason the tone was changed from 88.5, is because for some reason the Mt. Equinox repeater in Vermont would come through on many radios programmed with 88.5, even though their tone is 100.0… doesn’t make much sense, but 67.0 takes care of this problem.

145.390 is linked 90% of the time with 443.600, and can be accessed via EchoLink at NS1N-R and IRLP node 4320. 39 will now be the repeater used for the RACES nets on the 1st Monday of each month at 8 PM as well as the ARES net (linked with the MMRA) at 8:30. 39 will also link up with the MMRA each weeknight between 9:55 and 11 for the Heavy Hitters Traffic Net. 145.390 is also now the repeater with the IDAS digital repeater, for those of you using IDAS/NXDN, as it was previously on 145.250 the RAN is 1. For analog users, it’s a good idea to program the tone squelch so you don’t hear the digital noise.

145.250 (W1QWT/R) is now at the test site, also in Norwell, now with a PL of 77.0 in and out. Please do program tone squelch on your radios if you have it, as it will eliminate listening to all the cable leakage as you drive around. The 77.0 was chosen because 67.0 is on the output of one of the WB2BQW repeaters in NY. We have plans to move this repeater to a new, better location, TBA.

Any questions, feel free to ask, and signal reports would be appreciated! 39 will soon have an amplifier, so things will only be getting better, but it’s working well now.

So remember it’s now 145.390 (PL 67.0) in Norwell and 145.250 (PL 77.0) still in Norwell, new location TBA.

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for November 2011

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for November is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for November is Monday November 7th, 2011, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site and the repeaters that will be linked in will be through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/map.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System.
