UP FRONT
WELCOME NEW ASMs: Jim, K1IR and Bruce, N9JBT
It is a pleasure to announce the appointments of Jim Idelson, K1IR, and
Bruce Tinkler, N9JBT to the role of Assistant Section Manager (ASM).
Both are already making significant contributions to the advancement of
Amateur Radio.
Jim, K1IR, is a lifelong ham with interests cutting across many aspects
of the hobby. He enjoys technical experimentation; he hosts a 2-meter
DMR repeater at his QTH in Sudbury; he is an active HF contester. Most
recently Jim has turned his attention to advancing tower safety, by
delivering presentations at the Boxboro Convention, NEAR-Fest and local

Bruce, N9JBT has been active over the years in Colonial Wireless
Association, Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston, Walk for Hunger, Boston
Marathon, Clay Center Observatory ARC, New England Amateur Radio, and
Sci Tech Amateur Radio Society at New England Sci Tech. Bruce is
currently station manager for W1STR and an amateur radio mentor. His
volunteer activities focus on public outreach, STEM education and public

Bruce brings a focus on STEM education, Science and Astronomy with a
youth and family focus at the New England Sci-Tech center. Jim has
chosen to focus on communications; he runs his own company focused on
helping large companies get the most out of modern communication tools.
Both understand amateur radio and its history from a broad perspective
and bring expertise to the section leadership valuable in promoting
Amateur Radio to future generations.

CAPE COD AMATEURS PROVIDE COMMUNICATIONS FOR THE 2019 CAPE COD MARATHON
IN FALMOUTH
Approximately 30 Cape Cod amateurs provided communications for the
annual Cape Cod Marathon and Half Marathon in Falmouth on October 26-27,
2019. The premiere event is limited to 1,200 participants and serves as
a qualifying race for the BAA Boston Marathon.
“The weather was excellent for running on Saturday, but a completely
different story for the full marathon on Sunday,” writes Falmouth
Amateur Radio Association President and Communications Coordinator Barry
Hutchinson, KB1TLR. “With strong winds and heavy rains along
Falmouth’s coastline both runners and radio operators were put to the
test.”
Hutchinson reports that “banners for the Barnstable Amateur Radio
Club, FARA, and the new ARRL radio communications banner were all
displayed along the finish line gates. “This created many positive
comments about amateur radio.”
Amateur radio volunteers kept race officials abreast of runners who
dropped out, allowing them to be picked up by the “Tired Runner
Vans” or transferred to the medical tent. KB1TLR received praise from
the Marathon staff which he passed it along to his team. “It was an
excellent team to work with.”

ANTENNA RAISING IN STYLE AT NEW ENGLAND SCI-TECH AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY
Members of New England Sci-Tech Amateur Radio Society (STARS) held an
antenna-raising party to erect an 80-meter antenna on Saturday, October
26, 2019. Members included: Ted, W1OG; Bill, N1WEN; Leandra, AF1R; Alex,
KB1SSN; Stu, W1SHS; Barbara, KC1KGS; Dan, W1DAN; Jeremy, KB1REQ; Bob,
K5TEC; and Kenneth, KC1AHI.
According to Sci-Tech’s Bob Phinney, K5TEC, “A lot of tree limbs had
to be cleared to make room for antenna wires. Ted and Alex did most of
the work from the bucket lift while the rest of us were ground crew. It
was especially helpful to have Bill, Leandra, Alex, and Jeremy helping
up to the end, after dark, with the flagpole. And to Alex for bravely
running the bucket lift to the top of the flagpole in the dark. “
KB1REQ used the antenna to make contacts in the CQ World Wide contest
and reports the antenna is working well.
According to Bob, the group still needs help in creating the spring and
weight systems at the bottom “to allow for the swaying trees.” Bob
also thanked KM1NDY for acquiring the antenna and coax.

UNIQUE RADIOGRAM “TRAFFIC” HITS THE EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS NETS
Traffic handlers on the Eastern Massachusetts section nets received some
unique messages for relay and delivery this past month. Amateurs who
provided public service communications for the Head of the Charles
Regatta in Cambridge and Boston were thanked via NTS radiogram for their
efforts by amateur coordinator Jeff Arnold, K1EMS. The book traffic was
sent over several evenings to approximately 82 amateurs living in
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.

We understand it’s difficult to recruit and retain a webmaster for
your club. In fact, some clubs’ web sites have fallen into disrepair.
That’s why we’re excited to offer this new service to ARRL

Eric, W1RVY, manager of 1RN Cycle 4, the evening CW net reports that in
October there were 60 sessions, 67 pieces of traffic handled and 179
check-ins.
FIRST REGION NET (FRN) REPORT (SSB)
Betsey, K1EIC, manager of FRN Cycle 2, the daytime SSB net reports that
in October there were 62 sessions, 104 pieces of traffic handled and 258
check-ins.
