Ten SKYWARN training sessions have been scheduled throughout New England for 2005. (An eleventh will be added in July.) The information has been posted on the Eastern MA ARES web site.

Wireless & Steam Museum Joint Club Visit Planned
The Framingham Amateur Radio Association has announced that plans are underway for a joint trip with the Boston Amateur Radio Club to visit the New England Wireless and Steam Museum in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
“We are tentatively looking at either Saturday, June 4 or 11,” writes FARA’s Vice President Gordy Bello, K1GB. “After the visit we may stop for a bite at a reasonably-priced restaurant.”
According to the museum’s web site, the wireless building “shows the span of electric communication from telegraph to TV. It features keys, sounders, crystal sets, tubes, microphones, ocean cable instruments, spark transmitters, detectors, an 1881 Dolbear receiver, an 1899 Marconi coherer, and a jigger and spark set exactly like the one used on to call for help on the Titanic in 1912.”

MARS Exercise—Request ARES/NTS Support
There will be a MARS Exercise on Saturday April 9th, 2005. This exercise is being held for MARS stations to practice gathering tactical and formal message traffic and have that traffic turned into “EEI’s” or Essential Elements of Information.
On Saturday April 9th, Liaison frequencies that will be utilized for the MARS Emergency Exercise will be 7243 during the Day, 3943 in the evening along with nets on the 146.97-Paxton Repeater at 10 AM, 2 PM, and 6 PM. This information was given through a NTS RACES Traffic Message written by Bob Mims, Region II RACES Radio Officer and Southern New England Army MARS Coordinator.
This is an opportunity for Eastern Massachusetts ARES and NTS to continue its partnership and cooperation with MARS. Recently, the ARRL has expanded its partnership with MARS and we are continuing what the national organization would like to see completed across the country. Please support the exercise and bring some tactical and formal traffic that MARS can transfer into EEI’s for their exercise.Respectfully Submitted,

SKYWARN Training Schedule Updated
The SKYWARN Training Schedule for 2005 has been updated. There are a total of 10 SKYWARN Training sessions now scheduled across Southern New England. This includes three sessions in Eastern Massachusetts. Those sessions are in Westford, Wilmington and Brockton. The complete schedule can be viewed at http://users.rcn.com/rmacedo/trsched.htm

Combined RACES, ARES, SKYWARN Hurricane Drill Planned, June 6
MRAS (Massachusetts RACES ARES SKYWARN) leaders have announced a state-wide hurricane drill to be held on the evening of June 6, 2005.
“This drill has typically been in Region II only but will be done statewide [with approval] by Dave Martineau at MA Emergency Management Agency Headquarters,” writes Eastern MA Section Emergency Coordinator Rob Macedo, KD1CY.
Macedo hopes to involve the VoIP Hurricane Preparation Net and the National Hurricane Center in the exercise. “The National Weather Service will be staffed and the hope is to staff all typical ARES stations as would normally be done for an ARES Exercise/hurricane situation.”
According to MA State RACES Officer Tom Kinahan, N1CPE, “All participants are requested to attend a briefing at the State Emergency Operations Center in Framingham on May 14 at 10 AM.”
Further details will be worked out by the MRAS leadership team over the next few weeks. Please monitor the Eastern MA ARES web site for additional updates.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA

USS Salem RC: “Very Few Volunteers” At Present
Bill O Hara, N1EY, writes:
We need people to help out the Scouting Program. We have very few volunteers. I have only three persons scheduled including myself. Radio Room 5 shall be open at the bare minimum on April 9th.
Anyone welcome to checking out the radio room and its operations should come by on the 9th. Pi K1RV shall be giving tours.
We require help every weekend. This should not be news to any club members. I shouldn’t even have to put an email in the manner that JC did every week.
I think that people should hold themselves accountable and be responsible. Other individuals arrive every week and work to man other stations such as CIC, sickbay, gunnery, engine rooms, or act as tour guides.
If we are truly interested in maintaining this ship, then people should be showing up.

This is the primary source of revenue to pay for badly needed repairs to the ship. Few club members are helping out. W1BT works very hard and is at the ship many times during the week to keep the juice running.
We also have not handled other club tasks such as getting the transmitters in RR 2 up to sniff and scratch standards. Nor we have done anything like getting a working teletype circuit.

Do you have a two meter hand held radio? Six hours of time? On Sunday May 1st, we can use your help to support the 40,000 walkers participating in the Walk for Hunger. Project Bread will be depending on the skills of hams to tie together the walk coordinators, volunteers and managers. The twenty mile route starts in Boston, goes out to Newton, continues through Watertown and then back to Boston Common. This is the major fund raising event for Project Bread which provides assistance to nearly 400 feeding agencies across the Commonwealth. Last year just over $3 million was raised thanks in part to our efforts.

Antenna Coming For Belmont HAMsters
The first-grade “HAMsters” at the Winn Brook school in Belmont will soon have a working antenna for a shack in their classroom, according to their teacher, Donna LaRoche.
LaRoche has received invaluable assistance with the project from Chuck Counselman, W1HIS. (See “The Next Generation of CW Operators”.) “[W1HIS] has met with our principal, the custodian, head of buildings and grounds, and even the school electrician.”
According to LaRoche, “We now have a coax cable installed from the classroom to the roof. We are waiting for the school department authorities to bless an antenna up there. [Chuck] is planning a doublet, 70 feet long, fed with 450 ohm line. There will be a balun between the line and the coax. This will be our antenna for 7 MHz and up.” LaRoche isn’t concerned with the lack of 80 meter coverage. “The rig will only be used during the day and 80 meters is not very interesting in the middle of the day.”
“The HAMsters and I are learning CW together!” adds LaRoche. “We practice every day after lunch for twenty minutes. They are becoming very proficient.”
LaRoche, who is a member of the Framingham Amateur Radio Association, earned her ham ticket, KB1LWY, at a Boston ARC VE session in January, 2005. She made her first QSO on February 25, operating from W1AW. Appropriately, it was with Chuck, W1HIS. “Boy, was I excited!” Donna exclaims.

Eastern MA To Participate In Homeland Security’s TOPOFF 3
Eastern MA ARES members will participate in the upcoming TOPOFF 3 exercise sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security on April 4, according to Eastern MA Section Emergency Coordinator Rob Macedo, KD1CY.
The TOPOFF 3 scenario will depict a complex terrorist campaign beginning in Connecticut and New Jersey and leading to national and international response that will include Canada, where the exercise will be known as “TRIPLE PLAY,” and the United Kingdom, where it will be called “ATLANTIC BLUE.”
“We are sending an ARESMAT team of 4 for the TOPOFF exercise […] at the request of Connecticut ARES and Connecticut ARES Section Emergency Coordinator, Chuck Rexroad, AB1CR,” writes Macedo. “The main client that Connecticut ARES will be serving is the Red Cross. At the time of the meeting, more Amateurs were needed but after the meeting AB1CR stated that they had all the assignments filled.”

YI9DXX Gateway Plans “Hit A Snag”
Plans to establish an internet gateway-accessible remote base in Iraq have hit a snag, according to local amateur Keith Lamonica, W7DXX. (See YI9 Internet Gateway Close to Reality.)
“[The] Voice of America did not come through on their promise to ship the equipment and it is still in Washington, D.C.,” writes Lamonica. “We tried the Army but they can’t help either. I have asked one of our control operators who works for ABC in D.C. to see if they can help.”
The Easton, MA amateur announced plans for the remote base system in Iraq almost six months ago. W7DXX obtained the call sign YI9DXX and identified a location to house the installation. Lamonica also recruited willing Iraqi amateurs to help maintain the remote base.
