Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for June 2010

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for June is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for June is Monday June 7th, 2010, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site and the repeaters that will be linked in will be through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/map.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,

WW2MAN QRV For Museum Ships Operation, June 5-6, 2010

photo of SeehundThe Seehund Amateur Radio Association will activate the Seehund U-5075 as WW2MAN in Quincy for the Museum Ships Special Event operation June 5-6, 2010. Over eighty ships around the world will take part in the event.

Operators Henry Brown, K1WCC and Whitey Doherty, K1VV will be QRV on 40, 30, 20 and, possibly, higher frequencies if open. DX QSL via the bureau; W/K via the callbook address. A standard-sized SASE is required for a card.

Honoring Club Workers

I am sure in every ham radio club there are persons who continually work behind the scene to make the club active and prosperous. Possibly it’s the one who gets the monthly newsletter out on time every month. Maybe it is the one who makes sure there is coffee and donuts for each club meeting. Or the one who has organized and run Field Day for the last few years. Our clubs would not operate without these dedicated individuals who we can all depend upon to “deliver the goods” without ever having to be told to do so. They are the unsung heroes of the club.

Your club may also have some “old timers” in it. You know….those guys who have been around since Marconi’s time and have logged more hours on the air that you can imagine. These guys are always around and always can be counted on to pitch in when asked. They can give sage advice from their years of experience and can help us all avoid some of the problems they have seen and solved in the past.

Why not honor the person or persons who work behind the scene and your “old timers”? Ham radio clubs don’t often have a way of honoring their members. Sure, some clubs have a “ham of the year” award , and that is good, but how about honoring several of your members at once. They work for no pay and no recognition…….but honoring them helps keep them going, helps keep the club operating in good fashion and is often an inspiration for other members.

I have found that a simple 8 1/2 by 11 inch framed document makes an excellent and inexpensive award. This award might have the club logo and the ARRL logo on it and should have some wording that explains the reason for the award. It can be signed by the President and Vice President . This could easily be made on a computer by one of several graphics programs. I have successfully used PowerPoint for this application. One can buy rather inexpensive frames for these awards at The Christmas Tree Shop…….although I will never admit I have ever gone into one……ha ha ha !

An ideal situation would be for the club President to make the award presentation at one of your monthly meetings. There would be nothing at all wrong with making a big deal out of the presentation. It would be a good photo opportunity!

So, give it some thought. You can reward hard workers for just a little effort and in so doing make your club a much better club and one that is even more friendly than it is today.

Southeastern MA ARA To Share Tower

SEMARA logoThe Southeastern MA Amateur Radio Association has agreed to assist the Dartmouth Police Department by allowing a law enforcement radio receiving antenna to be placed on top of the club’s tower.

The police department requested the antenna placement via a letter which was read at the club’s April meeting. After discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and passed to allow the antenna placed atop the tower with certain stipulations. The SEMARA Board of Directors is expected to approve the final decision.

“Ham Radio Cruise Night” And Ice Cream

Gary's Ice Cream adA local Northern MA amateur has hit upon a unique idea to promote his ice cream business–and, ham radio. Gary Frascarelli, W1GFF, proprietor of “Gary’s Home Made Ice Cream” in East Chelmsford has established what he calls “Ham Radio Cruise Night.” Hams are encouraged to visit his store every Saturday night between 5-8 p.m. to show off their mobile rigs, and bring along GOTA rigs. Frascarelli says “on site hook-ups for an HF sloper antenna and 2m/440 antennas are available.”

W1GFF bills the event as an opportunity for current hams, former hams–and anyone interested in ham radio to socialize.

MWRA Water Emergency ARES/RACES Situation Report #2 – Water Emergency Ends

Hello to all..

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority reported a major water pipe leak in the town of Weston, Massachusetts at approximately 130 PM Saturday May 1st. A boil-water order had been placed into effect for numerous communities in the MWRA coverage area and Governor Deval Patrick has declared a state of emergency to enable National Guard troop use for this situation.

At 345 AM Tuesday May 4th, the boil water order was lifted for all 30 affected communities. Repairs were made to the water main pipe coupling that failed and the repair is working well with water now flowing from the main water supply once again. Water tests from all communities have come back positive and that is why the boil water order has been lifted. The MWRA, MEMA and the Governor’s Office has issued post-boil water order instructions for the communities affected by the water main break. Complete details and updates can be seen via the following links:

The Massachusetts State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) will remain at full activation for today. The operation will now switch to recovering all water in staging and establish storage sites at two locations. RACES has not been activated at the region/state level and activation of Eastern Massachusetts ARES is not anticipated as operations begin to wind down.

We will continue to montior this situation but barring an unforeseen escalation of this incident, this will be the last situation report issued as the MWRA Water Emergency has ended. Thanks to all for their support and monitoring of this incident and we hope those that were affected can now get back to normal usage of their water supply!

“Find Your Way” Guidance Appears on the ARRL.ORG Website

Find Your Way

Newington CT – The ARRL recently posted a special section to help users navigate around their new website.  The site is still not functioning without significant problems, but the ARRL now feels that it is time for general users to start their own journeys on the site.  Please click on the ARRL Logo on the top left of this page, and then click on this special logo on their site to begin your exploration and familiarization.

The hope is that the users will take the time to submit cogent observations and constructive suggestions for the improvement of the site.  Recently, Mike, K1TWF, at the recent NSRA meeting (please see story below), counseled this very point observing that persistence on their part would only go to help with rapid resolution.  It was also announced that Harold Kramer, WJ1B, ARRL’s Chief Operating Officer, stated that returning to the old format or running it in parallel with the new format is not a viable option.

During the same meeting, Mike, K1TWF, and Mike, W1MPN, were asked to explain the noticable decline in service in many parts of the ARRL organization.  W1MPN replied that the “all hands on deck” approach to solve the functionality problem with their new website undoubtably has contributed to this problem.  The SM reinterated that the section staff stands ready to help members address any pressing problems with Headquarters.   W1MPN stated that in the interim, this (ema.arrl.org) website will continue to have pertinent information and news for members use.

ARRL New England Division Vice Director Mike Raisebeck, K1TWF, Speaks to NSRA Club

Mike Raisebeck-K1TWF
Peabody, MA – Mike Raisbeck, K1TWF, ARRL Vice Director for the New England Division spoke to the NSRA club at their regular monthly meeting on Monday April 19th.  Billed as an “ARRL night”, Mike headed a delegation of ARRL officials including, Phil Temples, K9HI, Ass’t Director NE Division, EMA SM Mike Neilsen, W1MPN, EMA ASEC, Jim Palmer, KB1KQW, and EMA DEC for the North Shore, Eric Horwitz, KA1NCF.

Raisbeck and Neilsen fielded questions concerning the ongoing problem of poor service and the troubled new website project.  Mike, K1TWF, counseled patience with this problem, and recommended persistence in forwarding suggestions and feedback to the ARRL.

K1TWF presented a discussion on the future of the hobby in the face of remarkable technical advances.  He introduced the notion of a future world of technological advances and a continued devotion to traditional values.  His technical vision of the future included discussing hobby interest in a world which will be dominated by the internet and its many derivatives.  A discussion ensued surrounding the notion that interest will probably remain very strong in our traditional communication modes, even with young people.  Mike relayed a story that he compared our hobby to young people as a fascinating game, where speed and skill are very important attributes.

Boston Marathon – Monday April 19th, 2010 Coordination Message

Hello to all..

While this may be a bit off topic for some SKYWARN Spotters, Amateur Radio Operators and Red Cross volunteers, many of which are SKYWARN Spotters, will be involved in the Boston Marathon on Monday April 19th. To reach out to the highest level of Amateur Radio Operators involved in the event, this coordination message is being sent out to the SKYWARN email list and posted to the various Amateur Radio lists. We appreciate everyone’s patience with this message. This is likely to be the only coordination message on the Marathon unless a significant change in the weather forecast occurs. See information below:

Eastern Massachusetts ARES members not participating in the Boston Marathon should be in a heightened state of awareness for marathon activities on Monday April 19th from 7 AM-7 PM for any significant issues outside of the Boston Marathon that may require Amateur Radio Emergency Communications support and for any unexpected issues on the Boston Marathon route. With over 300 Amateur Radio Operators staffing the Boston Marathon route, the start line and the finish line, if an issue arises needing Amateur Radio support outside of the Marathon route or an unexpected issue arises in marathon operations, it is important that any ARES members not involved in the marathon can help with any response that is required. The Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net Control Center at the town of Bridgewater EOC will be active to backup any issues at marathon net control and monitor any events within the marathon and outside of the marathon. A second backup to marathon operations will be in Walpole as done in years past.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) UCC (Unified Command Center) at the SEOC (State Emergency Operations Center) will be active for the Boston Marathon. Amateur Radio Operators will be at the SEOC to support backup operations while many agencies will be there performing primary operations for the marathon. A Press Release from MEMA can be seen at the following link:

http://ares.ema.arrl.org/local/News_Release_UCC_2010.doc

The weather outlook for the Boston Marathon is one that should be favorable for volunteers and favorable to slightly warm for the runners. The Weather Forecast across the Boston Marathon is for partly to mostly sunny conditions throughout the day. There will be a 10-15 MPH breeze with gusts of 20-25 MPH along the route. Temperatures will range in the mid to upper 30s early in the morning warming to the upper 40s to low 50s by mid morning to the upper 50s to around 60 degrees by afternoon. This means that conditions for the runners should be reasonable with an ‘average’ amount of ambulance requests along the route versus some prior years where warmer weather conditions resulted in some of the highest amounts of ambulance requests since Amateur Radio Operators have handled the event. It is noted that conditions this year are slightly warmer than last year so ambulance requests may run slightly higher than last year’s marathon.

For Amateur Radio, Red Cross and all other volunteers along the route, it is recommended that you dress in layers for this event so that you can put on or take off clothes as needed for comfort. Be sure to drink liquids and eat properly during the event and that you are self-sufficient so that you can be of a full help to the function and not distract everyone from the main purpose of supporting the runners by having a health issue on your end that can be avoided. No rain is expected at this time so there should be no need for rain gear.

Barring a significant change in the weather forecast, this will be the only coordination message on the Boston Marathon. We appreciate everyone’s support in this event and hope those that volunteer enjoy themselves and feel the self-satisifcation of supporting this historic event and those that are monitoring the Marathon or events outside of the Marathon realize that the monitoring is an important function as well and is a testament to being able to scale other incidents beyond the marathon if required. Thanks to all for their support!

KB1KQW Featured In Marathon Story

photo of Jim Palmer, KB1KQW, courtesy Lynn Daily ItemToday’s Daily Item of Lynn, MA featured a front page story with photo of BAA Marathon volunteer Jim Palmer, KB1KQW. Entitled Boston Marathon: Let’s visit Control Central, the story describes Palmer’s activities at the Net Control Station, W1M, and the integral role that hams play in ensuring the runners’ safety for the annual event.

KB1KQW is an active member of the North Shore Radio Association, and an Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator for Eastern Massachusetts.

Boston University ARC Now QRV!

There appears to be a resurgence of Amateur Radio activity from Boston University, according to Cape Ann ARA member Dave Delakas, KB9YOZ. Delakas has been hard at work setting up a new HF station at Boston University–W1BUR–and he’s looking for some CAARA members–or anyone else on the airwaves–to help W1BUR make some HF QSOs.

“If you’re around the HF rig on Friday April 9th, W1BUR will be on the air from 2:00 to 4:00 PM ET on 20 meters.”

W1BUR will be on 14.150 Mhz phone but if that’s busy, listen for them up the band in 30 khz steps: 14.180, 14.210, 14.240, etc. Delakas says if 20 meters is no good, they will try 75 meters phone starting at 3.900 MHz and up, in 30 khz steps.

Congrats to all involved on the ressurrection of this Eastern MA college club station.

SKYWARN Training, Concord MA, May 15, 2010

SKYWARN logo

Steve Telsey, N1BDA writes:

There will be a SKYWARN Storm Spotter training class May 15 at Concord Academy, in the Ransome room of the Math and Arts Center which is located across from the Gym. Concord Academy is located at 166 Main Street in Concord. Parking at the school is limited; however, there is a municipal parking lot off of Main Street on Keyes Road. The training is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.

Rob Macedo, KD1CY a 15-year veteran of the NWS SKYWARN program will be the presenter. The program covers topics such as hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, down bursts and other summer and winter weather events. This highly informative and timely program will also provide information on identifying cloud formations, identifying hail sizes and estimating wind speed.

This program is open to all and will be of particular interest to anyone who enjoys outside activities such as sports, camping, boating or is just interested in learning more about the weather. This program will also cover safety tips that are appropriate during severe weather events.

The workshop is free, the multi-media presentation is captivating, and the handouts (new this spring) are excellent and informative reference materials. At the end of the program participants will have the opportunity to join the National Weather Service SKYWARN Spotters Program.

Please pass the word and encourage hams and non-hams alike to join us on May 15. I’ll send a reminder in May, but wanted to get the info out early so it can go on calendars.
