Operation Atlas-Boston Logan Airport Drill Rescheduled for 6/4/05

Hello to all….

….Eastern Massachusetts ARES Assistance Requested by the Massachusetts Bay Red Cross for the Operation Atlas Boston Logan Airport Drill….
….Drill Rescheduled for Saturday June 4th, 2005 with the same timeline to be utilized. A backup date of Sunday June 5th, 2005 has already been defined as well….

The Operation Atlas, Boston Logan Airport Drill, has been rescheduled for Saturday June 4th with the same timeline to be utilized by Massachusets By Red Cross. A backup date of Sunday June 5th has also been designed in case of weather issues on Saturday June 4th. The Red Cross has defined their timeline and we had 10-20 Amateurs assigned for this exercise for the orignial date, however, given the new rescheduled date of June 4th, we may need different Amateurs to step forward in case the ones previously assigned cannot make the new data. In particular, we are looking for Hams in the Metro Boston area to provide additional support for the drill.

The Massachusetts Bay Red Cross Chapter has requested Eastern Massachusetts ARES to assist in the Operation Atlas-Boston Logan Airport Drill. This drill is being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security and the Red Cross has a role in the drill to provide a Disaster Mental Health Services Team, Mass. Care Team, and will have their Boston and Waltham offices active for this exercise. The Red Cross has requested communications assistance from Eastern Massachusetts ARES for this drill.

Currently, we are anticipating a need for approximately 15-20 Amateurs. The town of Bridgewater EOC will be setup as a Net Control center similar to what was done for the Democratic National Convention. Amateurs will be needed at the Waltham and Boston Red Cross chapters and several Amateurs will be needed on “Go” teams that will be going into the city or to the airport itself. Home stations will also be needed for this exercise.

This is the first major drill that we have participated in with Red Cross since the Democratic National Convention. While not as large as the TOPOFF exercise just completed in Connecticut, the Department of Homeland Security is running the Operation Atlas-Logan Airport Drill and all eyes will be on the performance of Amateur Radio during this drill. It is widely known through several federal government agencies of the tremendous effort that the ARES/RACES/SKYWARN and MARS operators played during the Democratic National Convention and this is an opportunity to prove that the high level of organization that existed last year has been sustained since the DNC by a strong performance in this exercise.

Please contact your DEC or myself if you’re interested in participating in this exercise. Please note that deployments to the Red Cross and as go teams for the Red Cross will have requirements set forth by our ARES staff. For Net Control duties in Bridgewater, please contact Carl Aveni-N1FY at caave@peoplepc.com or myself.

This is a worthwhile event to practice deployment skills not utilized since the Democratic National Convention. Also, remember that in this drill, much like a real emergency communications situation, unexpected things may happen so remember one of the most important aspects to supporting a drill or real emergency communications situation, Blessed are the flexible for they will not get bent out of shape.

This announcement will be updated again as further information becomes available.

Eastern MA ARES Members Assist At TOPOFF 3

TOPOFF 3 Exercise w/ K1EIC & W1MPNAmateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) volunteers in Connecticut in this week’s massive TOPOFF 3 exercise drew high praise from the American Red Cross, as reported on the ARRL Web’s on-line article, High Praise for Amateur Radio Follows ARES’ TOPOFF 3 Performance. Augmenting the Connecticut ARES volunteers were several ARES members from Eastern MA, including Section Manager Mike Neilsen, W1MPN.

Harvard Wireless Club Participates in Merit Badge U Activities

HWC shieldHarvard Wireless Club (HWC) members participated in the Boston Minuteman Council’s “Merit Badge University” on April 9, 2005. The program serves Scouts in the greater Boston area. According to the Boston Minuteman Council’s web site, “Scouts can earn up to three merit badges in such diverse areas as American Cultures, Journalism, and Radio. Dracut Ham Sought For RACES Liaison

RACES logoTerry Stader, KA8SCP writes:

I have been speaking to the Emergency Management Director in Dracut over the last several months and they are interested in establishing an Amateur Radio liason for communications. There is a major drill coming up in September and we would like to get a team of hams in place to support this exercise.

If you are a Dracut ham or can pass this message on to one, please have them contact me directly so we can connect up the interested parties.

Thanks.

Wireless & Steam Museum Joint Club Visit Planned

New England Wiress & Steam Museum logoThe Framingham Amateur Radio Association has announced that plans are underway for a joint trip with the Boston Amateur Radio Club to visit the New England Wireless and Steam Museum in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

“We are tentatively looking at either Saturday, June 4 or 11,” writes FARA’s Vice President Gordy Bello, K1GB. “After the visit we may stop for a bite at a reasonably-priced restaurant.”

According to the museum’s web site, the wireless building “shows the span of electric communication from telegraph to TV. It features keys, sounders, crystal sets, tubes, microphones, ocean cable instruments, spark transmitters, detectors, an 1881 Dolbear receiver, an 1899 Marconi coherer, and a jigger and spark set exactly like the one used on to call for help on the Titanic in 1912.”

Additional information about the New England Wireless & Steam Museum can be found at its web site, http://users.ids.net/~newsm/.

Bello asks individuals who are interested in the trip to please contact him if they have a preference for the date.

MARS Exercise—Request ARES/NTS Support

There will be a MARS Exercise on Saturday April 9th, 2005. This exercise is being held for MARS stations to practice gathering tactical and formal message traffic and have that traffic turned into “EEI’s” or Essential Elements of Information.

On Saturday April 9th, Liaison frequencies that will be utilized for the MARS Emergency Exercise will be 7243 during the Day, 3943 in the evening along with nets on the 146.97-Paxton Repeater at 10 AM, 2 PM, and 6 PM. This information was given through a NTS RACES Traffic Message written by Bob Mims, Region II RACES Radio Officer and Southern New England Army MARS Coordinator.

This is an opportunity for Eastern Massachusetts ARES and NTS to continue its partnership and cooperation with MARS. Recently, the ARRL has expanded its partnership with MARS and we are continuing what the national organization would like to see completed across the country. Please support the exercise and bring some tactical and formal traffic that MARS can transfer into EEI’s for their exercise.Respectfully Submitted,

A reminder that the monthly ARES Net for February is rapidly approaching. The monthly ARES Net for April is Monday April 3rd, 2005, at 8:30 PM on the MMRA Repeater system. This is after the RACES Nets earlier in the evening.

Make the first Monday of the month, “Emergency Communications Night” and check into your local RACES Net and then check into the ARES Net on the MMRA
Repeater System. We look forward to your participation and remember, we are always looking for Net Controls to run the ARES Net. Thanks to all for your
continued participation!

We will have several interesting announcements for the net this evening and we look forward to everyone’s participation. Updates will be posted via
