Special ARDF and Orienteering Presentation at TACG

IMPORTANT: HR 607

Attention EMA ARRL Members:

The following is an important message from Dan Henderson, N1ND, Regulatory Information Manager at ARRL Headquarters:

“As you may have read, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) has introduced the ‘Broadband for First Responders Act of 2011’ and the bill has been assigned HR 607 as its number. The full story about the Bill’s introduction can be found on the ARRL web at

As you will read, while the ARRL supports spectrum for the Public Safety needs, we oppose HR 607 in its current form because of the inclusion of the 420-440 MHz spectrum (most of the Amateur 70-cm UHF allocation) as part of a spectrum swap.

At the request of ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN, we are asking ARRL members to contact their local Representative asking them to oppose HR 607 in its current form. Members should be directed to http://www.arrl.org/sample-letters for resources tools to assist them in their letter writing. These include:

 

  • A sample letter opposing HR 607 in its current form
  • A link to the ARRL Webpage that gives the ARRL member the contact information for their Members of Congress
  • A link to information sending their letters to our Washington lobbyist to hand-deliver to Capitol Hill

A couple of key points to remember when discussing our opposition to HR 607:

  • We understand and support the principle that Public Safety and First responders should have the D-Block frequencies.
  • Our opposition to the bill stems from the inclusion of the 420-440 MHZ Amateur allocation as part of the proposed “frequency swap”.

Time is of the essence on this request, as the bill is gathering steam in Congress. So please make your membership contacts as soon as possible. Finally, please include my address n1nd@arrl.org in what you distribute to the ARRL membership (for our records here at HQ.)

Possible Waltham May 12-13 Special Event Station Looking for Volunteers

On May 12-13 slightly over 10 square miles of Waltham will be transformed into the world of Jules Verne for an entire weekend to become International Steampunk City, an event expected to draw between 12,000 and 15,000 people. The staff of Charles River Museum of Industry, the headquarters of the event, would like to have a wireless station (the kind that glows in the dark if possible) to link the event to the rest of the world. Unusual possibilities may include being able to string a Zepp from a real miniature zeppelin. The museum is looking both for hams to staff a special event station and for possible backup communications for the various venues across town. Best way to see what’s planned while the internationalsteampunkcitywaltham.org site is being finished up is to Google the event name and read the scattered planning documents or to check it out on Facebook. Anyone with antique gear who might want to show it off is a! lso welcome.

Anyone interested in being a formal part of this event can get in touch with me or with CRMI director Ellen Hagney (Elln Hagney on Facebook). Anyone not able to be part of the crew but interested in a great way to unwind the week after Walk For Hunger should still check it out and come enjoy the mostly (everything outdoors) free fun. NOTE: for the non-free items, things will be run much like First Night.

For next year’s event: a non-transmitting copy of the Massie spark gap station should be finished in time to disguise more modern equipment, including the pump handle key.

Tech Licensing Class In Bourne

Genesis ARS logo The Genesis Amateur Radio Society and Bourne RACES, in cooperation with the Bourne Emergency Management Agency have announced they will hold an Amateur Radio licensing class for the Technician license in March.

The proposed dates are as follows:

  • Friday, March 18, 2011 7PM-9PM 6:30-9:30pm
  • Saturday, March 19, 2011 9am-2pm (between a 30min – 1hr break for lunch)
  • Saturday, March 26, 2011 9am-1pm (30 min break for lunch)
  • Testing, March 26 2pm-4pm for all amateur class licenses

(The location is tentative at this time; the class and testing may be held at the Plymouth Airport.)

The Town of Bourne RACES (the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) is trying to build a team of amateurs to staff EOCs and shelters in the Town during emergencies and to operate stations from their homes for the monthly RACES nets. RACES operators are a vital link between the Massachusetts State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Framingham, the Area EOC in Bridgewater, and the Town of Bourne in relaying vital messages during emergencies.

If you are interested in earning your Amateur Radio license and assisting your town with communications, please join us for these classes. You’ll need to purchase the Technician Q&A manual from the ARRL. The book costs $17.95 plus shipping and handling, but order through Genesis ARS and you can save $0.95 plus shipping and handling. GARS will offer the books for only $17.00; save on shipping and handling.

New Section Traffic Manager: Marcia Forde, KW1U

I’m pleased to announce that Marcia Forde, KW1U of Concord MA has agreed to accept the position of Section Traffic Manager effective immediately. Marcia replaces Jim Ward, N1LKJ who has served faithfully as STM for the section for many years. When I assumed the Section Manager role, Jim indicated to me that he wanted to step down, but was willing to serve as long as needed. I promised Jim that I would make it my priority to find a top-notch replacement. I know that I have succeeded in Marcia.

Marcia rose steadily in the National Traffic System ranks after first getting her feet wet in traffic handling in 1981. Not long after, she became an active member of the elite Transcontinental Corps; later, serving as TCC Director for the Eastern Area. Marcia also served as manager of Eastern Area Net Cycle 2.

KW1U previously served as the Eastern MA Section Traffic Manager for five years back in the 80s. In addition to her “new-old” STM duties, Marcia currently serves at the national level in NTS as Chair of the Eastern Area Staff. Somehow, she also manages to find the time to run a “24×7 multiband scanning Pactor MBO on HF serving the continental US, with local outlet on VHF packet.”

Jim is not disappearing from the picture completely, however. He has graciously agreed to assist Marcia with some of the day-to-day workload. Thanks, Jim!

WX1BOX SKYWARN Presented With Vinyl Banner by TACG

WX1BOX banner, courtesy TACGThe Taunton SKYWARN Amateur Radio Club, WX1BOX recently received a gift of a high quality vinyl banner, courtesy of the Taunton Area Communications Group. It is on display at the NWS Taunton offices. TACG president Greg Glynn, W1VFB made the presentation to Carl Aveni, N1FY, who is Eastern MA ARRL Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator, and one of the primary SKYWARN operators at the Taunton SKYWARN ARC.

“I have found in the past that identification of a service or entity is essential to getting the message out as to what we do as amateur radio operators,” remarked Glynn. “When clubs or operations identify who they are, people will stop and ask about who and what we are and when you don’t they will tend to look and walk on by.”

Cape Ann ARA Morse Code Class Begins on Feb. 5

Cape Ann ARA logoThe Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association will conduct a Morse code class beginning Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 9 AM until 12 noon, according to CAARA Clerk Dean Burgess, KB1PGH.

Burgess says that the class will be led by CAARA member Rick Maybury, WZ1B. The class will run throughout the month of February at the CAARA club house, 6 Stanwood Street, in Gloucester. CAARA has held successful Morse code classes in the past.

Framingham Flea Market Is “ARRL Approved”

Framingham ARA 75h anniversary logoARRL Convention Program Manager Gail Iannone, has notified Framingham Amateur Radio Association Director Beverly Lees, N1LOO that FARA’s spring flea market on April 3, 2011 has been designated an “ARRL Approved” hamfest. New England Division Director Tom Frenaye, K1KI made the approval.

The club is encouraged to prominently display the ARRL diamond in its emails, advertisements, and other program material. In return, the League makes available to approved hamfests at low- or no-cost brochures, hanging and standing banners, tabletop displays, table throws, and other giveaways (pens, magnets and stickers). I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Jeremy Breef-Pilz, KB1REQ as the new ARRL Assistant Section Manager for Youth Activities. Breef-Pilz replaces Jason Sample, KB1PQB, who officially tendered his resignation, citing time constraints.

Jeremy Breef-Pilz is active on the HF and VHF bands. He’s involved in public service, SKYWARN, and Eastern Massachusetts ARES. In addition, KB1REQ is a member of the Whitman Amateur Radio Club and the Mansfield Emergency Management Agency.

Cape & Islands ARES Winter Exercise, Jan. 22, 2011

The Cape and Islands ARES district will hold a winter exercise on Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 10 AM to 12 PM.

According to Cape and Islands District Emergency Coordinator Frank O’Laughlin, WQ1O, the group will set up an outside field station and operate on 2 meter FM, 6M repeater, FM and SSB. They will also operate on 3.925 and 7.232 MHz using NVIS.

South Shore Hospital ARC Established

South Shore Hospital ARC meeting, Dec. 11, 2010 A new Amateur Radio Club has been established at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. A driving force behind the club’s formation was employee John O’Neill, KB1QEM. O’Neill helped the hospital specify what equipment to purchase and include in a hospital “Go Kit”, funded from a homeland security grant. The grant was secured thanks to the efforts of Joan Cooper-Zack, R.N., KB1UBZ, who serves as the hospital’s Emergency Preparedness Manager. ARES District Emergency Coordinator Carl Aveni, N1FY also assisted in educating the group about the various services available through Amateur Radio and ARES.

Employees, volunteers, and friends of the hospital met for the first meeting of the South Shore Hospital Amateur Radio Club (W1SSH) on December 11, 2010. Eighteen people were present. Photo ID badges were issued, and a presentation was given by Jim Tovet, W1JT on packet radio. Tovet demonstrated how amateurs at the hospital could send and receive text messages with other packet terminals and PBBSes outside of the area. Tovel also demonstrated Winlink. A test message goint to one of the hospital officials was received in the form of an email that originated as an amateur radio packet message.

A January meeting is planned that will feature a talk about the National Traffic System and NTS radiograms as a part of an ongoing training program. Already, an area-wide simplex test was conducted to test radio coverage. Interestingly, the test revealed de-sensitization problems caused by the hospital’s paging transmitter.

The formation of the club, and implementation of the training program at South Shore Hospital has been such a success that KB1UBZ and KB1QEM have been approached by other local health care institutions who are also interested in developing similar programs.

KB1QEM says there are several parts of the country where hams have joined their resources together to form radio networks for area hospitals. “It would be a tremendous asset for area institutions to be able to communicate with each other on a predefined network of simplex frequencies and repeaters. I have my sites set for the creation of a system along those lines as we and other hospitals in the area get our groups established.”

Also attributing to the success of the club’s formation was an Amateur Radio Technician Class sponsored by both the South Shore Hospital and the Whitman Amateur Radio Club. Sessions were held on two Saturdays, using classroom facilities at South Shore Hospital. The class resulted in six hospital employees receiving their licenses, which brought the total of licensed employees to eight. Additionally, several orientation sessions were held to educate area ham volunteers with the South Shore Hospital volunteer program, policies, and culture.

Radio equipment purchased includes a Yaesu FT-8800 VHF/UHF transceiver, a Yaesu FT-450 AT HF transceiver, a Kantronics KAM XL TNC, a 35-amp Samlex power supply, and a Yaesu FT-60R handheld. The items are housed in a case with a removable platform, ready to be used as a base station. A dual-band 2-Meter/70 cm antenna and HF antenna for base station use was also purchased. The antennas have been installed on the hospital roof, and coax lines routed inside the hospital.

Foundation for Amateur Radio Scholarships Now Available for 2011-2012

Foundation for Amateur Radio logo“The non-profit Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR) is now accepting applications for 48 scholarships for the academic year 2011-2012 to assist radio amateurs pursuing higher education. FAR fully funds two of scholarships and administers 46 others without cost on behalf of various club and individual donors. Amateur Radio licensees pursuing a full-time course of study beyond high school and accepted by or enrolled in an accredited university, college or technical school are eligible to apply. Scholarship grants range from $500 to $5000, and preference in some cases goes to applicants living in particular geographical areas or pursuing certain studies. Non-US residents are eligible to apply for some of the scholarships.”
