KM1CC FN51 Grid Square Operation, Jan. 18-19, 2018

Coast Guard Beach, Eastham, MA The Marconi Cape Cod Radio Club station, KM1CC will be activated from rare grid square FN51 on Cape Cod National Seashore on Jan. 18-19, 2018.

K1RV reports that he, N1NS, N1DC, N1VH and K1WCC along with others will be QRV on all of the HF bands using CW and SSB. Logs will be uploaded to Logbook Of The World. The operation will coincide with ARRL’s 2018 International Grid Square Chase.

KM1CC’s temporary location for the operation will be the Coast Guard Building on Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. Coast Guard Beach is often cited by “Dr. Beach” as one of the ten best beaches in the the USA. The station was built in 1936 for the US Coast Guard. It was used for shipwreck rescues- small boats were launched from the beach until helicopter rescues became the norm. The building’s ownership was transferred from the US Coast Guard to the National Park Service in the early 1950’s. It served as the first headquarters for Cape Cod National Seashore. It is now used as an education center.

–Thanks, “Pi” K1RV

Amateur Radio – MARS interoperability exercise (November 4-6)

Elements of the US Department of Defense (DOD) will conduct a “communications interoperability” training exercise November 4-6, once again simulating a “very bad day” scenario. Amateur Radio and MARS organizations will take part.

“This exercise will begin with a national massive coronal mass ejection event which will impact the national power grid as well as all forms of traditional communication, including landline telephone, cellphone, satellite, and Internet connectivity,” Army MARS Program Manager Paul English, WD8DBY, explained in an announcement.

During the exercise, a designated DOD Headquarters entity will request county-by-county status reports for the 3,143 US counties and county equivalents, to gain situational awareness and to determine the extent of impact of the scenario. Army and Air Force MARS organizations will work in conjunction with the Amateur Radio community, primarily on the 60-meter interoperability channels as well as on HF NVIS frequencies and local VHF and UHF, non-Internet linked Amateur Radio repeaters.

Again, this year, a military station on the east coast and the Fort Huachuca, Arizona, HF station will conduct a high-power broadcast on 60-meter channel 1 (5330.5 kHz) on Saturday from 0300 to 0315 UTC. New this year will be an informational broadcast on Sunday, on 13,483.5 kHz USB from 1600 to 1615 UTC. Amateur Radio operators should monitor these broadcasts for more information about the exercise and how they can participate in this communications exercise, English said.

“We want to continue building on the outstanding cooperative working relationship with the ARRL and the Amateur Radio community,” English said. “We want to expand the use of the 60-meter interop channels between the military and amateur community for emergency communications, and we hope the Amateur Radio community will give us some good feedback on the use of both the 5-MHz interop and the new 13-MHz broadcast channels as a means of information dissemination during a very bad day scenario. (Thanks Tom, N1CPE)

ARISS Contact From Fenway Park A Huge Success

The Red Sox 2017 STEM Day at Fenway Park in Boston, MA drew over 2,500 students from schools in every New England state, including schools in low-income areas. Some students traveled a day early to ensure they’d be there on time.  The Red Sox had been sending various STEM education materials to all schools.

A tweet from the Italian Space Agency / ISS crew member and amateur radio operator Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA: “One astronaut and 2000 future ones! Had fun talking with you all!”  Fenway Park also tweeted, resulting in 26.5K tweets, 305 following, and 514 followers. Dan Barstow from CASIS was at Fenway and moderated the ARISS radio contact.

Noted Media Historian to Speak at North Shore RA, Sept. 18, 2017

North Shore RA logoNSRA General Meeting on September 18th, 2017
NOTE: Third week this month
Doors open at 7pm, meeting starts at 7:30pm
Link to Meeting Location

Speaker:
Media Historian, Professor, & Former broadcaster
Dr. Donna Halper

Speaking on:
How the Amateurs Created Commercial Radio… and what happened after that

Today, people can listen to radio in a number of ways– online, in the car, at home, even on their smartphone. But there was a time in the early 1920s when radio was new, and there was only one way to listen– in your “radio room.” In those early years, one group of people helped to keep your favorite stations on the air– ham radio operators.

Join media historian, professor, and former broadcaster Donna Halper on September 18th, as she brings along her rare radio memorabilia and takes you back in time. She will introduce you to some pioneering hams who kept a foot in both amateur and commercial radio (without them, there would have been no stations like WBZ or WEEI or the first station in Massachusetts– 1XE/WGI).

Dr. Halper will also share some interesting facts about the history of Boston radio, including why radio today isn’t as good as what many of us remember from when we were growing up. And she will tell you about some performers and announcers who came from the North Shore.

“Snow Goose” Special Event Operation, So. Weymouth, August 20, 2017

image of W1NAS QSL cardW1OD writes:

W1NAS had another successful Special Event Station yesterday. Due to the Museum being smack in the center of a major site reconstruction program at the former Naval Air Station, we were fortunate enough to be operating from the K1USN Radio Club in nearby Braintree, MA. We made more than 75 contacts on CW and phone, despite the horrible band conditions. We actually made more phone contacts than CW for a change! Visiting board members from the Shea Naval Aviation Museum stopped by and enjoyed the event and took many pictures.

This was the 59th anniversary of the flight of the blimp Snow Goose from NAS South Weymouth to Resolute Bay, as indicated above. Next year will be the 60th anniversary and we’re already thinking about what we’ll do and how we’ll do it. We’re hoping all the site work will be completed around the Museum and that we’ll be back open to the public once again.  For those wishing a high-quality QSL for yesterday’s event, please send a SASE to Steve, W1OD.

Many thanks to all those who assisted in yesterday’s SES: K1RV, Pi; N1VH, Marty, W1VP, Larry; KA1KIJ, Bob; W1TPB, Ted; WK1D, Jeff; K1WN, Bill; N1DC, Rick; WA1TPC, Bob; and a few others whose names I forget at the moment.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: AMATEUR RADIO PARITY ACT (ARPA)

August 8, 2017

Dear ARRL Member: Based on feedback I’ve received, it seems to me that some members still don’t fully understand certain features of the Amateur Radio Parity Act (ARPA) and what it is meant to do. To make things clearer, we have developed an FAQ in the format of questions and answers. Please take a few minutes and read the FAQ to learn more about the ARPA.

Here is the direct link: http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Regulatory/The%20Amateur%20Radio%20Parity%20Act%20FAQ.pdf

Here is another link with additional information: http://www.arrl.org/amateur-radio-parity-act

Thanks to those of you who have written your Senators in support of the ARPA. If you have not done so, please do so by clicking on the link below. It only takes a minute.

https://arrl.rallycongress.net/ctas/urge-us-senate-to-support-amateur-radio-parity-act

Thanks. Let’s keep the effort moving!
