Algonquin Amateur Radio Club assists with EDS Drill

November 17th was an ordinary day to most residents of Marlboro. For the senior citizens it was the annual flu clinic. For members of the Algonquin Amateur Radio Club, Marlboro Emergency Management Agency, and other town officials, it was a day to test out the ability for the city to open and run an Emergency Dispensing Site. This year’s Flu Clinic was unlike any before. It was run as a EDS complete with buses to transport people to the EDS site. AARC members rode buses and managed traffic flow, and assisted where needed.

The drill went very well and much information was obtained to fine tune it for next year, which at this time is to be run as a EDS site again.

TACG To Conduct Two-Meter Simplex Net

The Taunton Area Communications Group will convene a two-meter simplex net on Wednesday evenings beginning on November 28, 2007 at 0100 UTC (8:00 p.m. EST) on 146.430 MHz.

According to TACG’s Greg Glynn, W1VFB, it will be directed net with a net control station. Adds Glynn, “This is a first time venture for the Group… I think we will do very well with it. As time goes on it should prove that there is two-meter communications beyond repeaters.”

Plimoth Plantation Special Event, 11/24-11/25/07

Plimoth Plantation special event operation summary 2005Jeff Lehmann, N1ZZN writes:

The annual Whitman Amateur Radio Club special event at Plimoth Plantation is coming up fast. We will be operating from approximately 10 AM until 3 PM on Saturday November 24th and Sunday November 25th. We will be using the club WA1NPO call sign, and operating on the HF bands, as well as 2 meters, mostly monitoring the club 147.225 (PL 67.0) repeater. Ray, KB1ODU will also have a computer set up for echolink. We may also use the echolink over the air on the 147.18 Bridgewater repeater. We would especially like to invite our many new members to come down and get a chance to operate on the HF bands.

All club members and area hams are welcome to stop by and operate, or just observe while we are there. For those who may not have been there in the past, just mention to the people at the door that you are there for the Whitman amateur radio event, and you will be allowed in for no charge. We will have a table set up for anyone who would like to send a NTS radio gram to a non ham friend or family member. This provides practice for sending messages in times of emergency.

The antenna crew will be gathering at 10 AM on Friday November 23 to set up antennas for each operating position. Please remember to bring a hand held radio, set to 147.225 simplex so we’re able to communicate on the grounds.

More information can be found at the club website: http://www.wa1npo.org.

Zola Center Founder Receives Cash Award to Promote Ham Radio

A Brighton woman has been awarded funding to operate a program promoting ham radio communication for women with disabilities.

Donna Suskawicz, who founded the Irving Zola Center for Persons with Disabilities, was selected the winner in the nationwide Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund. Suskawicz says that the award money will allow her to “assist with training, purchasing equipment and sending at least one woman to the summer Courage Center Handiham camp.” Suskawicz adds that she looks forward to working on the project with the Boston Amateur Radio Club in the coming year.

“I am thrilled to be nationally recognized and will continue to work to empower persons with disabilities,” writes Suskawicz, who competed against 1300 applicants for the $5000 cash prize. She adds, “One person CAN make a difference!”

The Irving K. Zola Center for Persons with Disabilities at Brigham House is a drop-in community center for persons with disabilities. The center is named for Irving Kenneth Zola, a resident of Newton, MA, who was an internationally known sociologist and advocate who specialized in disability studies and medical sociology.

Billerica ARS Organizing Kit Construction Project

Billerica ARS logoBillerica Amateur Radio Society member Erik Kramer, KB1MIC is spearheading a kit construction project for his fellow club members. Kramer has suggested the “Firefly” QRP kit, described in the September, 2007 issue of QST. According to Kramer, the kit costs approximately $60 and takes about 11 hours to assemble. It is “software-based” and “requires a PC.”

According to the club’s meeting minutes, 13 attendees at the last meeting indicated they were interested in participating in a kit project. As a group, the club discussed whether there might be more suitable kits for “first-timers.” Ideas included an SWR/field strength meter, and a power supply for the shack.

Kramer has requested members contact him with additional suggestions for kits.

Nashoba Valley ARC Assists With Townsend Anniversary Parade

Nashoba Valley ARC assists with Townsend Anniversary Parade '07Members of the Nashoba Valley Amateur Radio Club were on hand to assist in the Townsend 275th Anniversary Parade on September 23, 2007. Approximately 250 divisions marched in the parade.

“It was obvious from the activity in the center of Townsend that there were going to be a lot of people,” writes Stan, Pozerski, Jr., KD1LE.

The group set up a Net Control position by 9:30 a.m. at the Spaulding School. NCS utilized an “Ez-Up” shelter provided by N1QIT, tables and chairs from KD1LE, and radios and antennas from the Pepperell and Groton Emergency Management Agencies. Arrangements were made to use the 146.315 Fitchburg repeater in addition to two-meters simplex.

Operators were stationed at four parade staging areas, the start and finish, the Town Common, and two parking areas from which participants and spectators were bused. Also assisting in the operation were members of the Worcester RACES group (WECT).

Participants included: KB1LRL, K1JHC, KT1I, KB1OZL, KK1X, KB1ESR, AB1CV, W1HFN, N2YHK, Penny, KB1OJH, KD1LE, KD1SM, K1YTS and N1CKM.

Framingham ARA “Toys For Tots” Drive

Framingham ARA logoThe Framingham Amateur Radio Association is again hosting a “Toys for Tots” toy drive this year. Members are rquested to bring any toy–new and unwrapped–to the next meeting on December 6.

“You don’t have to spend a lot of money to brighten some child’s holiday season. It’s the thought that counts,” writes FARA President Gordy Bello, K1GB. He adds that members can drop off toys at the club shack on any Saturday morning in lieu of next month’s meeting.

“We’ve had an unbelievable response the last several years, and I know we can do it again.”

PAVE PAWS Report from Pacificon Forum

PAVE PAWS installationThe eHam.net web site is carrying a report and accompanying comments from the Pacificon Forum on the latest developments in the PAVE PAWS situation. Although it focuses primarily on the impact to west coast UHF repeater systems the summary states, “The USAF has either written letters to East Coaster or had the FCC do so to notify the hams they must comply. We now know on the east coast they have until November 15 to comply.”

Boston Logan Airport/Eastern Mass. ARES SET Details for Saturday 10/27 at 10 AM

Hello to all….

The following is detailed information on the Boston Logan Airport Drill serving as the Eastern Massachusetts ARES Simulated Emergency Test or SET.

Date and Timeframe of Exercise

Saturday October 27th, 2007
Start Time 10 AM
End Time: 12:30 PM
Duration: 2.5 Hours
-Please allow time for setup/take down of any equipment during this exercise.

Purpose

Eastern Massachusetts ARES will participate in the Boston Logan Airport Drill which will serve as the Simulated Emergency Test or SET for 2007. The primary support agency for this SET will be the American Red Cross. The Red Cross will be providing Mass Care operations on site at Logan Airport and will be activating 4 of its 5 field offices starting at 1030 AM and ending around Noon time. Those field offices include Cambridge, Waltham, Peabody, and Brockton and a communications test will be done between all of the field offices utilizing 47.42 MHz, 2 Meter and 440 Simplex along with local area repeaters. Eastern Massachusetts ARES has been requested to supply 1-2 Amateurs per field office except for the Peabody office where 2-3 Amateurs have been requested. Please do NOT self-deploy. If you’re interested in the deployment please contact your ARES EC or DEC for your area.

Concept of Operations

The concept of operations for this exercise will be to have Amateurs start on HF and their local SKYWARN and RACES repeater. From there, we will shift to simplex operations and then shift to the MMRA Repeater Network to round out the exercise. For the call-up via HF and on their local SKYWARN or RACES frequency, we will be looking to gather information on if this was an actual incident, what you’re availability would be to support the operation and in what capacity (i.e.: deployment to the airport, deployment to a Red Cross field office, net control, home station support etc.). No deployments other than the Red Cross field office deployments mentioned in the purpose section will be done but gathering the info on who is available for deployment will simulate real action. For the call-up on Simplex, we will gather any deployment information not already received by stations and also request signal reports on the Red Cross field offices for use by the Red Cross to determine if communications can be sustained over simplex either directly or through the use of relays.

Below is a rough schedule of repeaters and simplex frequencies to be tested:

1000-1030 AM: HF 3943 KHz and local area repeaters.
1030-1100 AM: 147.420 Simplex
1100-1130 AM: 446.000 Simplex
1130-Noon: MMRA Repeater Network

Notes:

*–The 145.23-Boston Repeater, 3943 KHz HF and the New England Reflector network (EchoLink Conference Node: 9123 *NEW-ENG*/ IRLP 9123) will be monitored during this entire timeframe as control points for folks who cannot reach simplex or the repeater networks. This is particularly important for Amateurs in the Boston area who may only have HT’s or EchoLink capability due to antenna limitations/restrictions. The town of Bridgewater EOC will serve as the net control center and control point for these operations.

*–ARES DEC’s and EC’s will utilize their local SKYWARN and/or RACES repeaters as control points for those that cannot make contact via simplex. Check with your local DEC or EC for this information.

*–The Eastern Massachusetts ARES SEC will be located at the net control center at the town of Bridgewater EOC.

*–For the call-ups on Simplex, the Net Control Center at the Bridgewater EOC will act as the first center for call-up and the Red Cross in Cambridge will act as the second call-up. For the 1030 AM timeframe, the call-up will start with the town of Bridgewater EOC calling for general stations and then calling for the Red Cross field offices. This is because the Red Cross field offices will first test their capability on 47.42 MHz first starting at 1030 AM and then move to 147.42 Simplex when their 47.42 MHz test is completed. For the 11 AM Simplex test on 440 MHz, the Red Cross field offices will be called first to see if they can all be heard and can communicate with one another.

-The primary HF Net frequency for this exercise will be 3943 KHz with 7245 KHz serving as backup.

-We ask all participating stations to try all 5 frequencies even if they feel they cannot reach a specific repeater or don’t have reasonable simplex coverage. It will be a good way to determine the range of your station and holes in coverage when using this specific set of repeaters or Simplex. Use HF, VoIP and Digital modes as control points.

If you are participating and cannot or do not feel you can hit any of the slated repeaters, simplex or control points on HF, VoIP or digital modes, please contact your local ARES EC/DEC or SEC so we can assist you in some way to participate in this exercise.

The following are links to information on the Packet/Winlink system in the region that have frequency and usage information for those that would like to send message traffic during the exercise:

Winlink Information: http://ares.ema.arrl.org/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=3119&page_id=92

Packet Information:
http://www.powersrvcs.org/EMaPacket/PAKETMAP.HTM

There are additional local frequencies that maybe utilized in this drill at your local town/city level or at a regional level as another means to follow where the net goes for stations who may not hit the selected repeaters. Please contact your ARES DEC or EC for further information on additional frequencies that maybe utilized in your specific area during the drill.

This document could be updated again on Thursday October 25th, 2007 or Friday October 26th, 2007 after a conference call with the Red Cross if any changes are needed.
