57th annual JOTA logoDouglas Sharafanowich, WA1SFH writes:

Good Morning! The annual BSA Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) 2014 is happening over the weekend of 10/18/14.

A JOTA On Steroids
Unlike other JOTA events where Amateur Radio is typically an unscheduled activity that is left to fend for itself while other scheduled activities are being run, we have specifically incorporated JOTA 2014 related activities into our Fall Camporee entitled: “Disaster in East Scoutopia”.

QTH: (10 min from Sturbridge, MA)
Camp Pomperaug (AKA: East Scoutopia), Union , CT (I-84 East, Exit 74).

Did I mention that we are expecting 200 Boy Scouts? 😉

ARDF / Foxhunting
As one of the 4 Amateur Radio scheduled Activities (Mast Building, Inverted “V” Antenna Building and GOTA stations), we have included an Activity called: “Search & Rescue (SAR) – Find the Lost Patrol”. In this case, the “Lost Patrol” will be one of 4 hidden transmitters placed around the Camp property enabling us to run 4 short Fox Hunting courses throughout the day.

HELP WANTED *
We need help in conducting and equipping this 1 Day Activity.
– Specifically: 2 instructors, 2 HTs & Antennas, and 4 Hidden Transmitters (144 or 440).

If you would like to be part of this ARDF/ Foxhunting Team, and can help with instruction and/or equipment, please contact me ASAP.
– We are about 10 days away from this event.

THANK YOU !

* PS – Also need a few additional HF operators for the day.

Hams needed for Ashland Half Marathon

Once again the Ashland Half Marathon needs amateur radio to help with logistics, SAG, and safety. Hams with all levels of experience in public service are encouraged to volunteer.

Ashland, the original starting site of the Boston Marathon, holds several running events every year. In the spring and fall of 2013 and again this year, Amateur Radio played a critical role – providing non-medical transport for tired runners; reuniting separated family members; keeping the organizers appraised of the race progress; providing communications for the on-site medical teams. The event organizers are counting on amateur radio to assist in a safe and fun event.

The race will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2014 with a starting time of 10:30AM. Generally, this is a quick event, with a conclusion around 1:30PM.

Volunteer now and become part of a great team. Contact:

Thousands of Hams gather at Deerfield New Hampshire Fairgrounds

Near-Fest Web for tickets, camping, exhibitors http://near-fest.com

The next time you use a smart phone remember; radio hams have been sending messages to each other for over a hundred years. Much of the technology used by the social network was invented by Radio Amateurs; the founders of the world’s first social network, nearly a century before anyone ever heard of the Internet. Many hams build their own equipment and antennas and operate “off the grid” using alternate power sources and no Internet.

Known as the “Woodstock of Amateur Radio”, the NEAR-Fest draws thousands of “Hams” and their families from all over the U.S., Canada, even Europe. At Deerfield Fairgrounds they renew old acquaintances, and dig through rare decades-old radio parts along with the newest gear.

NEAR-Fest, a private not-for-profit corporation donates funds to good causes. Says founder and chairman Mike Crestohl W1RC, “we are committed to funding projects that will introduce the magic and wonder of radio to young people with the hope that this will ‘light the spark’ for some of them as it did for us”.

This year NEAR-Fest is funding college scholarships for electronic studies, but we are also matching New England Ham Radio Clubs in raising funds for the ARRL Spectrum Defense Fund. The fund is used to represent and protect the interests of Radio Amateurs in the U.S. and abroad. NEAR-Fest will match up to $1000 every year. We also supported the international WRTC competition, held in New England this summer.

World wide there are over 3 million people using Amateur Radio, with a record number, over 750,000 and climbing, currently licensed in the United States. Hams come from all walks of life, from world leaders to taxi drivers, children, and retired folks. And they’ll all be there at NEAR-Fest this October!

TRAFFIC HANDLING AND TRAINING SYMPOSIUM

New Hampshire Section Manager Pete Stohrer K1PJS has given permission to post the following.  Note that the symposium is open to all, and I encourage Massachusetts hams to sign up.  I plan to be there along with N1OTC and we hope to see some of you folks there too, whether you are new to traffic handling, interested in trying a new mode (ie CW or digital), or looking for a refresher73, Marcia KW1U

Attention Traffic Handlers and interested Amateurs

A Traffic Handling and Training Symposium is scheduled in Concord (NH) for August 30th from 9A until 1p, the meeting location will be at Concord Bible Fellowship, 25 Rockingham St.

The meeting will discuss the basics of traffic handling, radiogram structure, CW and voice traffic net protocols, the National Traffic System (NTS) and the National Traffic System Digital (NTSD).

Traffic Handling is a skill all Amateurs should be familiar with. During emergencies you may be called to help pass messages when the regular communication infrastructure is down.

The ARRL had its formation around Traffic Handling and it is a skill as much needed today as then.

Lunch will be provided. The symposium is open to all. If you would like to attend send an email to peter@k1pjs.com

Good Food, Good Conversation: 2014 NTS Traffic Handlers Picnic

The rain held off, at least until 3 PM and the cloud cover kept the temperatures comfortable as a good group enjoyed good food and good conversation at the 2014 Traffic Handlers picnic at the Senior Center in Raynham MA Sunday August 3. The day was only dampened by the news that one of our most regular attendees was and will be greatly missed as we learned that Byron, K1YCQ became a Silent Key. A moment of silence was held in honor of Byron.

Those present included KW1U, N1OTC, N1TF, KB1WXC, W1HL, WA1LPM, N1LKJ, N1UMJ, N1IQI, N1WCO, K9HI, KA1OCF, KB1ZWZ plus a few harmonics. We were sorry to miss Dan, KC1AXR who arrived shortly after we had all left due to the arrival of raindrops. I want to especially thank Jim, N1LKJ for obtaining permission to use this fine facility, and Jack N1OTC who was again the master grill chef and did a superb job. Thanks also to all the others who brought all kinds of goodies. Jack was also the winner of the drawing for the new Amateur Radio Handbook, and Bob, N1SYC won the new Public Service Handbook, both donated by our Section Manager Phil, K9HI. Many thanks to Phil. Those of you who were unable to attend missed a good time. We hope to see you next year.
