MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR APRIL 2018

Below is the April traffic report for the combined sections of East and West Mass.  As always we are indebted to Greg KC1CIC for compiling these reports.  Thanks also to all those who submitted their reports.  Our sections are doing very well. Anyone is welcome to submit a Station Activity Report (SAR) and/or a Public Service Honor Roll report (PSHR) but remember to be counted on the Honor Roll you must have attained 70 points or higher.  Information is on the website ema.arrl.org/national-traffic-system.  Note that points are given for various aspects of public service, not just traffic related functions.

It is good to see more folks handling traffic and some are even reaching out to become net control stations.  Some are also learning how to handle messages using packet and pactor.  Speaking of messaging using digital modes, save the weekend of September 8 and 9 (weekend after Labor Day).  Greg and I will be giving a presentation on messaging using Packet and Pactor and the Winlink software for both NTS and Emcomm.  The schedule is not yet available but stay tuned.

I am fortunate this spring to be able to attend Dayton Hamvention, one might call the “Mecca” of ham conventions.  This year the emphasis is on public service.  It should be interesting.  If anyone has a chance to attend I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Happy spring to all and see you on the nets.

73, Marcia KW1U

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR MARCH 2018

Attached here is the section traffic report for both East and West Mass. It is good to know that the nets are not dependent on any one person and function very well such as when your STM was off the air. As many of you know my station has had its problems for the past few months and I have had to replace various pieces of equipment. Many improvements including a new antenna are now in place thanks to Greg KC1CIC (and the N1OTC bow and arrow), to whom I am greatly indebted. I am now back and hopefully with an almost entirely new station I will be in business for another couple years or more.
I would also like to mention an article now posted on our section website written by our own KC1CIC regarding his experience during a recent New England nor’easter and all his emergency preparations prior to the storm. Good reading and good advice. Look for it at https://ema.arrl.org/2018/04/13/gaining-experience-and-confidence-through-a-storm/.   Thanks to all for your support of the nets.

KW1U Antenna Restored

KC1CIC bow and arrow launches G5RV at KW1U's QTHRecent storms in New England took a toll on antennas at the QTH of our Section Traffic Manager Marcia Forde, KW1U.  Last Saturday, Greg Bennett, KC1CIC replaced Marcia’s ailing Alpha Delta antenna with a new G5RV.  However, only days later the high winds took it down.

But April 7, 2018 was “antenna raising day.” Greg used Jack’s (N1OTC) bow and arrow and got the antenna up over a tree branch at least 60 feet up.  Now KW1U is back on the air!

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2018

As I look out at the rapidly falling snow during this third nor’easter in the past two weeks, I’m happy to report my antenna is still in the air although I can’t say the same for some of the other tree limbs now in my yard. For those who have had power outages and downed antennas, I heard spring may actually arrive in the next few weeks.
Thanks to all of you, the nets continue to operate and the traffic continues to flow in spite of our March New England weather. You all are great! Below is the traffic report for East and West Mass for February. Good job and thanks for all your support.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JANUARY 2018

The big news of the day is our new section website which Phil K9HI has spent many hours getting ready for us.  Many thanks to Phil and to Tom K1TW, our section manager for his inspiration in bringing this project to fruition.  It is bringing all the section activities together in one place and I hope you will find it interesting, helpful and easy to use.  Any suggestions on topics for the NTS page can be addressed to kw1u@arrl.net. This is your page for training and news in the world of message handling.

To those in the West Mass section (and that includes the folks in central Mass) we welcome a new Section Manager, Ray Lajoie KB1LRL. Ray has been active on the CM2M Net.

New amateurs are becoming involved in the traffic nets and they are most welcome. Congrats to Peter KC1HHO on his new ORS (Official Relay Station) appointment.

Below is the traffic report for East and West Mass sections with thanks to Greg KC1CIC for it’s compilation. You all are great. Keep up the good work.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC SUMMARY FOR 2017

Massachusetts traffic handlers were busy at work in 2017. These dedicated folks regularly check into traffic nets and handle message traffic, not only as a fun aspect of the hobby where friends are made, but for learning and practicing the skills of handling record message traffic and net operation. These folks have shown to be a valuable asset in the event of a disaster situation. Those interested in emergency communications are welcome and encouraged to learn from these traffic nets. Below is a summary of the activity of these message handlers in 2017.  Note 14,986 check-ins handling 3,733 messages over the 12 months. The digital traffic total reflects the fact that KW1U operates a regional 24/7 scanning hub on HF pactor as well for messages going nationwide and to European amateurs. This report was compiled by and with thanks to Greg KC1CIC ASTM

Simply send an email to peter@k1pjs.com with “I would like to attend” in the subject line.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2017

I hope everyone is enjoying a good start to the new year despite the cold and low number of sun spots.  December turned out to be a good month traffic-wise. It seemed holiday messages increased over the past few years and that was nice to see.   This station continues to have issues with 80 meters and therefore not able to make evening HF nets but efforts continue to find a solution.  Thanks to all who are covering.  We in Eastern Mass are seeing some new folks checking into our local nets and handling traffic.  This is always most welcome and we especially welcome Peter KC1HHO, John W1JWM and Paul KC1HHK.  Just remember making mistakes is not a bad thing.  It is how we all learn.  Fellow traffic handlers are glad to help.  So jump in, learn and get experience.  If it is ever called for you will be ready, and you can have fun in the process making friends. See you on the nets.
73, Marcia KW1U

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2017

Holiday greetings to all. It has been a busy time on the nets in December.  There has been a lot of activity and the nets and the digital network have been bustling.  It has been fun to see all the activity, and I wish to thank each one of you for your participation and support. I hope the new year brings good things and good times to all.

Just an FYI to those CW folks.  The MARI CW net has an alternate frequency on 160 meters of 1810 Khz.  Conditions on 80 meters have often made communication within the section impossible.  Net Control stations have been advised to begin calling on 3565 Khz, but if not hearing or copying anyone there to move to 1810 Khz.  Five of our regulars have 160 meter capability and others are encouraged to try this band if feasible.

Below is the November traffic report, with the usual many thanks to KC1CIC for it’s compilation.  Good job all.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2017

Hard to believe Thanksgiving is almost here.  After a rather summer-like fall we are finally seeing some wintry weather but the holidays have stealthily crept up on us.  It would sure be nice to see some holiday greeting radiograms on our traffic nets.  I hope folks will consider this unique way of letting families and friends know you are thinking of them.

It is always nice to see newcomers handling messages on the nets and we welcome Peter KC1HHO to those ranks of traffic handlers.  Peter is in Quincy and I’m sure he would like to see some messages coming his way.

Propagation on HF has hit a winter low again.  Our section nets have seen some difficult times at net time.  The CW net which normally meets on 3565 Khz at 7PM has occasionally moved to 1810 Khz on the 160 meter band.  We are fortunate to have several folks with capability on that band and we have had success in moving traffic there.  Keep tuned to 3565 however as we will always start there then move as necessary.

Below is the traffic report for October.  Thanks to all participants for your support.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 2017

Greetings all,

Below is the September traffic report for the combined sections of East and West Mass.  While participation and traffic numbers have been down, hopefully with cooler weather and holidays coming up we will see an increase.

I was invited and gave a presentation on message handling to the members of the PART Club in Westford in September. Members had little to no knowledge about traffic nets and message handling in general and the information was well received.  I would like to encourage your clubs to also learn about the very vital skills of accurate and efficient message handling and net operation.  If your club would like more information let me know.

Also in September I attended a very successful convention at Boxboro.  We held a Meet and Greet session for traffic handlers which was well attended by active traffic handlers from all over New England, and a good discussion on the status of nets and message handling was held.  Of course it is also good to see in person the folks we talk with regularly on the nets.

Traditional holidays are coming up so consider surprising a friend or relative with a unique holiday greeting via radiogram.  They may even learn a little something about amateur radio.

73 and thanks for your support.
Marcia KW1U STM

WELFARE INQUIRIES INTO PUERTO RICO

I have had requests to send welfare inquiries into Puerto Rico and have been sending these NTS messages via pactor to Florida where under normal conditions there has been regular contact with Puerto Rico for the relaying of messages.  Because of the extreme devastation however I was informed by a Florida operator that the following information provided by the Weather Channel is being used to inquire about status of residents of PR.  I suggest folks try either that or the Red Cross Safe and Well site, URL listed below. While we will try to get information via NTS, please understand that it may not be possible under the circumstances.

MASSACHUSETTS TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JUNE 2017

I hope everyone had a successful and enjoyable Field Day.  I enjoyed visiting the Whitman Club in East Bridgewater and the Boston Club in Hingham. Between nets and my MBO we saw a fair number of NTS messages.  I hope your club was able to participate in this aspect of FD and get the extra points.  We hope to expand on this next year with more instruction on how to go about it.

Traffic was down in June as well as the number of check-ins and perhaps this was due to vacations and other outdoor activities.  However a good job was done by all and we thank those who helped for their support.

The traffic handlers picnic will be held Sunday August 6 in Concord at 44 Raymond Road from Noon to 4PM.  Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided.  Bring your beverage of choice and if you wish, anything you might want to share.  If you have any folding chairs for outdoors you might throw those in the car as well as I have a limited number of them here.  Most can find my QTH with GPS, but if you need directions contact me at kw1u@comcast.net.  If you plan to attend or are considering attending I would appreciate hearing from you so I can anticipate amount of hamburgers and hot dogs to provide.  All traffic handlers and would-be traffic handlers are invited whether from Massachusetts or not.  Hope to see you there.

Below is the June traffic report with thanks to Greg KC1CIC.
