Welcome to the August 2024 EMA Section Update! This update is also being published to the EMA Section and NE Division websites. Please spread the word. It’s still summer. The weather – at least here on the Cape – has been crazy variable, from hot-humid-swampy to nice-cool-dry, and everything in between. I hope you’re all taking it easy, staying cool, keeping hydrated, and enjoying the nice days. The population of our Cape Cod communities continues at 3-4 times off-season. KA8SCP-Terry Stader – MEMA Region 1 RACES Radio Officer and ARRL ARES District Emergency Coordinator for Region 1 RACES writes: This year’s Baystate Marathon and Half-Marathon race is scheduled for Sunday October 20, 2024. Amateur Radio operators have been asked once again to support the Baystate Marathon and Half Marathon. This year the event is on Sunday, October 20th. Our operational time period is from approximately 0700 until event completion (estimated 1400). Our assistance has been requested by Lowell Office of Emergency Management and Lowell Fire Department. The communications team will be employing Amateur Radio to provide this communications asset. …

From its inception in September 2020, the twice-weekly SST has encouraged CW newcomers to join with experienced ops in a relaxed contest at speeds less than 20WPM. We are planning August 10th at the Mystic Lakes Playground area. It is a little out of the city but there are a few Purple line stations nearby for those that are public transport dependent. This video is a virtual tour of the NIST shortwave time standard station for the Pacific which broadcasts on 2.5, 5, 10 and 15 MHz with highly accurate frequency and time signals, propagation (geomagnetic storm) bulletins and other special announcements. Heads up: the email-blast-to-all-section-members function is still down, a casualty of the cyber-attack on ARRL HQ. There is currently no ETA. I’m publishing the Update on the EMA website and sending it to all the clubs I have email addresses for, with a request to distribute it widely. It’s now officially Summer. That means the population of our Cape Cod communities has swollen by a factor of 3-4. Many, many businesses are making their profits for the year, and that is to be respected.
