Red Cross Backs Off On Credit Checks For Volunteers

Red Cross logoCQ Magazine Public Service Editor Bob Josuweit, WA3PZO, reports that the American Red Cross has announced changes to its controversial policy requiring background checks of all volunteers, including, in many cases, hams working through the Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Many hams were concerned about invasion of privacy, as the standard consent form granted permission not only for criminal background checks but also for credit checks and “mode of living” checks.

A spokeswoman for the Red Cross region serving Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, has confirmed the following changes in the background check policy:

* A new consent form will be developed that eliminates all references to credit checks and mode of living.

* People who signed the previous forms will not be subject to credit checks or mode of living checks. A new form will be developed for those positions requiring credit checks.

* Red Cross senior management will establish a policy to define which positions will require credit checks and how those checks will be evaluated.

WA3PZO will have additional details in his April “Public Service” column.

Eastern MA Youths Featured in Youth@HamRadio.Fun

Rebecca Rich, KB0VVTTwo youths with Eastern Massachusetts connections are mentioned in the latest issue of Youth@HamRadio.Fun, an on-line forum for young amateurs on the ARRLWeb. The forum is moderated by contributing editor Andrea Hartlage, KG4IUM.

Rebecca Rich, KB0VVT, of Raytown, Missouri, is currently a freshman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She’s shown here in a 2005 photo. Rich was the winner of the 2004 ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award.

Bryce Salmi, KB1LQC is also mentioned in Youth@HamRadio.Fun. An Amateur Extra class operator, Salmi is currently a senior at Chelmsford High School. He was instrumental in helping establish the Chelmsford High School Amateur Radio Club (KB1NAY). [See also: Chelmsford HS ARC Kicks Off School Year With Outdoor Demo”.]

KD1CY Appointed ASM

Eastern MA ARRL Section Manager Art Greenberg, K1GBX has announced the appointment of Rob Macedo, KD1CY as an Assistant Section Manager.

“I appointed KD1CY as my first appointment because of his talent, knowledge, and his ability to get the job done–fast and correctly, no matter what that job is,” writes Greenberg.

Macedo has held a number of positions within the ARRL field organization, including his current appointment as Section Emergency Coordinator. In addition, KD1CY serves as SKYWARN Coordinator for the Taunton, Massachusetts National Weather Service office.

“He is a young man with outstanding leadership, adds Greenberg. “For what I have planned for Eastern MA ARRL, I need a great second hand.”

Hosstraders “Officially QRT”

Hosstraders logoJoseph DeMaso, K1RQG writes on the “Official” Hosstraders web site:

“The October 2006 event was the last Hosstraders. After careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue hosting the event. A combination of factors have led to this difficult decision. We’ve been running Hosstraders for a third of a century, but we’ve always done it ‘our way’ and we feel that the result has been an event unique in the Amateur Radio world, certainly in New England. A number of things have been taken into account, but foremost in our mind is that we want Hosstraders to be a quality experience in every way, and not to slowly run it into the ground just for the ride. We want to take things out on a high note, while we can still be proud of our efforts.” [Full story]

Addtional VE Sessions Planned In Response to No-code

ARRL VEC logoTwo Eastern MA clubs have announced that they will hold additional Volunteer Examination sessions to help accommodate the increased demand for upgrades following the elimination of the 5 WPM code element on February 23.

The Norwood Amateur Radio Club VE team will hold an extra session on February 23, 2007, according to NARC’s Lou Harris, N1UEC.

“The session will be held in our regular testing location, the Canton Emergency Operations Center training room in the Canton Fire House, 99 Revere Street, in Canton.”

Interested persons may contact Harris at n1uec at n1uec dot org, or by calling (508) 333-5714.

The Billerica Amateur Radio Society is holding a special VE session on February 25, 2007 at the Murdoch Middle School on 42 Brick Klin Road in Chelmsford at 12 o’clock noon. Directions are listed on the club’s VE sessions page. Contact Bruce Anderson, W1LUS at w1lus at arrl dot net or call (978) 851-2886 for additional information.

PART Sponsors Radio, Photo Contests

Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford logoThe Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford is sponsoring two unique “contests” for the benefit of its members.

According to PART’s Terry Stader, KA8SCP, “In the first part–the radio contest–you must provide an exact location of the furthest point you’ve been able to use the 146.955 or 442.450 repeater.” Stader adds that one must “either have a verified conversation with someone” or generate a touch tone response on the repeater that returns the time and date. Your location should be measured by GPS coordinates, or nearest street address/intersection.

The second contest, involving photography, will be won by the person who is “furthest geographically” from the repeater site and can physically see it “without the aid of visual enhancement” and take a photo to prove it. Stader writes that “recording it with a zoom lens is acceptable.”

“Using Google Earth or other satellite/aerial views from a website are not allowed,” adds KA8SCP. “[Traveling to] mountain top locations is acceptable.”

“The contest ends when the first leaves start appearing on the trees. That should give us plenty of time to wander the country-side to make your observations. The observations must occur during the contest period.”

Contest entry deadlines will be announced when the contest period is closed and announced via e-mail and on the club’s website. The winners will be awarded PART gear decorated with the club’s new logo design.

New WMA ARRL Web Site Debutes

WMA ARRL logoThe Western MA ARRL section recently established a very attractive web site carrying news and information about section activities at a new domain address, http://wma.arrl.org.

The site is administered by Assistant Section Manager Gil Hayes, WK1H, and is powered by the same content management system software as its Eastern MA counterpart, called phpWebSite.

Congratulations to all the WMA ARRL section staff who have contributed to this fine site!

William M. Miller, K1IBR SK

Bill Miller, K1IBR, SKMembers of the Southeastern MA Amateur Radio Association were saddened to learn that club member Bill Miller, K1IBR passed away in the early morning on February 5, 2007 following a brief illness. Funeral arrangements are private.

Miller was a driving force in SEMARA for decades; in addition to his “Elmering” efforts benefiting many in his club, K1IBR also made substantial contributions to Eastern MA section activities.

According to former ARRL Section Manager Michael Neilsen, W1MPN, “Bill was a friend to ARES; he supported our efforts to hold workshops [at SEMARA]. He also participated in the hosting of several CEMARC meetings which included complimentary BBQs.”

“Bill was the wind beneath the club’s wings more than once. This ‘silent key’ will surely be missed,” writes SEMARA member and trustee Dave Dean, K1JGV. Adds SEMARA Technical Chairman Tim Smith, N1TI, “We lost a dear friend of SEMARA today.”

The club has established a tribute page to Bill Miller on its web site at http://www.semara.org/k1ibr.html.

“History of Broadcast Radio” Presentation in Andover

Jeff Demers, N1SNB writes on PART/WB1GOF:

Marc Fisher, of the Washington Post, will be speaking in Andover on Thursday, February 8, 2007 at 7:00 p.m at the Massachusetts School of Law. The subject of Fisher’s presentation will be the history of broadcast radio based on his new book Radio, Rock and the Revolution that Shaped a Generation. Fisher writes The Listener, a radio column in Post’s Sunday Arts section.

Ham operators like Todd Storz, W9DYG, were instrumental in keeping broadcast radio alive when television was rapidly expanding, according to Fisher. New technology would not wipe out an old media and radio survived, ultimately changing itself and the nation. For radio aficionados this book is a must read.

The event is free and open to the public.

For more information on the book visit: http://www.marcfisher.com.

Hello to all….

….Have updated the note to include a couple of local repeaters that will be monitored during the exercise starting around 9 AM through 11 AM as well as having EchoLink/IRLP capability monitored. See text below…

Air Force MARS has announced an exercise called Operation Deep Freeze 2007. It will take place on Saturday February 10th, 2007 from approximately 9 AM-1 or 2 PM. Its range will cover New England, the Mid-Atlantic states and the Midwest (Great Lakes Region).

Amateur Radio stations will be active on HF on 3925 KHz and 7237 KHz for the exercise. Further details can be seen at the following link:

In addition to the two local repeaters, we will also have a presence on the New England Reflector system IRLP reflector 9123, EchoLink Conference *NEW-ENG*, Node: 9123 for those who have that capability.

Cape Cod ARES and Sturdy Memorial ARES Hold Exercises in Past 2 Weeks

Hello to all….

Cape Cod and Sturdy Memorial ARES both have both held exercises in the past 2 weeks to improve their readiness. Each group having several EOC’s and hospitals playing in the exercise. Both scenarios dealt with poor conditions from an ice storm.

The Cape Cod ARES exercise was Saturday February 3rd, 2007 led by Cape Cod ARES DEC, Frank O’Laughlin-WQ1O. Over a dozen stations participated in the exercise. The Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals both had Amateur participation for the first time in recent memory. EOC’s in Falmouth and Nantucket island were activated including what George Allen-N1NBQ, Nantucket RACES Radio Offier put in a note, a once in a lifetime opportunity to utilize the $500,000 dollar Nantucket mobile communications vehicle. The Red Cross in Hyannis was also used as a base of operation.

Simplex 6 Meters, 2 Meters, Packet and a portable 440 repeater on a portable tower was utilized along with a trailer. NVIS was attempted on both 40 and 75 Meters but band conditions were too poor for it to be utilized. ARES SEC, Rob Macedo, KD1CY, observed the Cape Cod ARES exercise from Red Cross Hyannis.

The Sturdy Memorial ARES team had an exericse on Sunday January 28th, 2007. The Sturdy Memorial ARES team had an exercise on an ice storm with numerous Amateurs participating in the Attelboro, North Attleboro, and Norton area. The club station at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital was activated. Their scenario also involved an ice storm and involved support for the Sturdy Memorial hospital and their local area.

Pictures were provided by the Sturdy Memorial team. The first picture shows Sturdy Memorial ARC Emergency Coordinator, John Benson-N1FLO at the mic of the Sturdy Memorial hospital station:

The second picture shows several Amateurs at the station. From left to right is K2TGX, N1FLO, KB1DRL (foreground), W1TW hidden and N1DPY near the window. The picutre is shown below:

ARES SEC, Rob Macedo, KD1CY, participated in the exercise on the 147.195-Attleboro Repeater from home. He monitored and checked in with ARES EC John-N1FLO for any assistance they may require.

Special thanks to Frank-WQ1O and John-N1FLO for their efforts in making these exercises for their local ARES teams.
