Norton Halloween Parade, October 28, 2018
Ray Cord, K2TGX, writes on the Sturdy Memorial Hospital ARC list:
Just a reminder to those who signed up or those who now want to help stage the Annual Norton Halloween Parade.
We will meet this Sunday October 28th at 10:30 AM in the Parking lot behind the Oasis Night Club on Pleasant St at the Norton Attleboro Line. The parade steps off at Noon and goes down Route 123 to Saint Mary’s Church. We should be done by 1:00PM
Uniform of the day is [high visibility] jackets or vests, baseball cap, and comfortable shoes.
Hams will use 147.42 direct, no tone; all others, FRS Channel 4, no tone.
Hope to see you all there.
Volunteers Requested, PART of Westford Pumpkin Patrol, October 31, 2018
Terry Stader, KA8SCP, writes on the PART of Westford mailing list:
A couple of weeks ago I thought it was time to start thinking about our annual Pumpkin Patrol on Halloween Night in Westford. Well, it is next week and I am still looking for a few more volunteers!
As we have done for many years, PART provides additional eyes and ears around our cemeteries and public buildings. We are looking for some hams to watch for tricksters and let us know (NCS is stationed at Police HQ) when there are issues so we can get a police officer dispatched if necessary.
Halloween Night is next week, Wednesday October 31st. Our Pumpkin Patrol runs from 5:45 until 10 PM. but we’ve been known to be released by 9:00 PM if the weather is cool and activity on the street low. You do not have to be there for the entire event. Some folks have come in for the 2nd half of the evening, after 8 when Trick or Treat official hours are over.
We’d love to have you join our crew. Got any questions, drop me a note.
W1HFN Fox Deployed in Littleton, October 20, 2018
Barry Fox, W1HFN, writes on the fox hunting list:
The W1HFN fox was deployed at the Hartwell Family Memorial Preserve (in Littleton) at 10:30 AM Sat 20 Oct, see link:
https://
The fox broadcasts continually on 146.565 with a 20 second voice ID every minute. The battery pack is freshly charged and should last 4 1/2 days.
Happy hunting!
KC1DKY Fox Deployed in Billerica, October 19, 2018
Nicholas J. Mollo, KC1DKY, writes on the fox hunter list on October 19, 2018 at 1:07 PM:
With the crisp autumn air and changing leaves, what a great time to get out on a trail and find a fox! The KC1DKY fox is out in Billerica on conservation and recreation land. It’s a nice quarter of a mile walk from the parking location, if you go to the right trail head. The fox is less than 50 feet from the trail. Fox frequency is 146.565 MHz. Transmit a DTMF tone of 1 to activate the fox. It will jingle for 30 seconds and be quiet for 15 seconds. This will repeat for 20 minutes. It should be available until middle next week. If you happen to be in the right location and it does not active, try transmitting a few # tones, but only if you are in the correct general area and still cannot seem to turn it on.
Good luck!

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2018
It seems at this writing that summer has abruptly come to an end and winter has begun. Not only has the temperature changed, but so has propagation affecting communication on the traffic nets. I suspect we will face challenges on the HF nets as we have the past few winters as we dip further into the solar minimum. However Massachusetts traffic handlers are up to the challenge and we will perservere. If anyone is capable of getting on 160 meters, we will surely appreciate your help there.
Of particular note, at our NTS Forum at Boxboro in September, Bill Mann W1KX, manager of the cycle 4 (evening) First Region Net (1RN) mentioned his desire to step down as manager after serving for the past seven years. Eric Wilhelm W1RVY, frequent participant of our MARI CW section net and 1RN CW net, has offered to take leadership of 1RN. Eric is well qualified and will take over effective November 1 2018. Congrats and many thanks to Eric. We look forward to working with you.
I would also like to mention that Greg KC1CIC gave a very informative presentation on digital message handling at Boxboro, and recently presented this same program via Skype to a club in Western Mass. Many thanks to Greg for all his efforts and expertise. If any other clubs are interested in learning more about this very relavant subject let Greg know. Training in general message handling is also available by contacting your Section Traffic Manager.
Attached below is the September traffic report for the combined sections of East and West Mass.

After serving as manager of the First Region Net Cycle 4 (1RN) since 2011 , Bill Mann W1KX of Monmouth ME is stepping down. Bill took over following the passing of W1UD and has done a tremendous job of keeping the net active, and we are very grateful to Bill for all he has done for NTS. We expect to see him continue as a regular net participant, but Eric Wilhelm W1RVY of Southbridge MA has volunteered to assume net leadership and will take over as manager effective November 1, 2018. Eric has been a regular participant on both Massachusetts Rhode Island (MARI) CW net and Central Mass 2 Meter net (CM2MN) as well as 1RN and we look forward to his leadership. Thanks to Eric for stepping up.

YCCC members Plan DXpedition to HQ for ARRL DX SSB
Three YCCC members will operate on Roatan Island (NA-057) for the ARRL DX SSB contest in February, 2019.
“This will be a [Multi-operator, Multi-transmitter] operation, probably as HQ9X,” writes Paul Young, K1XM. He, along with Charlotte Richardson, KQ1F, and Marty Sullaway, KC1CWF, will make the trek to the Caribbean island, situated 40 miles off the northern coast of Honduras. They’re looking for one more operator.
Paul plans to combine his DX/contesting with a few days of scuba diving. “The villa is a nice place and suitable for non-hams,” he writes.
Harvard Wireless Club Announces CubeSat Collaboration
The Harvard Wireless Club is working with another Harvard student organization, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, to develop a CubeSat for launch.
“We’re excited to announce a collaboration with [the Harvard chapter of ] SEDS to develop the communications systems for a Cubesat they plan on launching in June,” writes HWC President Benjamin, K7JS.
“To get ready in time, we’re going to be having a special meeting next Thursday, October 17 at 8 PM at 6 Linden just for the members of the club interested in developing the satellite comms systems. This is going to be an awesome project and I can’t wait to work on it.”
Lee invites those interested in working on the project to contact him.
YuKanRun Ocean View 5K and Half Marathon, Ipswich, November 4, 2018
Christopher Winczewski, K1TAT, writes on the CAARA list:
CAARA has a great public service team. Come out and have some fun with us.
You are using amateur radio to provide a needed public service to ensure the safety and smooth running of a public event in local communities.
I would, but I do not have a radio. No excuse, we have loaner radio’s available with a mag mount that will work in your car just by just plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket. We have loaner hand held radios as well!
I don’t have transportation. No excuse, we will pick you up and drop you off at your house. I do not have the time to spare for a whole race. Well, you can commit to a time slot, for just two hours. We will bend over backwards to get you to participate.
We are looking for operators to staff the YuKanRun Ocean View 5K & Half Marathon on Thursday, November 4th in Ipswich. Please be on location at your Check Point by 8:00 for a 8:30 AM start. Start, finish at Ipswich High School, 134 High Street, Ipswich, MA 01938.
Please let me know if you can staff a communications check-point for the event by November 2nd so I can plan staffing positions for the event.
Please let us know what type of equipment you plan to use ( mobile; HT; ¼-wave mag mount; rubber duck, etc.) so we have a better idea of where to locate you along the event course per the potential of your equipment.
The course will be open and supported by CAARA for four hours. Runner safety is everyone’s top priority. Local EMT crews and ambulances will be available for three hours to help.
Thank you in advance for your participation!
Harvard Wireless Club QRV in School Club Roundup
Bill Collins, W1PL, writes on the Harvard Wireless Club mailing list:
The School Club Roundup will run [October 15] from Monday at 9 AM until [October 19] at 8 PM. We will announce through this website when we are operating. I plan on operating Monday 9 or 10 AM to 2 PM. If anybody wants to stop by during our operation the main operator will leave their contact information on this list. Stop by, make at least one contact, and you will be in the log as representing Harvard in this contest, and also receive a certificate of participation. Not sure about Tuesday, but Wednesday and Thursday, President Benjamin Lee should be on.
Station power will be left on throughout the contest, except for the antenna switch turned off and the linear amplifier power turned off (you may have to reboot the computer in the morning).
Most action is usually on 20 meters during the day, at night, 40 meters. Power should be kept down to 500 watts or less. Antenna: Europe might be good in the AM (70 degrees east), will fade in the afternoon. Check 15 and 10 meters periodically, as there *might* be some action there. In the afternoon, I suggest to point 270 degrees west. From Noon to 4 PM there may be 15, 10 meter openings to the west coast. After the sun sets (6 PM), 10 and 15 will be dead, and 20 will follow shortly. Any ops after this, use the 40/80 antenna, keeping the power down 300/350 watts or so.
Hope to see you there!
Falmouth ARA QRV for JOTA
The Falmouth Amateur Radio Association will participate in the 61st annual Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) on Saturday, October 20, 2018. The JOTA event will occur at Falmouth’s Gus Canty Recreation Center at 790 Main Street, from 10 AM-5 PM.
FARA members hope to show all attendees (specifically any Scout–boy or girl) what ham radio has to offer and get them on the air.
Volunteers are needed to operate several stations as demos and to get folks on the air:
- CW station
- HF voice (SSB)
- Digital (likely PSK31) with a big screen
- 2m HT and/or mobile
For more information, visit http://www.falara.org/announcements/jamboreeontheairjotaoctober20.

Don Rosinha, WA1BXY, writes on the SEMARA mailing list:
This Sunday (October 14) we will start and hopefully finish the build of the new TH-11DX beam and 40-meter rotatable dipole that’s replacing the log periodic array on the tower. Anyone willing to lend a hand would be great. [We’re] in need of two sets of saw horses. Thanks in advance.
Sturdy Memorial Hospital ARC to Commemorate 40th Anniversary
Sturdy Memorial Hospital ARC members will operate special event station W1S to commemorate the club’s 40th anniversary on November 10, 2018 from 11 AM-10 PM and November 11, 2018 from 11 AM-5 PM. Everyone is welcome to operate from the club station.
“Please try to attend this meeting to volunteer your time to operate,” writes club secretary Ray Cord, K2TGX. “Even if you are a Tech we will have a General or Extra to work with you. It is not a high pressure contest. We are just making contacts to celebrate our 40-year history. This is a great learning experience for HF operating. If you absolutely can’t make the [October 16] meeting please email me with the hours that you can operate.”
The club was formed in the aftermath of the Blizzard of 1978, when members with Sturdy Memorial Hospital served their community with emergency communications.
UPDATE: See https://www.qrz.com/db/w1s for times/modes of operation.
MARS Members To Support Defense Department Radio Comms Readiness Exercise
Tom Kinahan, N1CPE, writes:
As part of this COMEX, MARS members will reach out to amateur radio operators (on October 24-26) for any information on real life infrastructure failures. We have been practicing this sort of reporting as part of both Western and Eastern Mass ARES nets. If there are any know local failures of infrastructure, defined as Power, Water, Medical, Sanitation, Communications or Transportation, just let the MARS operator know with information on your county name, or your zip code (which is easy to determine county name with).
MARS operators will use non-internet connected VHF/UHF repeaters as well as 60 meter channel 1 in our area, to gather these reports.
MARS stations will be operating from Oct 22-26, but the participation of Amateur Radio operators is expected on Oct 24-26.
Amateur Radio operators are asked to monitor 60-meter channel 1 (5,330.5 kHz, USB) at 0001 UTC (8:01 PM ET) on October 24, for a high-power broadcast of updated information regarding this exercise and how the Amateur Radio community can participate.
Contact Tom Kinahan, N1CPE, with any questions.
