Ham Volunteers Needed for DNC July 26-29, 2004

democratic symbolAs requirements for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) continue to be developed by our clients, it is clear that we will need many volunteers to help during the week of the DNC. Duties will range from maintaining net watches at home stations to direct mobilization with teams supporting groups such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and the Boston EOC.

We will need people in two shifts; from 0600-1600 and 1600-0100. The day shift will be most challenging to fill, as the DNC will be taking place during the work week. I cannot ask anyone to take time from work, but if you can arrange to donate a vacation day or two to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally, we are looking for people who have completed any level of training in the Incident Command System (ICS). We would appreciate if all ARES members respond as well, since this particular question was not listed on our membership applications and questionnaires.

Please respond to your EC/DEC or me with any of the above requested information as soon as you can. My sincere thanks in advance for your efforts.

Tower School at Nashua ARC

“The Nashua Area Radio Club (NARC) would like to invite ARES members statewide to attend our annual Tower School event to be held Saturday, June 5 from 9am-2pm at AK1K, 19 Iroquois Road, Nashua, NH 03063. Talk-in on 147.045.

Each year shortly before Field Day, NARC presents Tower School to provide tower climbers and ground crew members basic training in safe and effective practices for erecting Field Day towers and antennas. The training will involve raising a small tower, using the Gin Pole to add tower sections, using come-alongs and wire grips to tighten guy wires, raising antennas through the guy wires, and handling guy wires and coax. We’ll go over safety issues, tools, and clothing as well as climbing and ground crew techniques. Plus, to top it off, we will provide lunch (burgers and dogs) and drinks (water and soda).

If you want to climb, wear good shoes with heavy soles. (Sneakers can be used if that’s all you’ve got, but they don’t provide a lot of support on the small tower rungs.) If you have climbing equipment (belts, lanyards, etc.), by all means bring it along, but if you don’t have equipment, we will have some to loan. A good pair of work gloves is also something you should bring. As far as other tools go, a set of socket and open-end wrenches (specifically 7/16″, 1/2″, and 9/16”) plus a crescent wrench are the most useful.

MMRA Work Party To Clean Up Repeater Site

MMRA logoMembers of the Minuteman Repeater Association are forming a work party to clean up the site of its 449.925/147.270 repeater in Marlborough on June 12, 2004 beginning at 10 a.m. According to MMRA president Bob DeMattia, K1IW, the group intends to clean up the inside and outside area of the shelter, patch some holes, and repair the 6-meter antenna. “In addition to helping the club out, this is a good chance to meet other club members or see the repeater site. The work party will be followed by a early afternoon lunch at a nearby eatery.”

DeMattia adds that MMRA will staff a table at the upcoming Boxboro New England Division Convention on August 14-15, 2004 where members can renew and new people can join the organization.

“The National Weather Service free training seminars for volunteer severe weather spotter continues; only 4 more sessions remain in the Southern New England 2004 cycle.

“The National Weather Service in Taunton gives SKYWARN spotter training at several locations in Southern New England. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. There is no charge. There is no need for pre-registration in the days before a class. However, participants will be asked to fill out a short form during the class.”

“Spotter numbers will be given to anyone at least 16 years of age or older. People younger than 16 who desire a spotter number and who can present special circumstances will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.”

USS Massachusetts On The Air May 31

Radio Operators for Missing Children logoThe Radio Operators for Missing Children (KB1HGK) will host an operating event at the USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

According to the Radio Operators for Missing Children, members of the Central MA Amateur Radio Association will operate three CW stations using World War II vintage radios. Other activities will include: fingerprinting and IDs by Child Safety Education of America, and a presentation by the family of missing child Jennifer Fay. Any child operating a radio will receive a guest operator patch and special event certificate.

EMA Amateurs To Participate in National Hurricane Center Test

EMA Amateurs will participate in an upcoming hurricane test on May 30, 2004. According to ARES SKYWARN Coordinator Rob Macedo, KD1CY, he and Rick Cabral, W1RJC will operate in the 2004 National Hurricane Center (NHC) On-The-Air Station Test. “We will be volunteering as Net Controls for the Echolink/IRLP net. We will also attempt to make contact with the National Hurricane Center via the HF Station from the Southeast MA Amateur Radio Association (SEMARA) station.”

Macedo invites interested hams to visit the SEMARA club shack during the May 30 drill. Coffee and donuts will be served.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the SEMARA Club and Eastern Massachusetts ARES to get national visibility in communicating to the National Hurricane Center … it exemplifies a special kind of public service that only a club with the resources [SEMARA has] can do,” KD1CY notes. “We hope to get wide participation across all the applicable bands and modes from Southern New England and surrounding areas.”

WX4NHC Hurricane Season 2004 On-The-Air Station Test

Sunday, May 30th, 2004 from 9am-6pm EST (1300z-2200z)

We will use our Callsign WX4NHC.

The purpose of this annual Station Test is to test all of our radio equipment, computers and antennas using as many modes and frequencies as possible. RFI monitoring is also done to NOAA & NHC equipment. We will also be testing some new antennas and equipment that are being installed for this coming season. A few new operators will receive hands-on training.

Remember this is just an equipment and operator test, we are not activating any “nets”

WX4NHC will be On-The-Air on HF, VHF, UHF and 2&30 meter APRS

We plan on using the following phone frequencies ± QRM
7.268mhz, 14.325mhz, 21.325mhz, 28.525mhz. CW will be on 14.035, 21.035 and 28.035. PSK31 on 14.070.

Genesis ARS To Host Plymouth Repeater

Genesis ARS logoThe Genesis Amateur Radio Society has been asked to host the Plymouth 146.685 machine, formerly run by the Mayflower ARC. According to the club’s newsletter, the club “overwhelmingly approved taking whatever steps were necessary to effect such transfer.”

The GARS Board of directors met earlier this month to set up a structure enabling the club to accomodate the new responsibility, including establishing a separate account from the general treasury.

The club has named Tom Hurley, K1TH, to chair the repeater committee. In addition, Tom Sullivan, K1TJS, has agreed to serve as the repeater trustee, and Bill Ryan, N1DZD will handle technical matters. The committee is presently gathering information about current operations from MARC, before moving on to the next step.

New School Club Forming: Clay Center ARC

Clay Science CenterA new school radio club is forming in Brookline. The Clay Science Center at the Dexter and Southfield Schools in Brookline will form the Clay Center Amateur Radio Club. An application for a station license will be filed this week, according to Bill Mc Ininch, KA1MOM.

The club founders are: Bob Phinney, K5TEC, Dave Doe, K1HRV, and “Doc” Chamberlin, W1PFX. According to Mc Ininch, the station will be located on the 5th floor of the science center, with excellent height and access to a 5 kW solar array and one kW wind turbine.

“They have a couple of interesting items in their charter,” Mc Ininch adds. “Each new unlicensed member gets an Elmer, and any loaned equipment remains the exclusive property of the person making the loan.”

…SPC and NWS Taunton Are in Agreement on a Slight Risk for Severe Weather for late Tuesday Afternoon and Tuesday Evening for Southern New Hampshire, Western and Central Massachusetts and Northwest/North-Central Connecticut. Damaging Winds and Large Hail are the Primary Threats. Eastern Areas of Southern New England Should Monitor the Situation….
….Threat timeframe is anytime after 2 PM and in particular after 4-5 PM based on current model projections…..
….SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton is Possible for Tuesday….

The Storm Prediction Center has been consistent in their Day-3 Convective Outlook yesterday and the two Day-2 Convective Outlooks issued today that there is a Slight Risk for Severe Weather Across portions of Southern New England. NWS Taunton concurs with this threat. Instability parameters are sufficient for severe weather initiation. Wind field will be much stronger for tomorrow than in the past events. This will result in the possibility of several clusters/lines of thunderstorms with the possibility that these clusters/lines evolve into a “traditional” squall line over the slight risk area. How far east the severe weather reaches will depend on the timing of the convection and what, if any, marine influence does over eastern parts of Southern New England. It is noted that numerous severe reports were received in Michigan as the activity went through that area.

The potential exists for this event to be the first widespread severe weather event in western parts of Southern New England this year. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton is Possible for Tuesday.

PA/MD/DE IS TRENDING EAST…AND MODEL FORECASTS OF THE FLOW SUGGEST
ANY PRECIPITATION WILL PASS TO OUR SOUTH. CONVECTION TO OUR WEST OVER
MICHIGAN EXTRAPOLATES TO OUR WESTERN ZONES AROUND 8 AM. THUS HAVE CUT
POPS FOR TONIGHT TO 20 PERCENT OR LESS WITH INCREASING CHANCES IN
THE WEST AROUND 12Z. TEMPERATURES UPSTREAM THIS MORNING STARTED IN

MAIN FORECAST CONCERN IS FOR TUESDAY. APPROACH OF COLD FRONT FROM

INCREASING S-SW FLOW TO BLOW OUT MUCH OF THE FOG. MODEL CROSS
SECTIONS HOLD IN LOW LEVEL MOISTURE…BUT THIN THE OVERALL MOISTURE
IN THE COLUMN SO THAT WE WOULD EXPECT SKIES TO BECOME AT LEAST
PARTLY SUNNY THROUGH THE CIRRUS VEIL. TEMPERATURES AT H850 ARE
FORECAST TO 13C AND AT H800 TO 10C…SO WITH FULL MIXING ONE MIGHT
EXPECT MAX TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW TO MID 80S. MAX TEMPERATURES
UPSTREAM TODAY HAVE BEEN IN THE UPPER 70S. AM INCLINED TO MOVEMAX
TEMPERATURE FORECAST UP A COUPLE OF DEGREES WITH MAX VALUES AROUND
80 IN THE CONNECTICUT AND MERRIMACK VALLEYS…AND MIN VALUES IN
THE 60S OVER THE CAPE AND ISLANDS. THIS SUGGESTS THE POTENTIAL FOR

Assistance Required for “Bikes Not Bombs”

Short notice, but it’s important that we provide this community service. After 16 years of sponsoring bicycle rides in and around Greater Boston, they came to the realization that cell phones, CB and commercial radios won’t do the job of supporting the riders.

The non-profit organization, Bikes Not Bombs, had its start over 20 years ago to rehabilitate bicycles and provide them to youths here and abroad. Their present focus locally is to help kids learn mechanics and safety and get to own a bike they work on. The health advantages of bike riding are proven.

There will be concurrent 15, 25 and 62 mile rides on Sunday, 23 May. A total of 185 riders are expected. All three rides start near Jamaica Pond, but we will meet at 0800 at a secure parking area in Roxbury Crossing to be transported to the start or to assignments. We have been asked to staff rest stops, follow vehicles and a few shadows. There will be no assignments on the street.

The shorter courses should be finished by 1400, and the long course should finish by 1630. All finishes are at Mississippi’s Restaurant where a gourmet dinner buffet will be provided.

In spite of the short notice, we want to make a good showing at this local event and demonstrate the community value of ham radio. Please help.

Whitman ARC Flea Market, Memorial Day Weekend

Whitman ARC logoThe Whitman ARC will hold its annual flea market at Saftlers resturant on the Sunday and Monday of the Memorial Day Weekend.

According to the MARA News, “The WARC Flea Market is just as well known for its ham socializing as it is for the goodies you can find there. Over the years, that flea market has demonstrated that you can find about anything there. It’s worth it just to drop by and carouse through the booths to see what’s there.”

Additionally, WARC intends to operate a ham station at the event. They invite attendees to drop in, sign the log book, and “make a few QSOs.”
