Preparedness Efforts Including Eastern Mass ARES Web Site Updates

Hello to all….

With September being National Preparedness Month, the Eastern Massachusetts ARES staff is working to tighten our preparedness across the section. Some examples include:

-Frank O’Laughlin, WQ1O, has been doing the Emergency Communications Workshop weekly for the Falmouth ARES team.

-Jim Palmer, KB1KQW, North Shore ARES EC, has started a discussion topic on backup net controls and liaisons on the North Shore ARES email list.

Early last week, I heard from Joe Heck-K1LBG, who is the Red Cross Communications Officer. He mentioned to me that the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Organizationl Chart was out of date. That was updated and fixed last week. Understanding that was the case, it was time to go through the entire web site and update and clean up old/outdated information and other items on the web site. The site should now be very up to date with some fresh content. Those updates include the following:

1.) Eastern Massachusetts ARES Staff organizational Chart is now updated.

2.) The Comprehensive Frequency Listing is updated with PL Tones for the Region 1 and 2 RACES Repeaters. The RACES manual and frequency listing is currently under revision but the information there reflects the last good information given on RACES frequencies.

3.) The Comprehensive Frequency Listing now directs you to a link for the latest SKYWARN frequency information.

4.) The Ema ARES Membership Policy was updated to direct new and existing ARES applicants to the Join Us link while retaining the old Word Document Application.

5.) The Field Day link was updated for the events that occurred in 2006.

6.) The IRLP/EchoLink section was updated to reflect how they are utilized for Emergency Communications.

7.) Updated the Voice Nets section to reflect the correct timeframe for the Monthly Eastern Mass. ARES Net.

8.) Updated the Workshops section to accurately reflect how we are running our workshops.

9.) The Interoperability link’s formatting was tough to read and has been cleaned up and fixed.

10.) The Massachusetts Statewide Hurricane Hope Drill After Action Report has been uploaded to the web site.

11.) We have added a section on past information and PR from the May 14th, 2006 Floods from the ARRL, the ARES web site and from the North Shore Radio Association (NSRA).

12.) Updated the calendar to include various weekly nets and the Eastern Massachusetts Monthly ARES Net. Removed the scheduled events link from the right side of the web site.

These are all the updates have been made to the web site to improve preparedness and readiness within the Eastern Massachusetts ARES/ARRL section.

Department of Homeland Security Declares September National Preparedness Month

Hello to all….

The Department of Homeland Security has declared the month of September, National Preparedness Month in the United States. For us, as Amateur Radio Operators particularly those involved with ARES/RACES/SKYWARN/MARS/SATERN/Red Cross and other organizations, National Preparedness Month should strike a strong tone within our ranks. For us, we should be prepared at home for when natural or man-made disasters arise and have the necessary supplies at home so that we can survive for at least 3 days and in some cases as long as 7-10 days. We also need to be prepared for the potential of deployment for Emergency Management and NGO’s that we have worked with over the past several years. The press release on DHS National Preparedness Month and other associated information on preparedness can be seen from the following link:

http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/interapp/press_release/press_release_0988.xml

The ARRL, as an organization working with DHS on raising the awareness of preparedness, is one of many organizations involved with National Preparedness Month. The ARRL has declared Amateur Radio Awareness Day for Saturday September 16th, 2006. Below is a link to an ARRL article on DHS National Preparedness Month and ARRL Amateur Radio Awareness Day:

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2006/09/01/1/?nc=1

As your Eastern Massachusetts ARES Section Emergency Coordinator and ARES SKYWARN Coordinator for NWS Taunton, September is a very appropriate month for National Preparedness Month. While the extremely active severe weather season has waned, we are entering the peak of the Hurricane Season and while the season has not been as active as expected, there remains a threat from the Tropics in the Eastern Massachusetts section until early October, when cooler waters should then protect the region from serious impact from a land-falling hurricane.

Several items have been completed this week to increase our section’s preparedness and the details will be posted in separate announcements via the various email lists and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES web site.

Thank you for your continued support of Eastern Massachusetts ARES!

Boston ARC To Help At WGBH Ice Cream FunFest

Ice Cream FunFest logoBob Salow, WA1IDA writes on BARC-List:

Ice Ham — Ice Radio — Ice Cream!!

The WGBH Ice Cream FunFest will be held on Saturday, 16 September 2006. For many years the Boston Amateur Radio Club has responded to their request for communications to assist and protect the 10000 expected visitors at the WGBH (Public TV and FM) annual Ice Cream FunFest. It is held outside their studios on Western Avenue in Brighton.

To those who have participated in the past, I can assure you that your service received their greatest praise. To you and any newcomers, your help is needed even more this year to assist with crowd and parking management and emergency needs. Our operation begins at 0900 and should be over before 1400.

The area is compact enough to use 2-meter hand-helds on simplex. Helpful is an antenna better than the rubber duck that came with your radio, as well as battery capacity to last the day.

Not only is this a visible ham public service, but we (and all their visitors) get to sample the wares of the FOURTEEN ice cream providers (the most ever) FREE. Eat all you can, but don’t get sick on your radio!

WGBH gives us some extra thanks by allowing us booth space to promote and demonstrate ham radio to the visitors of all ages. Every year this proves to be a great opportunity to introduce ham radio to the public. We plan to demonstrate Morse code to kids of all ages. In the past we have even stirred some dormant ham visitors back into operation. You can be of help here, too.

Time is short and your help is needed. For those who have not done much ham public service, this is an excellent opportunity to get familiar without much effort. Please contact me as quickly as possible. More details to follow. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Tour de Westford, Lowell Youth Soccer Fall Freeze Need Ham Help

Police Amateur RAdio Team of Westford logo“Bo” Budinger, WA1QYM writes on PART-L:

[The Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford] is primarily a public service organization. We have had a good history of helping out with communications for many different organizations over the years. There are two upcoming events that I would like to bring your attention to. They both require a fair number of hams to participate. All that is required is a 2 meter walkie (and maybe a spare battery or two). Please let the contact people know if you are willing to participate!

Thanks,

TOUR DE WESTFORD BICYCLE RIDE

This year’s [Tour de Westford Bicycle Ride] will be held on October 8, which is the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend. Dave (WI1R) is in charge. The format of the ride will be the same as last year, and the course will pretty much be the same of last year’s course. The 30 mile ride will start at 10:00 AM and the 12 mile ride will start at 1:00 PM or 1:30 PM. If you’re available and want to help with this year’s ride, please send Dave (WI1R) a reply letting him know if you want to work the 30 mile ride, the 12 mile ride, or both.

LOWELL YOUTH SOCCER’S FALL FREEZE TOURNAMENT

The Lowell Youth Soccer Association will be having their Annual Fall Freeze Tournament on November 11 and 12. This is their major fundraiser. Proceeds from this fundraiser allow them to provide scholarships and equipment to the less fortunate youth of our city and surrounding cities/towns. It also allows them to provide a safe, pleasurable, soccer environment for over 1000 current soccer players in our league.

During this Fall Freeze Tournament they will need communications help in the Parking areas, as well as shadowing of other volunteers on the field.

They normally have over 100 teams competing from not only Lowell and the surrounding area but teams traveling from surrounding states such as Maine, Connecticut, and Rhode Island to name a few. Between the players, spectators, and coaches, this provides a turn out of thousands. We will need many people for this event and for both days! Contact: Ron (KB1KRG) at: RQUATTROCHI@phlyins.com.

“Wiley Fox” On The Loose in Dartmouth

Fox pictureTed Wright, N1OHV reports that a hidden transmitter has been deployed in the Dartmouth vicinity, and it’s waiting for hunters to find it.

“That wiley, cunning little fox is loose again,” Wright writes on the SEMARA-Members mailing list. “He managed to grab a battery and get loose from my basement. OOPS!”

N1OHV says the fox is hiding in an old ammo can chained to a tree somewhere in Dartmouth. The hidden transmitter identifies every 10 minutes on 145.600 MHz. It can be heard from Routes 6 and 195.

Wright has a number of suggestions for new and experienced fox hunters alike. “Wrap a cardboard tube with aluminum foil so you can stick your handheld in it for attenuation, dust off that old handy finder, that old portable yagi, that old adcock, that squeaky Doppler unit, that near-field receiver, that… well, you get the idea.”

PART of Westford To Provide Comms For “Blues N’ Brews” 8/26/06

PART of Westford logoThe Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford is recruiting hams to participate in the Blues N’ Brews Festival on Saturday, August 26, 2006 from 10:15 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

“They are only looking for a couple more people,” writes PART’s Terry Stader, KA8SCP. “You will need to fill out an application at: http://www.bluesnbrews.com/pdf/bnb_volunteer_app.pdf
and fax it to Bill Barnett at 978-692-1191 no later than Thursday night.”

Stader adds that the communications will be on FRS frequencies “but the PART folks are being asked to provide comms to WPD if necessary since cell phone coverage there is very spotty.” According to KA8SCP there is a fire department detail working the event as well.

Interested persons can contact KA8SCP with any questions.

Thank you ARRL!

The club is located on 54 Donald St. in South Dartmouth, MA For directions, visit http://tinyurl.com/ghgzg. Additional talk-in help will be available on 147.000/+600/PL67.

The start time is also informal… come anytime Sunday morning. We expect to have the club and restroom facilities open by 8AM and we’ll hold the raffle at noon. At this time I can’t vouch for the availability of refreshments, but there are several drive thrus on the way in or very near by. More news on that as the date nears.
We continue to be grateful if you promote the event at your local meetings, nets, web sites and newletters. Our club is over 300 strong and we openly welcome visitors at any time. Our regular club meetings are the first Thursday of the month at 7PM. We also hold a variety of daily and weekly nets that you can find schedules for on our web site at http://www.semara.org. Please mark your calendars now.

Attention SEMARA members: I still need a few bodies to help with parking and cleanup. There is not much to do during te event except buy and sell, but your help even for just a few minutes would be highly valued. We also need a few people to rotate the talk-in duties on 147.000. Please contact me for arrangements.

We would also appreciate that if you have items to discard that you make arrangements to take these items back with you. We will not be able to accomodate disposals of heavy iron, monitors or any type of hardware. The trash receptacles on the premise are for household rubbish. We appreciate your help in managing this.
