Ice Ham — Ice Radio — Ice Cream!!
The WGBH Ice Cream FunFest will be held on Saturday, 16 September 2006. For many years the Boston Amateur Radio Club has responded to their request for communications to assist and protect the 10000 expected visitors at the WGBH (Public TV and FM) annual Ice Cream FunFest. It is held outside their studios on Western Avenue in Brighton.
To those who have participated in the past, I can assure you that your service received their greatest praise. To you and any newcomers, your help is needed even more this year to assist with crowd and parking management and emergency needs. Our operation begins at 0900 and should be over before 1400.
The area is compact enough to use 2-meter hand-helds on simplex. Helpful is an antenna better than the rubber duck that came with your radio, as well as battery capacity to last the day.
Not only is this a visible ham public service, but we (and all their visitors) get to sample the wares of the FOURTEEN ice cream providers (the most ever) FREE. Eat all you can, but don’t get sick on your radio!
WGBH gives us some extra thanks by allowing us booth space to promote and demonstrate ham radio to the visitors of all ages. Every year this proves to be a great opportunity to introduce ham radio to the public. We plan to demonstrate Morse code to kids of all ages. In the past we have even stirred some dormant ham visitors back into operation. You can be of help here, too.
Time is short and your help is needed. For those who have not done much ham public service, this is an excellent opportunity to get familiar without much effort. Please contact me as quickly as possible. More details to follow. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford
TOUR DE WESTFORD BICYCLE RIDE
This year’s [Tour de Westford Bicycle Ride] will be held on October 8, which is the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend. Dave (WI1R) is in charge. The format of the ride will be the same as last year, and the course will pretty much be the same of last year’s course. The 30 mile ride will start at 10:00 AM and the 12 mile ride will start at 1:00 PM or 1:30 PM. If you’re available and want to help with this year’s ride, please send Dave (WI1R) a reply letting him know if you want to work the 30 mile ride, the 12 mile ride, or both.

LOWELL YOUTH SOCCER’S FALL FREEZE TOURNAMENT
The Lowell Youth Soccer Association will be having their Annual Fall Freeze Tournament on November 11 and 12. This is their major fundraiser. Proceeds from this fundraiser allow them to provide scholarships and equipment to the less fortunate youth of our city and surrounding cities/towns. It also allows them to provide a safe, pleasurable, soccer environment for over 1000 current soccer players in our league.
During this Fall Freeze Tournament they will need communications help in the Parking areas, as well as shadowing of other volunteers on the field.
They normally have over 100 teams competing from not only Lowell and the surrounding area but teams traveling from surrounding states such as Maine, Connecticut, and Rhode Island to name a few. Ted Wright, N1OHV reports that a hidden transmitter has been deployed in the Dartmouth vicinity, and it’s waiting for hunters to find it.
“That wiley, cunning little fox is loose again,” Wright writes on the SEMARA-Members mailing list. “He managed to grab a battery and get loose from my basement. OOPS!”
N1OHV says the fox is hiding in an old ammo can chained to a tree somewhere in Dartmouth. The hidden transmitter identifies every 10 minutes on 145.600 MHz. It can be heard from Routes 6 and 195.
Wright has a number of suggestions for new and experienced fox hunters alike. “Wrap a cardboard tube with aluminum foil so you can stick your handheld in it for attenuation, dust off that old handy finder, that old portable yagi, that old adcock, that squeaky Doppler unit, that near-field receiver, that… well, you get the idea.”
The Police Amateur Radio Team of Westford is recruiting hams to participate in the Blues N’ Brews Festival on Saturday, August 26, 2006 from 10:15 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
“They are only looking for a couple more people,” writes PART’s Terry Stader, KA8SCP. “You will need to fill out an application at: http://www.bluesnbrews.com/pdf/bnb_volunteer_app.pdf
and fax it to Bill Barnett at 978-692-1191 no later than Thursday night.”
Stader adds that the communications will be on FRS frequencies “but the PART folks are being asked to provide comms to WPD if necessary since cell phone coverage there is very spotty.” According to KA8SCP there is a fire department detail working the event as well.

N1DT and K1VV plan to activate Gurnet (USA 609) and Duxbury Pier (Bug) Light (USA 251) under the call W1AA for the International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend on August 19, 2006 from 7:00 AM EDT (1100 UTC) until about 5:00 PM EDT (2100 UTC).
International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend is held annually to promote public awareness of ham radio and lighthouses; to contribute to the recognition that lighthouses, lightships, and their keepers deserve.
Whitey, K1VV notes that he and N1DT will begin operations on 75 meters, above 3980 kHz. “Check 3996.” On 40 phone, look for W1AA between the nets, most likely below 7270, down to 7225. Whitey says they’ll also use 20 phone later in the morning above 14310, or 17 meters above 18150. “We will return to 40 phone about 1530 to 1600 UTC, about noon local time.”
Morse code operation will be conducted roughly on the half hour, on 7035, 10116, 14035 and 18080 kHz, plus or minus QRM.
“We will be posting our spots on the DX Summit. but we would appreciate any and all W1AA spots by the members.” He adds, “DX QSLs are via the W1 Bureau and stateside are via W1AA please with an SASE. A photo of the lighthouse will be furnished.”

Members of the Whitman Amateur Radio Club are gearing up for the annual Marshfield Fair with a special event station and Amateur Radio exhibit booth August 18-27. Bill Hayden, N1FRE is coordinating the event. He has secured passes for all volunteers who have signed up thus far. According to Hayden, most of the four-hour shifts have been filled, but he is still soliciting volunteers to staff the event.
As in years past, hams will explain Amateur Radio to the public and introduce youngsters to Morse code. Last year, the crew made approximately 150 contacts with 31 states, 15 foreign countries, and two Canadian provinces.

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for August is rapidly approaching.
The monthly ARES Net for August is Monday August 7th, 2006, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening.
Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net.
We will have several interesting announcements for the net that evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via email and on the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Web Site at http://ares.ema.arrl.org
