Braintree EMA Field Day Press Release

Town of Braintree sealBraintree, MA –- Thousands of Ham Radio operators will be showing off their emergency capabilities this weekend. Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies world-wide. During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio – often called “Ham radio” – was often the ONLY way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer “hams” traveled south to save lives and property. When trouble is brewing, ham radio people are often the first to provide critical information and communications. On the weekend of June 24-25, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with these ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about. Showing the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and even historical Morse code, hams from across the USA will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

This annual event, called “Field Day” is the climax of the week long “Amateur Radio Week” sponsored by the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and back yards around the country. Their slogan, “Ham radio works when other systems don’t! ” is more than just words to the hams as they prove they can send messages in many forms without the use of phone systems, internet or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis. More than 30,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year’s event.

“We hope that people will come and see for themselves, this is not your grandfather’s radio anymore,” said Allen Pitts of the ARRL. “The communications networks that ham radio people can quickly create have saved many lives in the past months when other systems failed or were overloaded.”

At Braintree Sunset Lake, the Braintree Emergency Management Agency will be demonstrating Amateur Radio at BEMA Annex @ Sunset Lake on June 24th and 25th. They invite the public to come and see ham radio’s capabilities and learn how to get their own FCC radio license before the next disaster strikes.

There are 660,000 Amateur Radio operators in the US, and more than 2.5 million around the world. Through the ARRL, ham volunteers provide emergency communications for the DHS Citizens’ Corps, Red Cross, Salvation Army, FEMA and thousands of state and local agencies, all for free.

To learn more about Amateur Radio, go to http://www.hello-radio.org. The public is most cordially invited to come, meet and talk with the hams. See what modern Amateur Radio can do. They can even help you get on the air!

CAARA Considers Forming Emergency Communications Team

CAARA logoThe Cape Ann Amateur Radio Association‘s board of directors is exploring the formation of an active emergency communications team, according to CAARA member Curtis Wright, AA3JE.

“We are all hams, and hams have a proud and honorable tradition of rising to assist in times of trouble,” writes AA3JE. “But in the modern era it takes more than good intentions to be useful and effective.”

Wright says that CAARA needs to be prepared in advance “to fit into the already existing ARES and RACES structures, needs to have its emergency materials and procedures in place and ready to go, and to have identified individuals who are trained, ready and willing to help.”

Wright encourages any interested CAARA member to contact him by phone or at Cwright@IDDS.com, or to contact any CAARA officer.

“If we are ready, we can be of use, but if we wait until the emergency develops, we will not. This is a real chance to do something that matters.”

ARRL New England Division Cabinet Meeting 7/16/06

New England ARRL division logo
To: New England Division Section Managers, Assistant Directors, Advisory Committee members and Affiliated Club Presidents

Subject: New England Division Cabinet Meeting – Sunday, July 16, 2006

I’d like to invite you to the summer ARRL New England Division Cabinet meeting on Sunday, July 16, 2006, in Portland Maine – right off I-95 about 45 miles north of the NH/ME border. We’ve never had a cabinet meeting in Maine – and sure appreciate those who have traveled a long ways to previous cabinet meetings!

We usually have 30+ people attending from clubs across New England – this will be an opportunity for you to provide direct input to the ARRL on policy issues. The meeting will run from 9:00am until 4:30pm, with coffee/snacks at 8:30am and a break for lunch at noon – and as in the past we’re asking for your contribution of $15 to help cover some of the cost for breaks and for lunch, and for parking.

There is an ARRL Board meeting scheduled for July 21-22 – this will give us a chance to talk about issues you think the Board should be considering. What would you like to see on the agenda for the meeting?
The meeting will be at the Holiday Inn Portland West Hotel (207-774-5601) at 61 Riverside Street in Portland ME. This is a very busy time of year in the Portland area, so if you need a room, book it early. (The current on-line price for a room is pretty expensive at about $135.)

A map and directions can be found at http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hd/pwmwe but it’s very easy to find. From the north or south, take exit 48 from the Maine Turnpike/I-95, at the lights turn left and the hotel is on your left.

Please let me know by July 10th (earlier is better!) if you will be coming so we can plan for a big enough room and enough food. Vice Director Mike Raisbeck, K1TWF, and I are looking forward to seeing you there!

Very 73!
— Tom (+Mike)

Norwood ARC Improves Repeater Coverage

Norwood ARC logoThe Norwood Amateur Radio Club reports improved sound quality and coverage on its 147.21 repeater, according to NARC president Barry Devine, K1BFD.

“N1UEC and I installed two Motorola Radius GM300 radios to replace the venerable but aging radio that up until recently had performed admirably.” According to Devine, a 100-watt amplifier was taken offline for the time being while the new radios are tested. So far, it appears that the system hears better than the old system according to tests from various locations between Norwood and Foxboro.

On a related note, the club recently received permission from the son of Silent Key and honored member Louis Schall, W1JLI, to obtain the W1JLI call sign for their repeater. The technical committee even plans to use Schall’s voice for the repeater ID on the repeater controller.

Winn Brook School HAMsters Entertain Special Ham Visitors

Winn Brook HAMsters visit 06/02/06, photo #1Winn Brook HAMsters visit 06/02/06, photo #2

The Winn Brook school HAMsters of Belmont received two special visitors on June 2–Phil Temples, K9HI and Dr. Ariel Cohen, K9ERA. The first-graders, taught by Donna LaRoche, KB1LWY, were treated to stories by Temples and Cohen about their ham radio experiences and their respective careers. Cohen spoke of her first contact by Morse code with another woman in Alaska, and her public service work during a hurricane in North Carolina. Temples described how Amateur Radio can be used by people with disabilities to communicate with others even when they may be unable to see, hear or speak. The children, in turn, treated the husband-and-wife team to a “Collection Day” show-and-tell of special objects and memorabilia.

This marks the third year the Watertown couple have visited Donna La Roche’s first grade class. Other recent ham visitors have included Dr. Chuck Counselman, W1HIS, and Bill McIninch, KA1MOM. The class is affiliated with the ARRL’s Education and Technology Program, a.k.a. “The Big Project.”
