Northeastern Wireless Club “Yagi Build” a “Fantastic Success”

Jonah Lefkoff writes on the Northeastern Wireless mailing list:

Yesterday’s workshop was a fantastic success. We built a ton of awesome tape measure yagi antennas, and learned a bit about impedance matching and soldering along the way. This Thursday we’ll be using them in a fox hunt around campus. I look forward to a fun night of searching for hidden transmitters!

Next week we begin our adventure towards developing a full PCB. It all starts with schematic capture, a critical component of the electrical design process. I hope to see you all there.

Cheers,

Welcome to Holliston siignMeg Johnson writes on the the Sci-Tech Amateur Radio Society mailing list:

What: Celebrate Holliston/300th Anniversary

Date: Saturday, September 21, 2024, Rain Date September 28, 2024.

Time: Main portion 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Setup much earlier due to parade (will verify)

Location: Goodwill Park in Holliston

Details: Celebrate Holliston is a well-attended community event, and this year will be even bigger because it’s the town’s 300th Anniversary!

Oliver (KC1TCM) and mom, Meg, are setting up a booth (10×10) to provide information and outreach about amateur radio to the broader community, and aim to spark youth interest (since Oliver is 12 yo himself) and catalyze involvement.

Current booth plans involve:

  • General information about ham radio and practical applications
  • A GOTA station (under auspices of STARS/Oliver, KC1TCM, and other licensed volunteers)—with electrical available.
  • Equipment on display such as yagi antenna and radio-related DIY projects Oliver and others have completed to spark interest

What we need help with:

  • Booth/equipment setup and troubleshooting (especially with antennae)
  • Engaging with the public at the booth
  • Packing up at the end of the day

Note: Parade starts at 9:00 AM and goes through downtown, so there may be traffic issues.

Reminder: September 9th, 2024 MEMA RACES/ACS Communications Test Net

Mike “Sparky” Leger, N1YLQ, ARES DEC – MEMA Region 2 RACES Radio Officer writes:

Hello to all,

This email is the typical monthly message to let everyone know that
Monday evening, September 9th, 2024 is our first non-holiday Monday of the month
and, as such, will be the next RACES/ACS/Preparedness Net night.

An item of note for this month is an upcoming exercise by members in conjunction with the Walpole EMA/CERT team. Walpole EMA and CERT are sponsoring an amateur radio field exercise on Sat Sep 21 from 9 AM – 2 PM at Adam’s Farm in Walpole. This exercise will be utilizing 2-Meter frequencies as well as multiple HF bands and will be testing and demonstrating various off-grid power systems for emergency communications. As I get more information on the planned frequencies, modes and times, I will be passing them along to the group.

For any operators interested in performing the duties of Net Control
Station (NCS), there are materials available to make the task fairly simple
and straight forward. The net pre-amble and role call lists are available at
http://wc1mab.org/Month.php with the role-call lists on the left column near
the bottom. If anyone is worried that they may mess up running a net, please
remember that, in many cases, a less than perfect net is WAY better than no
net at all! At the conclusion of any net, any operator that acted as Net
Control Operator is asked to please send a note to WC1MAB@gmail.com
<mailto:WC1MAB@gmail.com>  letting me know who ran the net and who checked
in so that the proper numbers can be reported to our served agencies. We
cannot always count on our normal net control operators to be available in
the event of a large scale emergency, so every RACES operator should be
prepared to act as NCO if needed when disaster and emergency strikes!

Winlink Net Instructions From Don Rolph:

*Winlink Net*

To participate:

– create a check-in form using the Winlink standard checkin form

– send via Winlink after 6 AM EST Mon. August 5th and before midnight EST August 7th
(any mode, but include mode in check-in form) to KF1D

I continue to ask that any operators who have the time, please try to
check into sector nets from near-by sectors. This will allow our Net
Control Operators to practice fielding nets with a strong check-in count and
will also serve to help practice with relays or modified sector assignments
in the event that a single repeater is out of service.

For those operators who serve as Net Control Operators, please try to
remember to send me a list of the stations and communities that check into
your nets. The numbers are reported to MEMA to show them our level of
participation. I am continuing to work on a graphical map based report to
show which parts of our section have strong coverage and which areas may
need a more targeted recruitment campaign to improve our ability to provide
back-up communications in an emergency.

I appreciate you all answering the call to help our communities remain
prepared. Thank you all for helping us keep things on track and prove that
we remain a consistent source of communication capability to the
Commonwealth. This net provides a monthly reminder to our communities and
served agencies that we stand ready with a quiet professionalism prepared to
serve as a voice to whomever needs one to get help and resources to where
they need to be.

If you know someone who would benefit from being on this list, please have
them contact me at   <mailto:WC1MAB@gmail.comWC1MAB@gmail.com and I will
add them to this distribution. Thank you all!

If anyone has any questions or comments I can be reached by e-mail or
cell phone. Thanks for being a part of our team and I look forward to
hearing back on who can participate this month.

Sincerely,

Michael Leger (N1YLQ)

Hello to all…

The September Eastern Massachusetts ARES section net will be Monday September 9th, 2024 at 830 PM on the MMRA Repeater system.

For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site detailing the repeaters that will be linked in through Hub 1:
https://mmra.org/repeaters/repeater_linking.html (Click the ARES box to see the repeaters and other systems linked)

We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. We will have several announcements for the net and if a NTS practice message is made available, we will have a NTS practice message sent over the net as we started doing those messages in these nets starting in October 2023.

USCG Auxiliary Division 5 / 12 Nets held Sunday 8 SEP 24

Joseph Fratto-K1UN – FCC General Radiotelephone Operator Writes:

The USCG Auxiliary Radio Nets for Divisions 5 / 12 were held on 8 SEP 24 at 1000 hrs
on the Roslindale repeater.

Check Ins: Radio Roslindale
Vessel 323088
Mobile 5F
Mobile 5G
Radio Wilmington

Net Control: Radio Waltham NCS

Traffic: Routine radio checks and no official traffic.

The “Auxiliary Net” was held at 1100 hrs on the MMRA Minuteman Repeater
Network. We had 15 stations checked into the net. On a training note we discussed
that September is National Preparedness Month under the EPA. We mentioned using
portable generators and the need for safety precautions.

Our two new Auxiliary Amateur Radio Operators now have their issued Ham Radio
callsigns. Ben Wechsler is KC3ZRF and he is located in Kennebunkport Maine.
Jane Eastman KC1VHN was on the “Auxiliary Net” this morning and made a lot of
friends on the radio net.

Also on the MMRA Auxiliary Net we mentioned that we are all assigned to ESF #2.
This is the official ICS Incident Command Structure classification for Radio Ops.
ESF #2 stands for Emergency Support Function #2. ESF #2 comes under the broad
heading of Logistics Command.

At the request of Department of Homeland Security ESF #2 personel. The FCC Federal
Communications Commission approved the 60 meter five channels. These five channels
allow Ham radio operators to communicate with authorized federal stations at any time.
Federal stations come up and guard these five channels during emergencies and drills.
Hams are secondary users of these channels and are allowed to use them as they please.

During emergencies or in times of need stations with HF capability are urged to monitor
the 5 Mhz 60 meter channels for any emergency traffic.

Also please note that there is a USAF Military Auxiliary Radio Service MARS VHF Radio
Net held every Friday Evening at 1930 Hrs. This net is on the USAF MARS VHF Radio
Net on the MARS VHF Linked radio network. You have to be an authorized MARS Radio
operator to participate. The MARS network is very much alive on VHF and stations from
across the Commonwealth and surrounding states routinely participate.

Amateur Radio Communications Support Opportunity: Head Of The Charles 2024

Ethan, KC1OIP, writes on the Boston ARC email list:

It’s that time of year again! The Head Of The Charles is looking for Amateur Radio (and lifeguards, first aid and bike team) volunteers for 2024. Please see below.

Volunteer registration for the 2024 Head of the Charles Regatta is opening today at 3pm! The PIN across all of our volunteer teams is 0911. While registration is opening early for returning volunteers, I’d ask you to spread the link and associated information to anyone you know that may be interested in helping! We’re always looking for enthusiastic people to join the team and help us support an incredible event!

This is the link to volunteer registration through Regatta Central:

https://volunteer.regattacentral.com/

Below are a few answers to frequently asked questions:

Q: What are the dates for HOCR 2024?
A: Events will be taking place on the weekend of October 18th to October 20th, 2024.

Q: What are the shift times for each team assignment?
A: Reporting and Securing Times are as follows:

0600 – 1800: Lifeguards and Ham Radio Operators on Safety Launches
0700 – 1800: Land-Based Ham Radio Operators, First Aid Teams, Bike Teams

These timeframes are rough, and we’re allowing for operational hang-ups that may add time to the day when estimating.

Q: When will we hear about assignments?
A: We start working on assignments as soon as we receive volunteer applications. However, we won’t release an assignment list until it’s reasonably full. You likely won’t see anything like that until the end of September or beginning of October. You will receive an email when any action is taken on your application, whether it’s accepted, declined, or put on hold. If you have any questions about the status of your application, please direct them to emergencyservices@hocr.org.

Q: When will I hear from you again?
A: One of our goals is to improve communication with the volunteer contingent every year, and 2024 is no exception. In the next few weeks, the Race Operations team (which includes all of the Emergency Services committee members) will begin meeting regularly. As deadlines for volunteer registration and certification submission approach, you’ll be hearing from us more frequently. In the interim, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact that committee at emergencyservices@hocr.org. This inbox is monitored by several committee members and we’re usually very quick to respond.

Q: What about the volunteer premiums?!
A: I have no information about volunteer premiums for 2024, aside from the fact that we are as curious as you are!

If you have any questions that aren’t listed here, please reply to this message and ask! We’ll be glad to answer them to the best of our collective ability. We’re looking forward to working with you all again soon!

Best,

The HOCR Emergency Services Committee
emergencyservices@hocr.org

Hope to see you in October!

Ethan, KC1OIP

August 2024 Section Update

Welcome to the August 2024 EMA Section Update! This update is also being published to the EMA Section and NE Division websites. Please spread the word.

It’s still summer. The weather – at least here on the Cape – has been crazy variable, from hot-humid-swampy to nice-cool-dry, and everything in between. I hope you’re all taking it easy, staying cool, keeping hydrated, and enjoying the nice days. The population of our Cape Cod communities continues at 3-4 times off-season. Many businesses make all their profits for the year, and that is to be respected. On the bright side, listening to the police/rescue/fire scanner gives us countless “stupid human tricks” stories. This too shall end!

* HamXpo is Coming!

Last call, I promise! Mark the dates, August 22-25, 2024! The 2024 edition of HamXposition is coming, and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. Several top-tier amateur radio vendors recently committed to the show. And the lineup of technical talks/seminars/workshops exceeds Hamvention (Dayton) in terms of breadth and depth of topics. Attend an in-person SKYWARN Spotter class! Attend the in-person Mini Contest University being held Friday! Bring someone to review for their Tech license in a day! I want to have an eyeball QSO with you there, including the Section Town Hall (parallel sessions for most of the New England sections)! Full details at https://hamxposition.org/

* K1USN SST

CW ops and contesters from around the world are invited to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the K1USN weekly Slow Speed Contest (SST) by participating in a new event, the K1USN SST OPEN (SSO) to be held annually starting on Friday, September 13 from 2000-2359Z.

From its inception in September 2020, the twice-weekly SST has encouraged CW newcomers to join with experienced ops in a relaxed contest at speeds less than 20 WPM. Contest sponsors strongly urge all participants to operate at 12 WPM or less to provide new CW ops with a comfortable “on ramp” to CW operating and contesting.

See https://ema.arrl.org/2024/08/14/k1usn-sst-open-september-13-2024/ for more details.

* New Version of KB1OIQ’s Linux Distro Released

Version 26 is now the default version when the Download button is clicked.

Andy is hosting a hands-on installation workshop at HamXposition on Fri Aug 23 at 1300 EDT. If you simply want to learn more about Andy’s Ham Linux distribution, he’s giving a seminar at 1100 EDT on Sat Aug 24. Check it out!

* Amateur Radio Communications Request for “Cycle for Shelter” in Haverhill

“This year’s Cycle for Shelter will take place on Sunday September 15th.  The start and finish is at the Northern Essex Community College sports complex, Haverhill, Mass. There are (4) routes planned, a 100-mile, 62-mile, 35 mile & 15 miles long. Most will overlap each other. The final routes are still being worked out but will run through similar areas as in years past. The start times for each route vary, starting as early as 7:30 AM and the event closes at 4:00 pm. Some routes will take as little as 3 hours to complete where the longest would take a full day.

“We are looking to fill the positions of route support in such that there would be at least (1) vehicles per route. All route support vehicles will be offered equipment and instruction on the day of the event.

“We are also in need of Amateur Radio Operators at seven different rest stops in: Boxford, Georgetown Groveland, Topsfield, North Hampton, Kensington and Amesbury. The open close times of these stops is being calculated but should not be longer than four hours. Bike marshals are also needed for the 15-mile route which is local to the start/finish.”

 See https://ema.arrl.org/2024/08/14/amateur-radio-communications-request-cycle-for-shelter-haverhill-september-15-2024/ for more details.

* StratoScience Lab Balloons Deployed from New England Sci-Tech on Wed Aug 14

Seth Kendall, KC1PZY, writes on the New England Sci-Tech ARS mailing list:

Just wanted to let you all know we are aiming to launch two separate StratoScience Lab balloons THIS WEDNESDAY 8/14 from NEST.  That means we’ll be filling up and releasing the balloon from the NEST parking lot.  The exact time is not nailed down yet, but release will most likely be sometime between 10am and 2pm.  We will have a HamXposition presentation detailing all the projects.

* Recruiting a New Section Youth Coordinator

I reported last month that our Section Youth Coordinator, Paul K1YUB, had to step down from his position. I’m still looking for his replacement. The SYC requirement and job description is at https://www.arrl.org/section-youth-coordinator  If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact me at n1ilz@arrl.org  – I’ll appreciate it greatly!

For more information, visit https://www.harborstage.org/three-dots.html.

* N1ILZ for a Final

Stay safe and cool out there!  Summer is (still) here, the traffic is (still) crazy, and the weather forecasters are predicting a hot summer. There’s still plenty of summer fun to be had, including work on all those outdoor projects pent up from the past winter. Especially including antenna projects, amirite?!

Please, PLEASE join us at HamXposition! I will be hosting an Eastern MA ARRL Town Hall on Saturday at 1600 EDT. Here’s your chance to throw rotten tomatoes at your Section Manager and tell me what you really think!

Can you write a paragraph or two about what you’re up to, so I can publish it in the Section Update? Let me know via email at n1ilz@arrl.org!

Amateur Radio Communications Request, Cycle for Shelter, Haverhill, September 15, 2024

Ethan Hansen, KC1OIP, writes on the Boston ARC mailing list:

Hi all, Cycle for Shelter is looking for amateur radio operators for this year’s event. Please see the information from Ross Chapman below.
This year’s event will take place on Sunday September 15th.  The start and finish  is again at the Northern Essex Community College sports complex, Haverhill, Mass.

There are (4) routes planned, a 100 mile, 62 mile, 35 mile & 15 miles long. Most will overlap each other. The final routes are still being worked out but will run through similar areas as in years past. The start times for each route vary, starting as early as 7:30 AM and the event closes at 4:00 pm. Some routes will take as little as 3 hours to complete where the longest would take a full day.

We are looking to fill the positions of route support in such that there would be at least (1) vehicles per route. All route support vehicles will be offered equipment and instruction on the day of the event.
We are also in need of Amateur Radio Operators at (7) different rest stops. Of the seven (7) rest stops locations again are in: Boxford, Georgetown Groveland, Topsfield, North Hampton, Kensington and Amesbury. The open close times of these stops is being calculated but should not be longer than (4) hours. Bike marshals are also needed for the 15 mile route which is local to the start/finish.

If you have time available to help again with this event, it would be greatly appreciated. All are welcome at the finish for food and the celebration of the days event.

Please RSVP regrets and/or confirmation that you will be able to help. (Even if I have already talked with you)

If you know of anyone who would be willing to help, please forward this note to them and have them contact me.

Regards,

K1USN SST Open, September 13, 2024

K1USN SST logoFrom K1USN Happenings, August 13, 2024:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CW ops and contesters from around the world are invited to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the K1USN weekly Slow Speed Contest (SST) by participating in a new event, the K1USN SST OPEN (SSO) to be held annually starting on Friday, September 13 from 2000-2359Z.

From its inception in September 2020, the twice-weekly SST has encouraged CW newcomers to join with experienced ops in a relaxed contest at speeds less than 20WPM. Contest sponsors strongly urge all participants to operate at 12WPM or less to provide new CW ops with a comfortable “on ramp” to CW operating and contesting.

The same speed rules will apply in the Slow Speed Open with the hope that every station that wishes to jump in will be welcome at a pace comfortable for them.

A CW Speed multiplier has been added to the score calculation as an incentive to go slow, (via the 3830scores.com submittal form). This speed multiplier is based on your fastest sending speed used during the contest.

Certificates with score and claimed maximum operating speed (honor system) will be available to all entrants.

RULES:

DATE and TIME: September 13 2000-2359 UTC

Goal: Work as many stations as possible during the four hours on multiple HF bands (160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10 meters).  Exchange: Name and State/Province (Non US-VE =DX) Score =Total Points x CW Speed Multiplier x Total State/Province/DX Multipliers

Stations may be worked once per band.

50 point Bonus for working K1USN once per band.

Post log summary on www.3830scores.com Do NOT mail logs to K1USN
