Monthly ARES Net Tonight at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater System

Hello to all….

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for February is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for March is Monday March 7th, 2005, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening.

Based on last month’s net, we have made some revisions to the net process. Net Control will be advising folks that on the first round, you should check-in with your Call-Sign ONLY and then on the 2nd round, you’ll be asked for your name, location, whether you are fixed, mobile or portable, what MMRA repeater you are checked into and give any traffic, announcmenets or
comments to the net. We’re hoping this will improve the process of getting people checked into the net and make the net flow more smoothly. Please follow net control’s lead with the revised preamble.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA
Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. Thanks to all for your
continued participation!

We will have several interesting announcements for the net this evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via
email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at

EMa ARES Exercise 3/12 CANCELLED

The ARES Exercise scheduled for Saturday March 12th, 2005 has been cancelled. The reason for the cancellation is that we have had numerous ARES and SKYWARN Activations for what has been a very active winter in Eastern Massachusetts. The latest activation on Monday Evening February 28th into Tuesday Morning March 1st had numerous Amateurs up through the night monitoring coastal flooding, reporting snowfall and reporting damage and power outages from the heavy, wet snow that fell over the region. ARES Exercise for Saturday March 12th, 2005 Cancelled/Future Exercise Updates

This exercise scenario will be utilized at another time, potentially for the Fall SET in the October-November timeframe. A scenario had been drawn up for this exercise in advance and will simply need a frequency plan and some minor edits and the exercise will be fully planned.As far as further exercises, Eastern Massachusetts ARES will have a remote support role in the TOPOFF exercise that will be occurring in Connecticut the week of Monday April 4th through Friday April 8th. Most ARES personnel in the section will be asked to support that remote function in some form and further details will follow in later postings. In addition, the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section will be attempting to organize an ARESMAT to support Connecticut ARES with a team sent into Connecticut to perform the various functions Connecticut ARES has requested. Those that we select for the ARESMAT team will be done by invitation only with the invites being sent by myself or the DEC for the appropriate area contacting specific individuals to see if they are interested in supporting the ARESMAT. There shall be no self-deployments into Connecticut for TOPOFF as if you have not been properly registered and have credentials, you will not be allowed to participate and could result in serious legal consequences if you show up without going through the proper process. Also, during the week of the TOPOFF exercise, MARS will be having an exercise on Sunday April 9th and further details on that exercise will follow in later postings.

After the exercise in early April, a Statewide Hurricane Exercise will be done on the first Monday of June 2005. This is typically a MEMA Region II exercise but this year, it will be expanded to be a statewide exercise. Further details on this exercise will also follow in later postings.

This is shaping up to be another active year for Eastern Massachusetts ARES in 2005. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact your local EC/DEC or myself with those questions or feedback.

Save The K1USN Scouting Program

K1USN QSL card Here’s an update on the future of the K1USN scouting program.

I said I would stay on as volunteer coordinator if I got 30 or more signups. I have received a grand total of 14 signups from 4 people.

So we’re almost halfway there towards saving the program.

However, I’m going to have to hear from some others if we are to save this program.

Right now I still need 1 additional volunteer for Saturday morning, March 5, and 3 additional volunteers for Saturday afternoon, March 5.

As indicated in my last message, I will only stay on as volunteer coordinator if I get a total of 30 commitments. They don’t necessarily have to be for specific dates. I have been accepting commitments from people to participate in a specific number of sessions without specifying in advance exactly which ones.

If you want to see this program continue, email your commitment to me this week.

A message from the Public Information Coordinator

Hi everyone, My name is Ron Wood W1PLW and I am the new PIC for the Ea. Ma. Section. I am replacing Jim N1IV, Who left some big shoes to fill. I thank Jim for all he has done for amateur radio in Ea. Ma.

Fist off, So I can update my records, I would like to know if your club has a PIO and who it is. I would also like to know if your club doesn’t have someone that handles Public Information for your club. If your club doesn’t currently have a PIO I encourage you to think about having someone in that position. And make public relations a permanent part of your club and activities.

The winter weather is almost over (I hope) and spring is right around the corner. Field day is not that far away. That is a great time to improve public awareness of amateur service to the community and to show and inform the public about Amateur Radio. If you need help putting a press release together I would be glad to help you with that.

If your club has an interesting speaker or is planning or has participated in a special event or activity let me know so we can get your club some PR. If you have an interesting topic and would be available to other clubs to make a presentation I would also like to know, so I can keep a list of speakers if a club should need one.

I look forward to working with the staff, clubs and hams in the area to promote Amateur Radio in Ea. Ma.

Harvard Wireless Club: “The Invisible Long Wire Caper”

Of course, I can’t resist retelling this story. Harvard Wireless Club (HWC) old timers will remember. Back in 1989, under the questionable leadership of President Gunnar Trumbull, a plan was hatched to run an “invisible” long wire from 6 Linden to the bell tower at Lowell House. This mission was in quest of a better radiator for the HF bands since we had very little in the way of antennas back then.

Gunnar, Satish Vangal, Mario Inchosa and a handful of other plotters obtained several thousand feet of very fine gauge copper wire and early one morning before dawn, managed to string the wire from our roof, over the telephone wires on Mt. Auburn St., and all the way to the base of Lowell tower. Our boys then gained entrance to the bell tower (don’t ask) and Satish (known some years later for battling the French Navy who were attempting to board the Greenpeace Warrior upon which he was the chief radio operator) was sent up the bell tower to secure the Lowell end of the wire.
This caper almost succeeded except that the campus police showed up and put a screeching halt to the project. However, the police had not a clue what was going on with all of this monkey business. Satish pleaded that he had been depressed and despondent over his studies, which is why he climbed the tower. The other HWC guys picked up on that line and explained to the police how they had been trying to reason with their desperate classmate. The police apparently felt their anguish. All culprits were released from custody when Satish promised to seek counseling. And that put an end to the HWC-Lowell House long wire caper.

Those of us who were responsible adult members of the HWC at the time naturally distanced ourselves from this clandestine and risky project. Which is not to say that it does not make for a fine piece of HWC lore worth retelling some 16 years later.

Acton Hams Rally On Tower Zoning

Some of you may know that the town of Acton is trying to change the tower zoning laws with respect to ham radio antenna towers.

The current law as it stands today only permits ham tower structures to be about 40 feet (simplification – it can be lower in some cases). When the town of Acton was made aware of the federal and state laws they decided that the town ham tower zoning ordinance was too restrictive. The proposed new ordinance would permit one 80-foot tower (yes, only one).

To my amazement, at the zoning board meeting [on February 22, 2005] we (hams of Acton – who accounted for most of the people in the room) succeeded in convincing them to go one step further. In the end they voted almost unanimously (all but the chairman) to essentially put the words “except ham radio towers” in the town tower ordinance. By this they mean that the way it is written they are now proposing that there be NO town zoning ordinance governing ham radio towers in Acton. After we explained the Federal (and state) laws to them they decided that they had no choice. It is my understanding that this is what the town of Harvard did.

However, I think that getting it by the planning board was the easy part. Convincing 2/3 of the people of Acton that this is a good idea will be very hard. If it fails then the planning board has to start all over (and in the meanwhile we are stuck dealing with the more restrictive ordinance that still stands). I don’t know when the vote will be but anyone who is on this list and lives in Acton should make sure to vote.

Comments from the ARES Net

KD1CY-Rob @ W1AEC:
Cape Cod ARES will be holding an exercise on Saturday February 12th, 2005 from 10 AM-Noon. It will be an outdoor mobilization in the cold and snow. This drill was cancelled from the original date of January 29th due to recovery from the blizzard.

There will be a section wide exercise for Eastern Massachusetts ARES on Saturday March 12th, 2005 from 10 AM-1 PM. Further details will be posted on the web site and for next month’s ARES Net.

There will be an Emergency Communications Workshop Saturday April 2nd, 2005 from 9 AM-4 PM at the Ipswich High School. Further details will be posted on the web site and for next month’s ARES Net.

Carl-N1FY:
Carl announced their Weekly SKYWARN/Emergency Preparedness Net on the 147.180-Bridgewater Repeater, PL: 67.0 Hz meets every Saturday at 8 PM.

Mark-KB1EKN:
Announced that the Boston Marathon is looking for volunteers and that support is still needed. He mentioned the Boston Marathon web site for sign-up at http://www.bmarc.info/

Technical Issues

We had problems where the 146.610-Marlboro Repeater could hear the link but
people checking in on that repeater were not heard through the rest of the
MMRA system. From W1AEC’s location, a barely audible station was heard
underneath the Marlboro Repeater putting out tones. It is unclear what
caused the issue and Bryan-W1BRI was going to look into the issue with the
system. This underscores the importance of running the monthly net as its
good practice for net control and it helps to work out any issues
technically by more frequent use of the system.

Preamble Changes

Preamble changes will be made to ask for the call-sign only on the first
round and then get everyone’s name, location, title, comments/announcements
in the second round of the net. It is expected that these preamble changes
will make the net flow better for next month’s net in March.

MA Statehouse “Everything is quiet on the Hill.” This, according to MA State Government Liaison Shawn O’Donnell, K3HI, in a recent email to Section Manager Mike Neilsen, W1MPN.

“As of the beginning of 2005, the Massachusetts State Legislature has begun a new session. Any bills that did not become law by the end of 2004 have expired, including last year’s H-3919 on cell phones and driving.”

I sent a message last week asking whether we should shut down the K1USN scouting program. The responses were quite underwhelming. I got responses from about 10 people, including 2 who actually volunteered to help with the scouts. We lost about 4 subscribers to the list as a result of my message.

Everyone – if you want to see this program continue, email me this week volunteering to help with one or more of the following sessions. If you really want to see the scouting program continue, also forward this message to other hams in Eastern Mass.

All morning sessions are from 9:30am to 10:30am on Saturday. All afternoon sessions are from 3pm till 6pm on Saturday. Volunteers should plan on arriving 30 minutes early to help with setup, and staying a few minutes late to help with cleanup.

No experience is necessary. Our experienced volunteers will show you what needs to be done. There are jobs for no-code Techs and even unlicensed individuals!

Here’s the deal. This message is going out to almost 100 subscribers. If I get 30 or more person-session signups as a result of this message, I will assume that there is still interest in this program, and I will commit to acting as volunteer coordinator until June 30. If I do not, then I will resign as volunteer coordinator and shut down the program until such a time as someone else decides to start it up again.

Your response to this message determines whether we introduce 2656 scouts to amateur radio over the next 4 months, or shut down the K1USN scouting program.

Greg Richardson, N1QLS, who was a former Technical Coordinator for the Eastern MA ARRL section passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2005. Greg was the Communications Supervisor for the Boston Fire Department and served on several public safety communications committees. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla, N1VQY. Greg was an active member of the Mystic Valley Amateur Radio Group. He will be sorely missed.

PART Members To Construct Satellite Antennas

Police ART logo Members of the Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford are participating in a unique construction project at their monthly February meeting.

“We will be constructing hand held satellite antennas,” writes “Bo” Budinger, WA1QYM. “Allison, KB1GMX, has graciously constructed parts kits for these 2 meter/440 antennas. This antenna design is suitable for working several of the latest ham satellites using just a dual band walkie or a 2 meter and a 440 walkie. The cost for each antenna is $35.” According to Budinger, the antenna has three elements on 2 meters and 6 elements on UHF. The boom is 36 inches long.

Ten club members have signed up to participate in the kit building; a few kits remain available for those members who have not yet signed up.

The February PART meeting will be held at 7:30 PM on Tuesday February 15 at the Westford Police Station. “All are invited to attend whether you’re constructing your own antenna or not,” says WA1QYM.

Cape & Islands ARES Exercise, Feb. 12, 2005

There will be a Cape & Islands ARES Exercise this Saturday Feb. 12th from 10am-12pm. It is a rescheduled exercise that was postponed due to the Blizzard of 2005.

Several stations, including our primary field team will be using NVIS 40m at 7232khz +-10khz. A
secondary will be at 7275khz +-10khz. Any stations wishing to check in are welcome to do so. We will also be operating 6m, and will attempt to use the 6m MEMA RACES repeater and some possible SSB at 50.225mhz.

Our primary field site will be utilizing multiple bands/modes. Simultaneous operation will be conducted on 2m,6m,440,75m, and packet 145.010.

Volunteers Requested: Kids At Risk Half Marathon/5K Run, Boston, March 13, 2005

The Boston Police and the State Police are sponsoring a half marathon and a 5K run and walk to benefit the “Kids at Risk” programs. All events run concurrently with the start and finish at the World Trade Center in South Boston. They will be held on Sunday, 13 March, with hams reporting at 0900.

The sponsorship is of particular interest to us since it gives hams exposure to the police departments, letting them see the communication skills we use under critical situations.

Considering the short notice we were given for this new event, our prompt mobilization will also be observed.

While the final routes have not yet been authorized, the venue is expected to be in the Back Bay, downtown Boston, and Cambridge. Course aid stations, a mobile, and several shadows are expected. All stations should be closed by early afternoon (some sooner).

We should not miss this opportunity to show public agencies what we can do. Time is short and your help is needed. If you can lend a hand or you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Bob Salow, WA1IDA, at wa1ida@arrl.net or 508.650.9440.

USS Salem Volunteers Needed, Feb. 12, 2005

What if we had an opportunity to demonstrate amateur radio to 73 youngsters – the potential next generation of hams – and nobody showed up?

I still need volunteers for Saturday, 2/12/2005, from 3pm to 6pm, to demonstrate amateur radio to scouts visiting the USS Salem.

Please email me at W1AI@hamtestonline.com if you can help! If I do not have at least 3 more volunteers by Friday morning, I will be forced to cancel again! We’ve been doing that a lot recently! Let’s not let another group of scouts down this weekend!

No prior experience is necessary. We can train you!

Live too far away from Quincy, MA? You can still help! I’m looking for someone to take over the task of volunteer coordinator. No prior experience on the USS Salem is required. We can train you! All you need is reliability and good people skills!
