AUGUST 2012 SECTION NEWS

New England’s premiere ham radio event, the ARRL New England Division
Convention in Boxboro, is just around the corner. Thousands of Amateurs
will flock to Boxboro on August 24-26, 2012 – a testament to the
planning and hard work that has gone into ensuring that Boxboro 2012
will be the biggest and best ever.

Boxboro has it all: a robust outdoor flea market, a highly successful
indoor commercial vendor exhibit, volunteer exam sessions, captivating
talks and presentations, and not one—but TWO banquets–the DXCC and
Grand Banquets on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. Special
events station W1A will be QRV for you to see and operate.

Presentations and talks will cover a wide range of interests and
specialties: contesting, QRP, area repeater owners working session,
SKYWARN, AM, introduction to antennas, and much, much more. A full
schedule can be downloaded at <http://tinyurl.com/bvoths5>.

If you haven’t pre-ordered your admission and banquet tickets yet,
cruise over to <http://boxboro.org>. Proceeds from ticket and banquet
sales helps support the ARRL Foundation scholarship program.

An important test of the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC 2014)
project was conducted in New England on July 14-15 during the recent
IARU Competition. The goal of the “dry run” was to test the
effectiveness of the operating locations by volunteer contest operators
and also, setup and installation of antennas by dedicated technical
crews.

“Despite the very hot weather it all seems to have gone very well,”
remarked Tom Frenaye, K1KI, WRTC 2014 Secretary. “All stations were on
the air. We’re getting lots of feedback on things we should look at
improving.”

Thirteen stations were established along the I-495 corridor in Eastern
and Western Massachusetts, in the towns of Pepperell, Leominster,
Devens, Wrentham, Medfield, Mansfield, and Plymouth/South Carver.

“We will have a similar test in 2013, likely with twice as many
stations,” K1KI added. “In 2014 we plan to field the full 59 stations
— plus spares — and host a whole bunch of contesters from around the
world.”

For more information, visit <http://wrtc2014.org>.

The 146.685 Plymouth repeater will be out of commission for the first
week of August for general repairs.

The Genesis ARS will sponsor a special event station and display on
September 2 for Family Fun Day at the Plymouth Airport. In addition to
operating HF and VHF radios, club members will distribute educational
materials to the public. If you can help, contact KB1SRO.

MITRE-Bedford ARC conducted a VE session on July 17.

Don’t miss the Southeastern MA ARA Tailgate Flea Market on September 9
at the SEMARA clubhouse in South Dartmouth. For full details, go to <

This SM, along with ACC Bo Budinger, WA1QYM presented on the Eastern MA
ARRL field organization at the Falmouth ARA meeting on July 26.

SEC KD1CY and ASEC N1FY co-presented at a SKYWARN training class
recently at ARRL Headquarters in Newington.

Whitman ARC members are gearing up for the big special events station
operation, NN1MF, and exhibit at the Marshfield Fair from August 17-26.
They’re looking for help from area hams who wish to participate. Those
who sign up for one or more four-hour shifts will receive a free
vehicle and personal pass. To volunteer, contact N1FRE at
<wf.hayden@verizon.net>.

NE1RD operated on Lovell Island in Boston Harbor (NA-148) on 17 through
10 meters on July 14-15 and 28-29. If you snagged a QSO with Scott, you
can QSL him at his home address, LoTW, eQSL, or ClubLog.

NI1X volunteered for fox duties at a recent South Shore fox hunt on
July 7. KB1TEH found Bruce first. Bruce was hiding behind the
Bridgewater Library. The team of KB1MOC and Bob Brown (SWL) captured
second place.

K1RV is trying to promote interest in an operation from the Scituate
Lighthouse parking lot in conjunction with International
Lighthouse-Lightship Week August 1-8. Pi says there will be “lots of
visitors during Scituate Heritage Days.”

WQ1O conducted a mini-Regional shelter exercise in Sandwich on July 28.
According to Frank, there was good representation on the part of Red
Cross and other partner agencies.

We had a great Eastern MA turnout at the recent New England Division
Cabinet Meeting in Boxboro last month. At least eight affiliated clubs
from the section were represented.

KB1PGH is recruiting a few more hams to assist with the Essex Youth
Triathlon on August 11. Dean says the Cape Ann ARA has provided
communications support for this event for the past two years.

MARI traffic handlers led the pack with the highest rep percentage to
1RN Cycles 3 and 4, according to statistics from 1RN Manager W1KX.

Framingham ARA members plan to hoist a few cold 807s at the Summertime
FARA Night Out on August 12 at the British Beer Company. Interested
“hoisters” should RSVP to Gordy, K1GB.

Barnstable ARC members installed a new Telewave folded dipole array at
the Dennis 146.955 repeater site on July 7. The operation took over
eight hours to complete. The antenna system weights 300 lbs. and stands
39 feet tall. The crew of nine had to contend with temperatures in
mid-80s with 91 percent relative humidity! Photos and story at
<http://tinyurl.com/cvzbof2>. Thanks, Barnstable ARC.

Cape and Islands DEC WQ1O posted an informative video on YouTube
demonstrating the use of the Narrow Band Emergency Message System. WQ1O
says it’s a great tool for emergency use. With it you can send ICS
forms, radiograms–even CSV files—to many stations, or
point-to-point. See Frank’s video at <http://tinyurl.com/cfs2um4>.

A tiny Japanese micro-satellite will soon be writing Morse messages in
the sky: <http://tinyurl.com/c7dfd4h>.

From the “What-The-Heck-Was-That?!” Department: K1NS was driving in
Walpole recently. “I passed this car, which I thought had an amazing
ham microwave/radome/antenna on the roof. But of course it turned out
to be a Google Street View camera car. Wow! First one I’d ever seen.
What a device.” You can see Bill’s photo of the G-mobile at

TRAFFIC TIPS: MESSAGE DELIVERY

To those who are new to message handling, delivering messages is one of the more important aspects of traffic handling since it is an interface between amateur radio and the general public, educating people on the public service ham radio provides.  Messages to other hams also provide an opportunity to introduce message handling and traffic nets to those who may not be familiar with this aspect of our hobby.  It is also fun, meeting new people, sharing messages to them from family, friends and other hams around the country, and in the case of other hams, perhaps talking with them about their interests in the hobby as well as yours.  This is a skill however, one that improves and becomes more comfortable with practice.

Begin by making sure you copied the message accurately, requesting fills as needed and making sure the  check in the preamble matches the number of words in the text.

When calling introduce yourself as a ham radio operator with a radiogram for (addee) from (name in signature) in (place of origin).  This helps them to know you are not a telemarketer.  You might explain that the message is sent as a free public service so they know you’re not going to ask for money.  If you have ascertained that you are speaking with the addee, go on to read the message.  If the addee is not home ask the person answering if they wish to copy the message or when would be a good time to call back.  If you get an answer machine leave your name and phone number and a brief explanation why you are calling and that you will call back.  Some will call you back.  If you don’t hear back try again another time.  If after three tries you still get no response, send a service message to the originator.  This will be covered later.

When delivering a message you will only read the text and signature.  Remember most people will not know about arl numbered radiograms, so make sure you are prepared to read the corresponding text for the specific arl number.  (See nts.ema.arrl.org for list of these texts)  Any use of the initial “x” corresponds to a period and the word “query” represents a question mark, so these are generally not read in the text.  Most folks are very appreciative of the messages we deliver.  However you may get someone on a bad day who will react accordingly.  Remember we are ambassadors for amateur radio and conduct yourself accordingly.

Notice any handling instructions (HX’s in the preamble).  If there is an HXC send originator a radiogram with date and time of delivery.  If there is an HXE, attempt to get a reply to send back to the sender.  An HXF followed by a number means hold message for delivery until  that date.  If a message is undeliverable send a service message back to originator explaining reason for non delivery.  If phone number is incorrect, disconnected or not in service, include number you called in the text of your service message since sometimes phone numbers you received may have been garbled along the way.

Sound complicated?  It really is not.  The important thing is to relax and have fun, and know that you are getting practice in performing a public service

Notes from the Section Traffic Manager

Greetings Eastern Mass traffic handlers,

It is with great sadness that we have lost a fellow traffic handler and friend in Gil Follett W1GMF.  He will definitely be missed.  Gil’s passing has not only left us without that booming voice on the nets and a lot of traffic, but he was also sysop for the N1XTB BBS, our local digital outlet for traffic and helped maintain the NTS page on the ema.arrl.org website.  Phil N1XTB has agreed to keep the BBS operational for our use, and Loren N1IQI, who has helped keep us busy with his traffic, has also, along with K1YCQ and N1LUM, been monitoring the BBS for traffic to make sure it gets cleared.  Thanks to all you folks and others who take traffic from the BBS for delivery.  It is much appreciated.

Your STM is about to learn how to post information on the website, so you can look for the monthly report and any other traffic notes which I hope to put up there.  If anyone has any traffic related articles they would like to see posted there please let me know.

It is great to see all the new folks checking into both the two meter nets, taking traffic and taking on net control.  Just a reminder that not only does the 8:00 net meet daily on the Boston repeater, but Heavy Hitters meets regularly at 10 on the Minuteman linked repeaters Monday, Wednesday and Friday as well as Tuesday and Thursday when  NCS is available.  Dave N1LUM has been running most nets along with Scott N1SGB on Wednesdays.  This net has been growing, but I’m sure Dave would appreciate help with NCS duties.

We have an Eastern Mass section net which currently meets Monday through Friday at 5:30 on 3918 Khz.  Participation on this net has not been very good.  Currently this is our only section net, and liaises with the region nets to get traffic beyond the section.  Is anyone on HF who could help out with this net?  Please see Jim N1LKJ or KW1U for more information.  If we had more participation we would like to return to seven days a week.

Anyone interested in CW traffic handling?  We have had no CW section net for awhile now due to lack of participation.  There is an excellent CW training net and I would be happy to provide more information about that to anyone interested.  Not feeling good about your CW skills?  I would be glad to get on the air for some code practice.  I haven’t tried CW on two meters, but can set up some practice time on HF if anyone is interested.

Enough for now, but see you on the nets.  Thanks again to all for your participation.

73, Marcia KW1U, STM EMA Section

Reminder: Monthly Eastern Massachusetts ARES Net for March 2012

Hello to all…

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for March is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for March is Monday March 5th, 2012, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening. For frequencies that will be linked into the ARES Net on the MMRA Network, please see the following link from the MMRA web site and the repeaters that will be linked in will be through Hub 1:

http://www.mmra.org/repeaters/map.html

In addition, if the Echo-IRLP node on the MMRA hub is available, we will likely link that to the New England Reflector system on IRLP 9123/Echolink Conference *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123.

Make this first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.

We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org

Thanks for your continued support of ARES!

Respectfully Submitted,
