IC-2800H Stolen in Boston

RaccoonFrank D’Auria, W1AD, Rutland, Vermont writes:

My IC-2800H was stolen along with the vehicle it was in from Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton earlier today. I had loaned the radio to a friend, Jared, KB1KPP, who is new in the Boston area looking for a computer techie job.

It was programmed with Boston, Eastern MA, NH and Vermont frequencies on VHF and UHF. The ‘welcome’ screen when the unit is turned on indicated Jared’s callsign KB1KPP.

Jared’s middle initial on his license is “D” but a bootlegger would be pretty lucky to know the middle name is Dalton.

Thanks for any help you can give and any word you can get out.

73 and Happy Holidays!

ARES Web Site Activity and Best Holiday Wishes and Thanks for Your Support

Over the past few weeks, the ARES web site has been relatively quiet as our staff prepares for the holiday season as many of our members are doing as well. Also, the Eastern Massachusetts ARES staff has been hard at work on a “Calendar of Events and Training” for 2005 as well. As holiday preparations wind down, we will have several topics that will be covered here on the web-site.

We had an excellent ARES Drill in late October and a report on that will follow in the next few weeks. We also had an excellent SKYWARN Recognition Day where Eastern Massachusetts was well represented with active stations at the National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts and with the Boston Amateur Radio Club Station setup at the Blue Hill Observatory. An update complete with pictures will be posted in the coming weeks as well.

2004 was an extremely successful year for Eastern Massachusetts ARES. In addition to flawless support and execution for SKYWARN Activations, ARES drills and Emergency Communications Workshops, the biggest ARES mobilization in recent years was completed for the Democratic National Convention. While no incidents occurred during the DNC, the fact that Eastern Massachusetts ARES could mobilize and support a sustained 4-day event for 16 hours per day is a testament as to how far the organization has grown. While there is much work to be done and we have yet to be tested in a true disaster-type situation, the growth over the past several years has been self-evident and the ARES staff truly appreciates the tremendous support from ARES members in the section. It is hoped that we will also have a report on the DNC in the coming weeks as well.

Despite the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, our staff is monitoring for any threats, weather or otherwise, that could cause an ARES mobilization and this web-site along with the various email lists that are maintained are ways for the membership to stay in touch. On behalf of the entire Eastern Massachusetts ARES staff, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season. This is a wonderful time for friends and family to get together. Don’t hesitate to contact the ARES leaadership if you have any questions or concerns.

Respectfully Submitted,

Robert Macedo (KD1CY)

WA1IDA Resigns As Assistant Section Manager

It is with regret that I accept today the resignation of S. Robert Salow, WA1IDA.

As my “primary” Assistant Section Manager these past four years, Bob has been instrumental in serving as my backup. He’s provided me with sage counsel. Bob has served as an excellent sounding board for many ideas and projects.

WA1IDA has a very long list of accomplishments. He has served as President of the Middlesex Amateur Radio Club, and is the founding President of the Boston Amateur Radio Club. He is a founder of the Council of Eastern Massachusetts Amateur Radio Clubs (CEMARC). Bob has been an Assistant Director of the ARRL New England Division, and its delegate to the ARRL Public Service Advisory Committee.

WA1IDA was also elected Chairperson of the Massachusetts Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (MAVOAD) which supports the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) for all voluntary agencies in the state. Bob has received training for all levels of the Incident Command System.

Please join me in thanking S. Robert Salow, WA1IDA for his long-standing service to the members of the Eastern Massachusetts ARRL Section!

Subject: New England Division Cabinet Meeting

Date: Saturday, January 8, 2005

I’d like to invite you to the ARRL New England Division Cabinet meeting on Saturday, January 8, 2005 in Springfield MA. We usually have 30+ people attending from clubs across New England – this will be an opportunity for you to provide direct input to the ARRL on policy issues. The meeting will run from 9:00 AM until 4:30 PM, with a break for lunch at noon – and as in the past we’re asking for your contribution of $15 to help cover some of the cost for breaks and for lunch.

There is an ARRL Board meeting scheduled for January 21-22 – this will give us a chance to talk about issues you think the Board should be considering. What would you like to see on the agenda for the meeting?

The meeting will be at the Sheraton Springfield Hotel (413-781-1010) at One Monarch Place in Springfield MA (If you like basketball, it’s real close to the new Basketball Hall of Fame). If you have to travel a long distance and want to stay for the night, the hotel has offered us rooms for $89 if reserved by December 29th. Directions are here:
http://www.sheraton-springfield.com/Directions.htm

Please let me know by December 31st (earlier is better!) if you will be coming so we can plan for a big enough room and enough food. Park in the hotel parking area – we’ll cover the costs. Both Vice Director Mike Raisbeck, K1TWF, and I are looking forward to seeing you there!

YI9 Internet Gateway Close to Reality

W7DXX logoA proposed Internet radio gateway in Iraq is very close to being realized, according to local amateur Keith Lamonica, W7DXX. (See “Easton Ham To Install Remote Base in Iraq”.) “We are a week or so away from sending the remote base package to Baghdad,” writes Lamonica in an email to interested parties this week.

Lamonica adds that the YI9DXX gateway will be a “closed system.” As such, he will not distribute information such as IP addresses and passwords out to parties via his email list. “The Baghdad remote is available only to those of you who have contributed toward the equipment and/or sent equipment.”

Lamonica has no plans to charge dues or membership fees but he does expect participants to help defray small expenses: QSL cards, postage, gas for the generator, etc.

W7DXX says he’ll have details about the DX remote base after the first of the year.

Nashoba Valley ARC QSL Bureau Sort/Certificate of AppreciationNVARC members sorting W1 QSLsNashoba Valley ARC members “dug in” and sorted 115 pounds of W1 QSL cards at its October meeting. For those who are unfamiliar with this magnitude of QSL cards, that’s approximately 20,000 cards!

The Yankee Clipper Contest Club awarded NVARC a Certificate “for many years of dedicated service to the W1 QSL Bureau” at the recent New England Division Convention in Boxboro.

Brigham And Women’s Hospital To Incorporate Amateur Radio Into Emergency Plans

Boston ARC logoBrigham and Women’s Hospital is planning to include Amateur Radio in its emergency plans, according to Boston ARC Vice President Blake Haskell, K1BTH. Haskell met recently with representatives from Boston Emergency Management Agency and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The hospital is working on installing an antenna and feedline from the roof to a small room that would be used by amateurs in the event of an emergency.

Billerica ARS To Donate To Food Pantry

Billerica ARS logoThe Billerica Amateur Radio Society announced that it is collecting food to donate to a local food pantry. According to the club’s December newsletter, BARS is encouraging all its members to visit a grocery store and stock up on a couple of canned goods. The goods were collected at the club’s December 1 meeting; they will be given to the Billerica Food Pantry. Donations that arrive after the meeting will be delivered to the Pantry by special arrangement.

USS Salem 6-Meter Repeater Update, Etc.

K1USNHarold “Pi” Pugh, K1RV writes:

“I want to give everyone an update on the K1USN Six Meter repeater. The repeater will soon be located on the Cohasset water tower thanks to the dedicated work of a few individuals. This will give increased coverage and will allow for better access and control of repeater operations.

This repeater will round out our stable of repeaters in the South Coast. The South Coastal Affiliated Radio Clubs – SCARC (SCARC because the people on the south shore are members of many clubs SNS, Marconi, Salem, Capeway,Whitman ARC, etc. )will have 145.39 (IRLP) 443.6 (ECHOLINK) 145.25 and 53.33 machines for their usage. (These repeaters are open for all to use!)

This new site will provide excellent 6 meter coverage from Cape Cod to NH and will be the first 6 meter repeater that is in our backyards. Since this repeater will be one of the local machines we are asking for small donations to help defray the costs. One of the guys just ordered 350 feet of cable and we would like to help him out with the costs. We are also looking for a 70 cm control receiver.

If anyone can help with a small donation it would be greatly appreciated. If you can help then send your donation to:

I’d also like to let everyone know that NS1N and KC1HO have been busy upgrading both Norwell repeaters. They will have lots of exciting features.

They have purchased new Kenwood repeaters for both the (443.600 88.5HZ)UHF and (145.250 77HZ) VHF machines. Also the VHF machine has a new Hustler G144-7 antenna and lowloss hard-line. A new controller with many exciting features is controlling these machines.

A Kenwood transceiver has been purchased and hooked up to allow the linking of these machines to other area repeaters and the UHF machine has had upgrades to its echolink system.

Anyone wishing to support this system please contact NS1N-

Our November 11th Veterans Day 2004 operation was a tremendous success! We had a dozen operators and made over 500 contacts on HF, VHF and IRLP. Thanks to all who helped make this a success! HRO even loaned us an IC-756-PRO-II from their Salem, NH store!

Taunton NWS Office QRV During SKYWARN Recognition Day

SKYWARN logoThe National Weather Service office in Taunton will be operating during NWS SKYWARN Recognition Day as WX1BOX on December 3 from 7 PM until midnight, and 7 AM to 7 PM on December 4. The station will operate on IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project) on reflector 9219 and on EchoLink WX-Talk Conference, according to SKYWARN Coordinator Rob Macedo, KD1CY. Macedo adds that other NWS offices will also utilize EchoLink and IRLP nodes that are available in their areas. (See also Boston ARC To Operate From Blue Hill Observatory During SKYWARN Recognition Day.)

During the 24-hour activity, radio amateurs set up stations at NWS offices and work as a team to contact other hams around the world. Over 90 NWS offices will be on the air. Endorcements can be earned for contacting the various NWS offices across the country. For more information about SKYWARN Recognition Day, see http://hamradio.noaa.gov/ or the December issue of QST, page 72.

Massasoit ARA Assists In YMCA Road Race

Massasoit ARA members at E. Bridgewater YMCA Road RaceSeven members of the Massasoit Amateur Radio Association members volunteered to provide communication support for the East Bridgewater YMCA 4-mile Fall Frolic Road Race on Sunday October 24, 2004. The weather was overcast and the temperature started out about 50 degrees—perfect weather for a road race.

Carl Aveni, N1FY acted as NCS at at the starting line. The other Amateur Radio volunteers were positioned along the race course at key intersections. Shown in the photo (L-R): Bruce Hayden, NI1X; Carl Aveni, N1FY; Roy Logan, KB1CYV; Walter Fitzgerald, N1LHD; Gary DeCoster, WA1CIM; and Bob Mandeville, N1EDM with Maryanne DeCoster, N1SGW in front.

The YMCA had large signs made up and posted along the race course that alerted the traffic to the race in progress and helped everything run smoothly. The Amateur Radio operators were thanked by the YMCA staff for their support and were soon socializing over hotdogs and hamburgers after the race. Once again a great time was had by all. —MARA News, November 2004

Ham Radio Blood Drive, Worcester EOC, 11/20/04

Red Cross logoMark, WB1ARZ writes:

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate it if you would help me get the word out about the Amateur Radio Operators Blood Drive this Saturday on November 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive will be held at the Worcester EOC located at 50 Skyline Drive, Worcester, MA. This location is directly off of Belmont Street (Rt. 9) in Worcester and the EOC located in the brick National Guard Facility at the South entrance to Green Hill Park.

The Red Cross informed me today that there is a critical shortage of donated blood and it is very worrisome this early in the holiday season. They are hopeful for a large number of donors this Saturday at the Amateur Radio Operators Blood Drive.
Those who donate will be entered into a free raffle to be drawn at the end of the day (you don’t have to be present to win)for some HRO Gift Certificates and Gift Certificates to local Restaraunts. The Red Cross
is also giving out free “T” shirts to donors and will provide refreshments.

There will also be an information table and an event station at the site. Please help us get the word out to your friends and family, fellow hams and non-hams alike. We really need to have a big showing up at the EOC and it will help the critical blood supply shortage in the area.

Those that wish to can preregister for the drive by calling the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. Walk-in donors are also very welcome.

For additional details go to www.wect.net

Thanks and 73,
