Tom Frenaye, K1KI writes on the YCCC reflector:

Will you be active this year? Sure would like to hear from you if so. There are lots of new contesters that get their start in state QSO parties, and a good number of others who chase counties and enjoy focusing on working one part of the world. From New England, it’s a lot of fun to be the target – rates are usually quite good.

Basic rules: Date: First full weekend of May (May 2-3, 2015)

Contest Period: 2000Z Saturday until 0500Z Sunday (4pm EDT Saturday until 1am EDT Sunday) and 1300Z Sunday until 2400Z Sunday (9am EDT Sunday until 8pm EDT Sunday).

Categories: Single-operator high power, low power(150w or less) and QRP(5w or less) categories, plus multi-operator, single transmitter. Same four categories for mobiles.

Contest Exchange: Send signal report and state/province (DX stations send signal report and “DX”). New England stations send signal report, county and state. You can find the full rules at http://neqp.org/rules.html .

Please let us know if you’ll be active by sending a brief email to info@neqp.org We’ll update the Reserve Your County page with your call if you let us know. http://www.neqp.org/ryc.html.

APRIL 2015 SECTION NEWS

Welcome to the April EMA section news. I start as usual with updates
from your ARRL section staff.

Paul Laconto, W1NP, honored as the first EMA recipient of the new ARRL
Amateur Radio Service to Scouting Award.

“After retiring to the Cape, Paul joined the Cape Cod & Islands
Council in 2006 when he became a committee member of Troop 76 in
Harwich and later the District Committee. With him he brought exposure
to Amateur Ham Radio. For the last 7 years with the help of the
Barnstable Amateur Radio Club, Paul has been instrumental in organizing
JOTA “Jamboree on the Air” and starting an Amateur Radio Club 73 at
the Lighthouse Charter School for middle school. Many of our boy scouts
have received their Radio and the 2010 historical Signaling MB because
of his efforts.” (Thanks to Elaine Mason, KB1VAJ, for this
information).

The ARRL recognizes actively involved Scouting leaders who make a
significant contribution to providing Scouts with a memorable and
valuable Amateur Radio experience. Nominations should be sent to your
Section Manager. Full details including how to nominate someone are
found on the ARRL web site at
<http://www.arrl.org/news/boy-scouts-recognize-arrl-amateur-radio-service-to-scouting-award>.

This month, I continued with my section travels by speaking to the
members of the Framingham Amateur Radio Association at their monthly
meeting on April 2 at the Framingham Police Department. The visit was
arranged before I assumed the section duties, and afforded a wonderful
opportunity to meet with another excellent Eastern Massachusetts radio
club.

Bo Budinger, WA1QYM, Affiliated Club Coordinator (ACC) has a note for
all EMA ARRL Affiliated Clubs. It is important to have the information
about your club on the ARRL web site updated every year. Once a club is
affiliated with the ARRL it is always affiliated. A club does run the
risk of becoming non-active and have its listing removed from the ARRL
web page listing of Affiliated Clubs if it is not updated every year.
Bo reminds us this is a simple procedure and only takes a few minutes.
Log on to the ARRL web site and go to Updating Your Club Record at:
<http://www.arrl.org/club-update>. Follow the instructions under:
“update your club information”. It is as simple as that.

Marcia Forde, KW1U, Section Traffic Manager (STM) sadly reports that
Dave Spaulding, N1LUM, became a silent key on March 3, 2015. Dave was
Net Manager for the Heavy Hitters Traffic Net (HHTN).

Brass Pounders League (BPL).
Marcia Forde, KW1U, reports the following EMA amateurs qualified for
the ARRL BPL and will be recognized in QST: KW1U

ARRL Public Service Honor Roll (PSHR).
Marcia Forde, KW1U, reports the following EMA amateurs qualified for

by a VE session conducted by N1UEC and his crew from the Canton/Norwood
area. PAWA is very pleased to report that all four students who
completed the class also passed the Extra Class exams. The PAWA is now
considering a General mentoring class for next winter. Dates and times
will be announced this fall. Congratulations to John, N1OTY, and the
gang at PAWA for a fine accomplishment.

The Quannapowitt Radio Association (QRA) had an excellent talk from
Steve Telsey, N1BDA, on amateur radio traffic handling. QRA is
encouraging all of their members to become ELMERS in what they call a

25. The selected kit is a TECSUN 2P3 super-heterodyne AM radio kit.

Achin, WA1ZCQ, talk about QRP low power operating. The next meeting on
May 16 will have as their guest speaker, Mr. Frank Ventura from the
Mass Commission for the Blind with a talk on keeping IT systems up and
running.

And finally…

During the past several months, many dedicated amateurs in our region
devoted many hours to supporting Skywarn, ARES, and section emergency
communications during this record setting winter. Clubs faced many
challenges too in just being able to hold meetings. We all owe these
fine amateur radio operators a sincere thank-you for a job well done.

April is finally here. I don’t know about you, but after this
winter, that alone is enough for me at least!

See you next month.

Tom, K1TW

HEAVY HITTERS TRAFFIC NET (HHTN)

Due to the passing of Dave Spalding N1LUM, HHTN currently has no manager and only one NCS who has been running the net on Friday evenings. Scott, N1SGB has faithfully been covering Friday evenings for some time and would like to see the net continue and hopefully rebuild.  Until further notice, this net will run only on Friday evenings on the MinuteMan Repeater Association linked repeaters at 10 PM.  If we can rebuild the net, we will increase the sessions accordingly.  HHTN has been in existance for longer than I can remember (and that is a long time).  It would be a shame to see it disappear altogether.  Please support Scott and check in on Fridays.  Hope to see you there.

Amended: Limited Volunteer Positions Still Available for Boston Marathon, April 20, 2015

Mark Richards, K1MGY writes on PART list:

The Boston Marathon is one of the most visible events for Amateur Radio in New England, and perhaps the country. As of today there are 276 of your fellow Amateur Radio licensees volunteering their time and skills to keep the medical logistics and reporting operations working at top efficiency to support the 30,000 runners expected in 2015.

However, 276 radio operators is just barely sufficient — we’d like a few more. If you are interested and available for a full day of high-value public service, please let me know. If you are possibly interested but have some questions before deciding, please ask me those questions; I’ll do my best to get you answers.

The official BAA volunteer registration deadline has long passed. The BAA is working with us to get a few more hams into the system. This window won’t be open for long, so please do not hesitate too long if you are going to consider this request.

———-

04/04/15:

The BAA Boston Marathon needs three (3) additional Amateur Radio communications volunteers for the COURSE segment of the event.  These openings are at the Net Control Operations Centre, and in one or more Medical Stations.

The Boston Marathon is one of the most visible events for Amateur Radio in New England, and perhaps the country.  As of today there are 273 of your fellow Amateur Radio licensees volunteering their time and skills to keep the medical logistics and reporting operations working at top efficiency to support the 30,000 runners expected in 2015.

However, 273 radio operators is just barely sufficient to staff our comprehensive communications plan — we’d like a few more.  If you are interested and available for a full day of high-value public service, please let me know.  If you are possibly

DAVID SPALDING N1LUM SK

It is with great sadness that I relay to you that our Dave Spalding N1LUM suffered a heart attack and became a silent key on March 3, 2015.

Dave was an active participant on the two meter traffic nets, serving as net control and message relay station, as well as manager of Heavy Hitters Traffic Net (HHTN).  He was also active on VHF packet handling messages via that means as well.  Dave was 55 years old. It was a great shock, and he will be sorely missed.  May he rest in peace. Below is a link to his obituary.

We extend an invitation to the EOC of any city or town that is served by one of our participating hospitals to join the Net. We also extend an invitation to any RACES or ARES member to check in during the NET.

We are always looking for more groups or organizations to take Net Control duties. If you are interested please let us know. Our goal is to rotate Net Control practice and the experience among as many groups as possible.

Any hospital wishing to join the net that needs assistance with equipment or personnel should contact us at ssharc@gmail.com. We can assist you with getting your location on the air.

We thank the repeater trustees for their generosity in allowing us to conduct the monthly nets and the use of their systems in an actual event. The following list of repeaters are available for our use. On-line Technician Course Offered

Chris Johnson, N1IR has announced the launch of a no-cost, online Technician Class course. It can be found at http://www.n1ir.com/p/n1ir-tech-course.html. According to N1IR, “In as little as 20 minutes a day for 20 days, you can pass the FCC Technician Element 2 Examination.”

“Each day there is a two-part video series,” says Johnson, who serves as Education Officer for the Genesis Amateur Radio Society. “The first part is on specific sub-element theory and the second video covers all the questions and answers of the sub-element you are studying for that day. After watching the videos for that day all the student have homework assignment for the day and quiz for that days class. An on-line webinar will be available to ask questions and offer guidance for the course. A list of webinar dates will be posted on top of the N1IR tech course page.”

Questions about the course can be directed to Johnson at n1ir@arrl.net.

MS Walk Boston Volunteers Sought

Brett Smith, AB1RL writes:

Throughout the year, the National MS Society organizes walks to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research and patient advocacy. The Boston-area walks have long relied on hams to help ensure everyone’s safety. This year’s MS Walk Boston is on Sunday, April 12th. It starts at Boston University’s Nickerson Field, Harry Agganis Way in Boston, and runs along the Charles River. Volunteers will check in at 8:00 AM, and stay until the early afternoon.

Rick Savage, KB1LYJ, is organizing the hams for this event. To volunteer, please write him with the following information:

  • Your call sign, full name, and name you prefer on the air
  • Contact information: your e-mail address, postal address, and phone numbers where you can be reached (cell, home, office)
  • Your shirt size
  • The transmit band(s) of your radio(s), and other equipment you could bring
  • Do you have any needs or requests we should consider when making your assignment?

Rick can also answer any questions you have about the event.

Thanks for volunteering, and 73,

Brett Smith, AB1RL
Public Service Coordinator, Boston Amateur Radio Club

ARRL Warns Experimental Licensee to Avoid Interference to HF Ham Activity

ARRL flag“The ARRL has asked a Massachusetts company that plans to conduct experimental transmissions over wide portions of the HF spectrum either to avoid Amateur Radio allocations or to announce the times and frequencies of their transmissions in advance. The FCC last fall granted MITRE Corporation of Bedford, Massachusetts, a 2-year Part 5 Experimental License, WH2XCI, to operate 21 transmitters at 10 fixed New York and Massachusetts sites. MITRE plans to test wideband HF communication techniques on a variety of bands between 2.5 MHz and 16 MHz.” [Full story]

Eastern Massachusetts ARES Stand-By Beginning at 6 PM EST Monday 1/26/15 Through Wednesday Evening

Hello to all…

***EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS ARES PLACED ON STAND-BY FOR ALL AREAS EFFECTIVE 6:00PM MONDAY, JANUARY 26 THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING DUE TO POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM FORECASTED BLIZZARD***
***BLIZZARD WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR EASTERN MA COAST AND CAPE COD/MARTHAS VINEYARD FROM 7:00PM MONDAY THOUGH 1:00AM WEDNESDAY.  WINTER STORM WARNINGS/HIGH WIND WARNINGS UP FOR NANTUCKET***
***COASTAL FLOOD WARNINGS IN EFFECT FOR EASTERN MA COASTLINE INCLUDING CAPE AND ISLANDS FOR THE TUESDAY MORNING HIGH TIDE.  POCKETS OF MODERATE-MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING POSSIBLE.
***WIND GUSTS TO HURRICANE FORCE POSSIBLE ALONG THE IMMEDIATE COAST***
***SKYWARN OPS AT NWS-TAUNTON TO COMMENCE AT 6:00PM MONDAY***

Models have begun to consolidate on a trend which brings a period of heavy snow and strong winds to the region starting late tomorrow afternoon/evening and continuing through Tuesday.  Snowfall accumulation of 24-30 inches is possible across much of Eastern Massachusetts with 10-18 inches possible across the Cape/Islands.  Isolated higher amounts are possible depending on where the heaviest snow band set up over the area.

Wind speeds in the blizzard warning area are forecasted to increase to 25-35mph sustained with gusts possibly reaching hurricane force (60-70mph), especially along the immediate coast per the latest forecast.  Winds of this magnitude combined with the weight of the snowfall may cause power outages along with pockets of scattered damage.  Travel during the storm is not recommended.  For further meteorological updates, including the latest Blizzard Coordination Message, please see the NWS Taunton SKYWARN home page at http://www.wx1box.org

A coastal flood warning is also in effect for pockets of moderate to potentially major coastal flooding along the Eastern MA coastline.  High tide is anticipated at 5am Tuesday morning, and another high tide at 5pm Tuesday evening.

Preparations should be completed by early this evening based on the latest forecasts, and again to repeat, travel is not recommended once the storm has begun.

Storm pictures and video of snowfall measurements, wind and coastal damage will be very helpful for situational awareness/disaster intelligence purposes benefiting the National Weather Service, Emergency Management, the media, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). They can be sent via the WX1BOX Facebook, Twitter feed, or to pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter for the pictures unless otherwise noted. Pictures can be sent during and after the storm. Please do not compromise safety to get these pictures and video.

In advance of the storm, please advise your local EC/DEC/ADEC of your availability to support a potential deployment anytime over the weekend. We are creating a list of availability for ARESMAT deployment if needed for various local EOC’s, Red Cross, Salvation Army, NWS Storm Survey Teams, and hospitals as required. Keep your situational awareness level high for any updates from ARES leadership by checking your email for updates and our ARES web site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org and monitoring local SKYWARN/ARES/RACES frequencies for any updates on this developing situation.

When sending your availability, please send the following: Name, Call-sign, License Class, Capability (HF / VHF / UHF), Availability, and any other special notes we should be aware of. Also, please let us know if you can do an ARESMAT to another part of the Eastern Massachusetts section (specifically East Coastal and Southeast Mass/Cape Cod) as this area looks to be particularly hardest hit by this anticipated blizzard. We ask that as you contact your DEC, please send a copy of the message to blizzard@nsradio.org where multiple members of the EMA ARES Leadership will be able to access your availability.

What is ARES Stand-By mode?

ARES stand-by mode is to alert Amateurs within ARES that a mobilization is possible on a wide-scale and that some localized mobilizations are or could be taking place in isolated areas. It means to take a look at your Go-Kit and have batteries and equipment ready to go and charged up and take care of any requirements at home in case a mobilization is required and you can participate. Do NOT self-deploy. Wait for guidance from leadership for any deployment. It is an honor to be ready even if you don’t deploy for the event. Hopefully, this is just another exercise of our preparedness and capabilities. If not, the ARES leadership looks forward to working with you if any wide scale mobilization is required after the impact of this major storm to the region is fully understood.

Thanks for your continued support of Eastern Massachusetts ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

Steve Telsey – N1BDA

“QNI” – AN INDEPENDENT NEWSLETTER DEDICATED TO PROMOTING NTS AND GENUINE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS PREPAREDNESS

“QNI” is an independent newsletter published by James Wades WB8SIW, who has worked as a professional telegrapher, and who has had a wealth of experience in message handling and emergency communications.  He has dedicated many years to NTS.  In September 2012 he began the “QNI” newsletter at the request of a group of traffic handlers and has published it approximately quarterly ever since.  This newsletter is dedicated to promoting NTS and genuine emergency communications preparedness.  In addition to NTS he has included very informative articles on NTSD, the digital side of NTS as well as “radio email”, a valuable tool for emergency communication.

I am including here a link to the Texas NTS Net Home Page http://www.k6jt.com/ which contains archives of all these newsletters.  When accessing this website just scroll down a short ways to find links to all the issues.  I encourage all readers to check out this very interesting and informative newsletter.  You may also find other articles of interest on this website which is maintained by W6JT the Central Area Staff Chair. If you wish to receive “QNI” as it is published, contact the editor James Wades at jameswades@gmail.com.

Happy New Year and happy reading.  See you on the nets.

Upcoming Ham Radio License Class Sponsored by the Sturdy Memorial Hospital Amateur Radio Club

K2TGX-Ray Cord Writes:

For those of you interested in Radio Communications and have thought about getting your Ham Radio License,

Here is the perfect opportunity during the doldrums of winter.

The Sturdy Memorial Hospital Amateur Radio Club will be sponsoring a Entry level (Technician) class that will almost insure a willing
student that you will get your FCC License. The class is an 8 week course one night per week for no more that 2 hours. This pace allows all the proper time to grasp concepts and procedures that are required. The end of the course will be a review and administration of the FCC Technician Class License Exam by Volunteer License Examiners. Upon passing the exam you will receive your license with your new FCC assigned Call sign. If for some reason you don’t pass you are eligible to retake the test at another session, you do not have to take the course again.

The Cost of the course is just the cost of the Training manual $30.00 and the cost of the FCC Final Exam $15.00. The manual is a must for the course and will be available at the class.
The class will start on Thursday Jan. 22nd at 7:00 PM in Conference Room A/B/C at Sturdy Hospital. It will run for 8 consecutive
Thursday nights at the same time. Be advised that due to scheduling the room number may change.  Conference Room A/B/C
is located on the Main Floor of the Hospital and may be accessed through the Emergency Room Entrance.

Please register in advance by sending an email listing your name, address, Home Telephone #, Cell Phone # and email address to Gary Powers KB1KA Club President at kb1ka@cox.net.  This info is necessary in case classes need to be changed due to the weather and also insure an adequate amount of supplies

Thank you for your interest! Happy New Year!

H.R. 4969 Recap

ARRL CEO Dave Sumner, K1ZZ writes:

The members of the U.S. House of Representatives have headed home for the holidays, marking the end of the 113th Congress on that side of Capitol Hill. When the 114th Congress convenes in January a new legislative cycle will begin. We expect the Amateur Radio Parity Act to be reintroduced in the House with a new number; H.R.4969 will no longer apply.

On behalf of the ARRL Board and staff I want to thank you, and through you the field organization volunteers and members in your Section, for your help in gathering legislative support for H.R. 4969. We had hoped to gain 30 co-sponsors for the bill and ultimately ended up with 69, plus the sponsor. The overwhelming majority of these 70 supporters are returning in January, which gives us a good base on which to grow additional support.

Once we know the new number of the bill we will once again be asking for your help in recruiting co-sponsors. The objective is to continue the momentum, gathering enough support to move the bill through the Energy & Commerce Committee. We have received expressions of interest from the Senate side and are hoping to have the bill introduced there as well.

Thanks for all you do on behalf of Amateur Radio. Best wishes for the holidays.
