Announcing the New Slow Way to Go!

K1USN’s New Weekly Slow Speed Test

Inaugural session Monday, Sept 14, 2020 @  0000 UTC, (Sunday, Sept 13 @ 8:00 PM EDT)

The CWops Club (CWops) promotes the art of CW for those who wish to expand and improve their on-the-air experiences. CWops’ CW Academy (CWA) program has produced thousands of successful graduates who have gone on to become everyday CW operators. Hundreds of CWA grads have become CWops members after demonstrating their ability to understand and communicate in CW at speeds of 25 WPM and higher!

CWops’ three weekly 25 to 40+ WPM CWT sprints are exciting, stimulating and a great way to improve CW copying ability, operating skills, and propagation knowledge. The CWTs create bonds of friendship among CW-loving operators around the world.

Now, for those just getting started in CW contesting and others who prefer a more leisurely pace, several members of both the K1USN Radio Club and CWops are starting a weekly one-hour slow speed CW contest, the SST. Please join us!

K1USN’s new Slow Speed Test is designed to encourage and assist those who signed up for CWA to learn CW or to improve their CW skills but are not yet copying 25 WPM, as well as all others who feel like “taking it slow and easy” once per week both for their own pleasure and to help others out.

CWops currently offers a total of nine “slow speed” CWT’s per year just after the three CWA graduations where all are asked to slow down to 20 WPM. Many CWA grads make contacts in those sessions, enjoying a well-earned rush of accomplishment. The SST will expand those opportunities for success to 52 weeks per year!

All of us old enough to remember our Novice days recall the rush of adrenalin and the sweaty grip on our J-38 (or Radio Shack) keys during those very first CW QSOs. This is what it must feel like for the new CW operators we want to encourage.

The weekly slow speed SST is also for operators who currently participate in regular CWT sessions, but only as S & P (Search and Pounce) entrants. The weekly 20 WPM or slower SSTs can build their confidence to find open frequencies and begin calling CQ, first in the SSTs and then in the more crowded and frenetic full speed CWTs. Successfully crossing that CQing threshold is another real accomplishment!

We hope many SST participants become sufficiently comfortable with CW contesting to enjoy the regular higher speed CWT sessions, other big CW contests, and smaller local and regional QSO parties, using N1MM+ (or other) computer loggers, spotting networks, call history files, live online scoring, etc. We welcome everybody to join in the SSTs whether high speed CW contesting is your goal or not, including new ops making their first attempts at completing a CW QSO.

In addition to SST’s 20 WPM upper speed limit, we ask all to be patient, supportive, and willing to slow down further as necessary to assist another op in completing an SST QSO.

CWA recommends using electronic keyers and paddles, but if you are more comfortable with some other device, please feel free to join us in the SSTs using a straight key, cootie key, bug or paddles. Unlike high speed contests, where QSO rate is king and a CQing/“running” station expects only the required exchange and confirms a contact with simply “dit” or “R”, the SST encourages sending brief friendly greetings to the other Op.

Friendliness is part of taking it slow and easy! So please join us in the SSTs! All you need is an HF radio, an antenna, and the desire to become, and assist others to become, better CW operators!

Time and Day:  0000 UTC Monday (Sunday 8 PM EDT)

Suggested initial SST frequencies:

  • 80 meters 3.532 – 3.539
  • 40 meters 7.032 – 7.039

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR MARCH 2018

Attached here is the section traffic report for both East and West Mass. It is good to know that the nets are not dependent on any one person and function very well such as when your STM was off the air. As many of you know my station has had its problems for the past few months and I have had to replace various pieces of equipment. Many improvements including a new antenna are now in place thanks to Greg KC1CIC (and the N1OTC bow and arrow), to whom I am greatly indebted. I am now back and hopefully with an almost entirely new station I will be in business for another couple years or more.
I would also like to mention an article now posted on our section website written by our own KC1CIC regarding his experience during a recent New England nor’easter and all his emergency preparations prior to the storm. Good reading and good advice. Look for it at https://ema.arrl.org/2018/04/13/gaining-experience-and-confidence-through-a-storm/.   Thanks to all for your support of the nets.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JANUARY 2018

The big news of the day is our new section website which Phil K9HI has spent many hours getting ready for us.  Many thanks to Phil and to Tom K1TW, our section manager for his inspiration in bringing this project to fruition.  It is bringing all the section activities together in one place and I hope you will find it interesting, helpful and easy to use.  Any suggestions on topics for the NTS page can be addressed to kw1u@arrl.net. This is your page for training and news in the world of message handling.

To those in the West Mass section (and that includes the folks in central Mass) we welcome a new Section Manager, Ray Lajoie KB1LRL. Ray has been active on the CM2M Net.

New amateurs are becoming involved in the traffic nets and they are most welcome. Congrats to Peter KC1HHO on his new ORS (Official Relay Station) appointment.

Below is the traffic report for East and West Mass sections with thanks to Greg KC1CIC for it’s compilation. You all are great. Keep up the good work.

SEMARA Debuts New Station

photo of newly renovated SEMARA club shack, Feb. 13, 2018After months of work, Southeastern MA Amateur Radio Association members are putting the finishing touches on their new station at the clubhouse at 54 Donald Street in Dartmouth.

According to SEMARA member Don Rosinha, WA1BXY, the shack now features a Kenwood TS-570 and an Elecraft, as well as new computers and accessories.

A radio room showing and tutorial event for club members scheduled for last month was postponed by winter weather conditions. It will occur in the near future.

Congratulations to SEMARA for constructing an elegant and functional station for its members.

PART of Westford Kit Building Session, March 10, 2018

PART of Westford logoPART of Westford is holding a kit building session on Saturday, March 10, 2018, according to PART club president Andy Stewart, KB1OIQ.

“The club has chosen the Cricket80A QRP CW transceiver for the 80 meter band,” Stewart says. “I’m looking for a building chairman, two to three Elmers to help and encourage kit builders, a technical person to spend a few minutes explaining the circuit theory, and people who want to build the kit!”

Interested parties should contact KB1OIQ at kb1oiq@arrl.net.

More information about the Cricket80A kit can be found at http://4sqrp.com/cricket.php.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2017

I hope everyone is enjoying a good start to the new year despite the cold and low number of sun spots.  December turned out to be a good month traffic-wise. It seemed holiday messages increased over the past few years and that was nice to see.   This station continues to have issues with 80 meters and therefore not able to make evening HF nets but efforts continue to find a solution.  Thanks to all who are covering.  We in Eastern Mass are seeing some new folks checking into our local nets and handling traffic.  This is always most welcome and we especially welcome Peter KC1HHO, John W1JWM and Paul KC1HHK.  Just remember making mistakes is not a bad thing.  It is how we all learn.  Fellow traffic handlers are glad to help.  So jump in, learn and get experience.  If it is ever called for you will be ready, and you can have fun in the process making friends. See you on the nets.

CW Training Net, 146.97 MHz Paxton Repeater

Greg Algieri, WA1JXR writes:

The Central Massachusetts Amateur Radio Association (CMARA) will be conducting a “Learn CW Training Net” on the club repeater, W1BIM on 146.97 PL 114.8 on Monday nights at 7:30 PM starting January 15. Greg, WA1JXR will be the net control station and CW instructor. The purpose of the net is to teach hams new and old how to send and receive CW. The net will be a combination of FM voice as well as modulated CW (MCW) transmissions over the repeater.

CMARA members as a club project have built an MCW interface for their 2M FM radios which will allow them to send CW. If others are interested in obtaining a MCW Interface Kit they can contact Greg, WA1JXR at wa1jxr@comcast.net and I will start an interested list. If we get a minimum of 10 kit orders I will do a bulk buy of parts and circuit board and assemble more kits. So check it off on your calendar and check into the “Learn CW Training Net” on Monday nights and learn and have fun with the original digital mode, CW.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2017

Holiday greetings to all. It has been a busy time on the nets in December.  There has been a lot of activity and the nets and the digital network have been bustling.  It has been fun to see all the activity, and I wish to thank each one of you for your participation and support. I hope the new year brings good things and good times to all.

Just an FYI to those CW folks.  The MARI CW net has an alternate frequency on 160 meters of 1810 Khz.  Conditions on 80 meters have often made communication within the section impossible.  Net Control stations have been advised to begin calling on 3565 Khz, but if not hearing or copying anyone there to move to 1810 Khz.  Five of our regulars have 160 meter capability and others are encouraged to try this band if feasible.

Below is the November traffic report, with the usual many thanks to KC1CIC for it’s compilation.  Good job all.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2017

Hard to believe Thanksgiving is almost here.  After a rather summer-like fall we are finally seeing some wintry weather but the holidays have stealthily crept up on us.  It would sure be nice to see some holiday greeting radiograms on our traffic nets.  I hope folks will consider this unique way of letting families and friends know you are thinking of them.

It is always nice to see newcomers handling messages on the nets and we welcome Peter KC1HHO to those ranks of traffic handlers.  Peter is in Quincy and I’m sure he would like to see some messages coming his way.

Propagation on HF has hit a winter low again.  Our section nets have seen some difficult times at net time.  The CW net which normally meets on 3565 Khz at 7PM has occasionally moved to 1810 Khz on the 160 meter band.  We are fortunate to have several folks with capability on that band and we have had success in moving traffic there.  Keep tuned to 3565 however as we will always start there then move as necessary.

Below is the traffic report for October.  Thanks to all participants for your support.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2017

Greetings all,

Below is the September traffic report for the combined sections of East and West Mass.  While participation and traffic numbers have been down, hopefully with cooler weather and holidays coming up we will see an increase.

I was invited and gave a presentation on message handling to the members of the PART Club in Westford in September. Members had little to no knowledge about traffic nets and message handling in general and the information was well received.  I would like to encourage your clubs to also learn about the very vital skills of accurate and efficient message handling and net operation.  If your club would like more information let me know.

Also in September I attended a very successful convention at Boxboro.  We held a Meet and Greet session for traffic handlers which was well attended by active traffic handlers from all over New England, and a good discussion on the status of nets and message handling was held.  Of course it is also good to see in person the folks we talk with regularly on the nets.

Traditional holidays are coming up so consider surprising a friend or relative with a unique holiday greeting via radiogram.  They may even learn a little something about amateur radio.

73 and thanks for your support.
Marcia KW1U STM
